Aphyosemion escherichi is a small, non-annual killifish from the coastal drainages of the lower Congo Basin and adjacent Mayombe forest zone, spanning Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Males carry striking red longitudinal banding against a yellowish-brown back; females are quieter in colour but equally elegant. A classic plant and mop spawner, the species has been kept and bred by specialists for decades, with current hobby populations traced to the Chiloangi drainage and the Tiaba River near Tshela in Congo-Brazzaville. It reaches around 2 in in males and is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, though like most forest killifish it depends on intact lowland rainforest stream systems that face ongoing pressure.

Aphyosemion escherichi was first described by Ernst Ahl in 1924. The parenthetical authority — (Ahl, 1924) — indicates that the species has been moved from the original genus in which Ahl placed it, which is standard for much of the historical Aphyosemion complex given the extensive taxonomic reshuffling the group has undergone over the past century. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination.

The species belongs to the large West and Central African genus Aphyosemion, which encompasses a diverse radiation of non-annual plant-spawning killifish across tropical Africa's forest and forest-margin drainages. The specific epithet escherichi is a patronym, honouring a person named Escherich — likely the German entomologist Karl Escherich, though the original description should be consulted for confirmation. Within the genus, Aphyosemion escherichi is placed in or near the Congo group of Aphyosemion, a cluster of species associated with the lower Congo drainage and coastal Mayombe forests of the Atlantic margin.

Historical hobby literature and collection records associate the species with the Kouilou drainage of Congo-Brazzaville, where the holotype was reportedly collected by J. Lambert in 1962 along the Pointe Noire–Sunda road. More recent hobby importations originate from the Chiloangi drainage and the Tiaba River near Tshela, demonstrating that the species has a broader distribution across the coastal forest systems of the lower Congo region.

Morphology

Aphyosemion escherichi is a slender, laterally compressed killifish. Males reach approximately 2 in total length; females are slightly smaller at around 2 in TL. Like most Aphyosemion, the male is markedly more colourful than the female, with the sexual dichromatism that makes the genus so prized by killifish hobbyists.

Males display a yellowish-brown dorsal ground colour that transitions on the flanks to a base marked by three distinct red longitudinal bands running from just behind the head to the caudal peduncle. Additional red pigment speckling and patterning overlies this banded arrangement, giving a rich, reticulate appearance in good condition. The unpaired fins (dorsal, caudal, and anal) typically carry colour extensions consistent with the genus: pointed or extended fin tips in mature males are common in Aphyosemion, though the degree of elaboration varies with population and individual condition.

Females are green-grey to olive in ground colour with reticulated red banding or flecking on the flanks — a much more subdued expression of the same pigment pattern seen in males. The body form is otherwise similar between sexes, though females become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid. The relatively modest maximum size and compact build make this a fish well suited to small specialist aquaria.

Habitat

Aphyosemion escherichi inhabits coastal swamps, small streams, and forest drainage channels in the Mayombe forest belt and the adjacent lowland rainforest zone of the lower Congo Basin. This region spans parts of Congo-Brazzaville, Gabon, the extreme northwest of Angola, and the far western Democratic Republic of Congo. The species is not seasonal in the strict killifish sense: it occupies permanent or near-permanent waters where the stream beds hold water year-round, unlike the temporary savanna pans inhabited by annual killifish that dry completely between seasons.

Water chemistry in these forest stream systems is characteristically soft and acidic. FishBase records a measured pH of approximately 6.25, while British Killifish Association husbandry notes cite pH 5.0 as typical of collection-locality conditions. Temperature at collection sites averages around 73 °F. The water is typically tannin-stained and low in dissolved minerals, filtered through leaf litter and forest soil — conditions similar to those of many other West and Central African Aphyosemion habitats. Hardness is low, recorded at approximately 10 dH or below.

Within the stream systems, Aphyosemion escherichi occupies shallow, often heavily vegetated or leaf-littered margins rather than open fast-flowing channels. This microhabitat preference — marginal vegetation, overhanging roots, floating debris — aligns with the plant-spawning reproductive mode, since eggs are deposited on fine-leaved plants, roots, and surface material rather than buried in substrate.

Feeding

Like virtually all Aphyosemion, Aphyosemion escherichi is a micropredator in the wild, targeting small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and other live prey items small enough to be seized whole. The forested stream habitats it occupies are productive environments for such invertebrate prey, supplied by the surrounding leaf litter and the overhanging canopy.

In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods readily. Small live foods such as Daphnia, mosquito larvae, Artemia nauplii, and micro-worm are all appropriate and maintain condition and colouration well. British Killifish Association notes indicate that fry readily accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and will also take dry foods — showing that the species is not excessively finicky compared with some forest killifish. Dry pelleted or flaked foods can form part of the diet once the fish are settled, but a regular component of live or frozen invertebrate food produces the best colour and breeding response.

Mating

Aphyosemion escherichi is a non-annual killifish with a plant and mop-spawning reproductive mode. Pairs do not engage in the intense, prolonged courtship displays seen in some annual species; the British Killifish Association notes that males are not particularly aggressive or active in courtship compared with some congeners. Despite this, spawning is reliably achieved following a period of separation and reunion of the pair — a technique commonly used by killifish breeders to re-stimulate spawning activity.

The spawning act itself involves the pair orienting side by side near the surface or in mid-water among fine-leaved plants, mops, or other suitable spawning substrate. Eggs are deposited singly or in small numbers on the substrate over an extended period — the pair spawning repeatedly across days or weeks rather than producing a single large clutch. Males display to females with spread fins and lateral posturing, but without the elaborate chasing behaviours of more energetic species. The adhesive eggs are deposited directly onto plant leaves, spawning mops, or upper substrate surfaces, and the parents typically take no further interest in them after laying.

Breeding

A typical spawn of Aphyosemion escherichi produces 30–50 eggs per breeding session, deposited across the upper portions of floating mops or fine-leaved plants. Because the eggs are adhesive and deposited individually, they can be removed by hand or by transferring mop sections to a separate hatching container — a standard technique for non-annual Aphyosemion. Eggs incubate in water with no requirement for a dry or peat-moss diapause period, consistent with the non-annual lifestyle. Incubation time at around 73 °F is in the range typical for the genus — approximately two to three weeks depending on temperature.

Once eggs are removed to a hatching vessel, they should be kept in shallow, slightly soft acidic water, checked regularly, and any fungused eggs removed to prevent spread. Hatching fry are small but accept newly hatched Artemia nauplii as a first food; finely crushed dry foods are also taken from an early age according to British Killifish Association records. Fry grow steadily and can be sorted by sex as colouration develops in males at several weeks of age. The species is comparatively straightforward to breed by killifish standards and has been maintained in the hobby for many decades through dedicated breeders following this mop-spawning protocol.

The long-term maintenance of healthy captive populations depends on periodic introduction of fresh genetic material from different lineage groups, as the hobby stock has been in culture for generations since the original Chiloangi and Tiaba River collections.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion escherichi is a specialist's fish rather than a general community species, best suited to a dedicated small killifish aquarium. A species tank or a setup shared with other small, peaceful fish of similar water requirements is ideal. Tank size need not be large — a 10–15 US gal aquarium is adequate for a pair or small group — but attention to water chemistry is important: soft, slightly acidic water at 72–75 °F, with the lower end of the pH range (5.0–6.5) best reflecting the species' natural conditions.

FishBase notes that the species can be difficult to maintain, a caution that likely refers to its sensitivity to hard or alkaline water and to deteriorating water quality rather than any particular feeding or behavioural challenge. Good filtration with minimal turbulence, regular partial water changes with soft slightly acidic replacement water, and a darkened tank with floating plants or surface cover all contribute to keeping the fish in full colour and breeding condition. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as killifish are accomplished jumpers.

For spawning, floating mops of dark or natural-coloured wool placed at the surface are the standard approach. Mops should be checked every few days and eggs removed to a hatching vessel. The fish are not aggressive toward each other by killifish standards, and a single male with one or two females in a well-planted tank with plenty of visual cover is a practical and aesthetically rewarding setup for hobbyists interested in this branch of the family.

Conservation

Aphyosemion escherichi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2009), reflecting its distribution across multiple drainages in the lower Congo coastal zone rather than confinement to a single locality. The species is known from Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, Angola, and the western DRC — a range broad enough to provide some buffer against localised habitat loss.

Nonetheless, the forest stream habitats that support this and related Aphyosemion are under sustained pressure across Central Africa. Deforestation for agriculture, logging, and charcoal production degrades the shaded, leaf-littered streams these fish require, increasing siltation, water temperature, and direct sun penetration in ways that disadvantage forest-specialist species. The broader Mayombe forest block — one of Central Africa's most biodiverse but underprotected forest fragments — is subject to ongoing clearing pressure. Introduced species, particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) deliberately released for mosquito control, have proven highly damaging to small killifish worldwide by competing for food and consuming eggs.

The species' persistence in the hobby represents a meaningful insurance population, with dedicated killifish societies maintaining captive lineages traced to known collection localities. This ex-situ reservoir has been important for other Aphyosemion species that have become difficult to collect or whose wild populations are poorly known, and represents a model for conservation-minded specialist fishkeeping.
