Jubb's notho is a small, brilliantly coloured annual killifish from the seasonally arid coastal lowlands of eastern Kenya and southern Somalia, where it lives out its entire existence — hatching, maturing, spawning, and dying — within a single rainy season in ephemeral pools and swamps that vanish completely under the dry-season sun. The species' drought-resistant eggs, buried in soft dark mud at the pool's floor, endure months of desiccation in arrested development before the return of the rains triggers hatching and launches the next generation. Across its range in the lower Tana and Sabaki drainages of Kenya and the Juba drainage of Somalia, it faces mounting pressure from agricultural expansion, wetland conversion, and intensifying drought; the IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2018, though it notes the population trend is unknown.

Taxonomy & naming

Nothobranchius jubbi was described by Wildekamp and Berkenkamp in 1979. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) lists the valid name as Nothobranchius jubbi Wildekamp & Berkenkamp, 1979, placing it in the large African annual killifish genus Nothobranchius within the family Nothobranchiidae. The authority is presented without parentheses, indicating the original genus assignment has been retained.

The species is named in honour of R.H. Jubb, the South African ichthyologist whose extensive work on African freshwater fishes contributed foundational data to the study of the continent's killifish fauna. The genus name Nothobranchius is from the Greek nothos (false, spurious) and bragchion (gill), a somewhat obscure reference used historically to distinguish this group from related genera; it has no deep biological significance beyond serving as the established genus name for the East and southern African annual killifishes.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 2.5 in for Nothobranchius jubbi, which is typical of the genus — compact, deep-bodied fish shaped by a life history in which rapid maturation takes priority over size. As with virtually all Nothobranchius species, the sexes are strikingly different in colour. Males display the intense, often iridescent colouration that makes the genus popular with specialist hobbyists: scale-edge patterning in blues, reds, and greens, with a boldly marked caudal fin. Females are considerably plainer, dressed in drab brownish-grey tones that provide camouflage — a pattern consistent with females spending substantial time near or in the substrate during spawning.

The body form is robust relative to the fish's small size, with a slightly dorsoventrally flattened profile and a subterminal mouth suited to snapping small invertebrates at or near the water surface. The fins are rounded, and in males the unpaired fins carry the brilliant colouration and patterning that function in both mate attraction and male-male signalling.

Habitat

Nothobranchius jubbi inhabits ephemeral pools, swamps, and shallow depressions — described by the IUCN as rain pans and marshy areas with no permanent connection to river courses — in the seasonally arid coastal savannah of eastern Kenya and southern Somalia. Its confirmed native range covers the lower Tana and Sabaki river drainages in Kenya and the Juba river drainage in Somalia, with additional records from the Wabi Shebele basin in Ethiopia (FishBase). The IUCN places its extent of occurrence at approximately 185,556 mi².

These habitats are defined by their impermanence. During the rainy season the depressions fill with warm, often turbid water overlying the soft, dark grey or black clay-rich mud (vertisol-type soils) that is the critical substrate for egg deposition. Water temperatures recorded from across the range span 77–97 °F; pH ranges from 6.6 to 8.3; and conductivity measurements of 180–716 µS indicate moderately mineralised water, reflecting the variable chemistry of seasonal pools in a semi-arid landscape. As the dry season advances these pools contract and ultimately disappear, leaving the buried egg cohort as the only living presence of the species in the landscape until the next rains arrive.

Feeding

FishBase characterises Nothobranchius jubbi as an aggressive predator of aquatic invertebrates — the standard trophic mode across the annual Nothobranchius, which live fast and need high-calorie prey to complete growth and reproduction within a single season. The diet in the wild centres on aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and similar invertebrates found in the warm, organically rich waters of the ephemeral pools.

Congeneric species such as N. rachovii, which share broadly similar habitats, are described as micropredators that readily take Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworm under captive conditions — a feeding profile that applies equally well to N. jubbi in the aquarium. The species will also accept most live and frozen small invertebrate foods offered to it, and conditioning adults for spawning is straightforward with a varied, live-food-heavy diet.

Mating

Nothobranchius jubbi is a soil-spawning annual killifish: the pair spawn by diving together into or pressing close against the soft substrate, releasing eggs that are immediately buried or pressed into the mud. FishBase describes males displaying to and pair-spawning daily with a small number of eggs at a time throughout the brief adult phase, which is consistent with the iteroparous pattern seen across annual Nothobranchius — rather than a single mass-spawning event, adults spawn repeatedly in small batches across the adult season, maximising the number of egg cohorts deposited at different depths and times in the substrate.

Males are highly competitive and will display aggressively to one another. In the confined space of an aquarium, dominant males can harass both rivals and females relentlessly; multiple females per male and visual breaks in the aquascape help reduce this pressure. The spawning act itself is rapid and may occur multiple times per day when fish are in good condition.

Breeding

The defining feature of Nothobranchius jubbi's breeding biology is diapause: the fertilised eggs, encased in the dark, swelling vertisol clays of the pool substrate, enter a state of arrested development that allows them to survive the complete desiccation of their habitat for the duration of the dry season — potentially five to seven months. When the rains return and the pool refills, the eggs sense the environmental cues for development and hatch, producing fry that grow with remarkable speed. FishBase notes that juveniles reach sexual maturity within weeks of hatching, racing to complete their life cycle before the next dry season eliminates their habitat.

In the aquarium, the hobby replicates this cycle using peat fibre or coconut coir as a spawning medium. Adults are given 4–6 weeks on the spawning substrate, after which the peat (with its embedded eggs) is removed, lightly dried to remove surface moisture, sealed in a plastic bag, and stored at around 70–77 °F for a species-appropriate incubation period — for N. jubbi and related East African annual killies, storage periods of three to six months are typical before re-wetting triggers hatching. Fry hatch within 24–48 hours of the peat being flooded. First foods are nauplii of Artemia or similarly sized live prey; growth is fast and young adults are ready to spawn within a few weeks.

The full adult lifespan in the wild is well under a year; in the aquarium, where the pool does not dry, individuals may live 12–18 months but begin to senesce visibly well before that, consistent with the evolutionary programming of an annual organism.

In the aquarium

Nothobranchius jubbi is kept primarily by killifish specialists attracted to the genus's vivid male colouration and the engaging cycle of peat spawning and timed hatching. A pair or trio (one male, two females) can be housed in a tank as small as 10 US gal, but a dedicated species tank with a layer of soft, fine-grained dark substrate (coconut coir or peat-blended soil) or a separate spawning container inserted into the tank is needed for successful reproduction.

Water chemistry should broadly reflect the species' native conditions: temperature 75–79 °F (FishBase), with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. The IUCN data indicate the field range extends to pH 8.3, so the species is not sensitive to moderately hard or slightly alkaline water, though avoiding extremes is sensible. A gentle sponge filter maintains water quality without disrupting the substrate or creating strong currents. Males should not be combined without sufficient cover and multiple females, as intraspecific aggression is intense. The fish are short-lived and the most rewarding aspect of keeping them is cycling through generations, so maintaining multiple peat bags at staggered storage stages ensures a continual supply of fry.

The species is not widely available through the mainstream trade and is primarily exchanged through killifish societies and specialist breeders, typically as dried peat/coir containing eggs or as young adults.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment of December 2018 (published 2019, authored by Nagy and Watters) places Nothobranchius jubbi in the Least Concern category, citing an extent of occurrence of approximately 185,556 mi² across its native range in Kenya and Somalia, with the species recorded from more than 25 locations used as the basis for threat evaluation. However, the assessment explicitly notes that the population trend is unknown — a significant caveat given that the threats acting on the species are real and intensifying.

The IUCN identifies habitat degradation from agricultural expansion and urbanisation as the primary threats, alongside conversion of wetlands to seawater ponds for salt production and increasing drought frequency and severity — a direct threat to the ephemeral pools that constitute the species' entire habitat. There are no confirmed protected areas within the species' range, though the IUCN notes it likely occurs within national parks that overlap its extent of occurrence. The combination of a restricted, ephemeral-habitat specialist life history with rising anthropogenic pressure on the seasonal pools of eastern Kenya and Somalia means that the LC assessment should not be read as conferring long-term security. International hobbyist trade is noted by the IUCN as present but not commercially significant; captive killifish hobbyists maintaining the species in self-sustaining colonies therefore represent a genuine ex situ insurance population.
