Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion louessense was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1931 on the basis of material from the Louessé River in the Bouenza and Niari river drainages of what is today the Republic of Congo. Because the name was erected under an earlier generic arrangement, the authority is presented in parentheses to indicate it has since been transferred. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises the valid combination as Aphyosemion louessense (Pellegrin, 1931).
The species belongs to Aphyosemion in the broad sense — a large West and Central African genus of non-annual and semi-annual killies within the family Nothobranchiidae. Aphyosemion as a whole is paraphyletic under molecular analyses, and various internal arrangements have been proposed, but louessense has not been placed in any segregate genus and the Catalog of Fishes retains it within Aphyosemion. It does not belong to a well-studied species group with a consensus name; the IUCN assessment and FishBase both treat it simply as Aphyosemion louessense without group assignment.
The IUCN Red List assessment (2009, published 2010) covers populations in the Kouilou, Louessé, Lefali, and Bouenza river systems in southern Congo-Brazzaville and the upper Nyanga drainage in southern Gabon, giving the species a Lower Guinea biogeographic signature consistent with other forest-stream endemics in this part of the Congo Basin periphery.
Morphology
Aphyosemion louessense is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of approximately 2 in in males (FishBase). As in most Aphyosemion, males are considerably more ornate than females: they carry extended, pointed, or lyrate fin tips and display vibrant colour patterns — typically combinations of red spots or streaks on a blue or green body ground — while females are plain brownish with rounded fins.
The overall body form is the archetypal elongate Aphyosemion shape: a slightly flattened dorsal surface, upturned mouth positioned for surface feeding, and a rounded to slightly lanceolate caudal fin that in males may develop extensions on the upper and lower lobes. Fin ray counts and detailed meristic data for this species have not been published in the sources available, and a full morphometric description beyond the maximum size would require reference to Pellegrin's original 1931 description.
Habitat
In the wild, Aphyosemion louessense occupies shallow, shaded brooks and small forest streams within the Lower Guinea rainforest belt of southern Congo-Brazzaville and adjacent Gabon. The IUCN assessment characterises its habitat as freshwater wetlands including both permanent rivers and streams and seasonal or intermittent watercourses, with individuals typically found in very shallow areas, presumably among leaf litter, submerged roots, and marginal vegetation. The species is benthopelagic and non-migratory.
The streams it occupies are characteristic of the Central African forest: cool, soft, and acidic, tannin-stained from decomposing leaf litter, and shaded by the forest canopy. Hobbyist breeding reports from the RPC 33 collection strain and the Malinga strain record optimal temperatures of 61–66 °F and 68–73 °F respectively — notably cool compared with many tropical species — which reflects the altitude and forest shade of the source drainages. No specific pH or hardness data have been published, but the very soft, acidic conditions common to forest-stream killies in this region are expected and consistent with hobbyist keeping reports that prescribe similarly soft, acidic water.
Feeding
Like most Aphyosemion, A. louessense is a micro-predator in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates — aquatic and terrestrial insects, crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton — encountered at or near the water surface and in the water column. The upturned mouth is well suited to surface picking.
In captivity the species accepts live and frozen small invertebrates readily. Hobbyist accounts describe freshly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii) as an essential food for growing fry, indicating the small gape of juveniles; adults can be fed daphnia, mosquito larvae (bloodworms), tubifex, and similar invertebrate foods. Varied live and frozen feeding produces the best colouration and condition in males.
Mating
Aphyosemion louessense is a non-annual killifish and a plant spawner. Unlike the annual killifishes of seasonally dry savannas that bury desiccation-resistant eggs in substrate and die when pools evaporate, louessense inhabits permanent or near-permanent streams and reproduces continuously over an extended season. The pair spawn over days to weeks, with the male courting the female alongside fine-leaved vegetation, floating plants, or a spawning mop. Spawning embraces are brief — the male pressing alongside the female — and produce a small number of adhesive eggs deposited individually on plant surfaces.
Males are significantly more colourful than females and are territorial toward other males. Hobbyist reports note pronounced aggression between males and recommend a harem-style group of one male with two or three females; this arrangement produces copious eggs every few weeks and reduces the stress and injury that result from competition among males in confined space. The adhesive eggs are individually small and susceptible to fungal infection, requiring antifungal treatment (methylene blue or acriflavin) in the rearing water.
Breeding
Hobbyist breeding reports document two successful captive-spawning approaches: floating plants (giant salvinia combined with Java moss) and conventional spawning mops. The mop method with the Malinga strain yielded approximately one to five eggs per week — a low but steady output consistent with the species' preference for depositing a few eggs at a time rather than mass-clutching. Eggs incubate in water at the ambient tank temperature and hatch in approximately 20 days; there is no diapause and no peat-burial stage.
Fry are very small at hatching and require freshly hatched brine shrimp from the first day of free swimming — finely powdered dry food is not adequate as a sole starter food. Growth is described as average for the genus. Adults in a harem setup do not typically cannibalise fry, and long-term co-existence of multiple size classes in the same tank has been observed, though providing dense cover reduces predation risk. The RPC 33 strain is rated easy to breed; the Malinga strain using spawning mops is rated of average difficulty.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion louessense is a small, peaceful killifish suited to a dedicated species tank or a carefully chosen community of similarly sized, non-competitive fish. Because males are aggressive toward one another, a single-male harem arrangement — one male with two or three females — is the recommended social configuration; multiple males should only be kept together in a large, heavily planted tank with broken sight lines.
The recommended tank size is modest: a 10–15 US gal aquarium is adequate for a trio, provided it is heavily planted or fitted with spawning mops, surface-floating plants, and hiding places among driftwood or leaf litter. Water should be soft and slightly acidic, matching the cool, clear forest-stream conditions of the native range; temperatures of 64–72 °F suit the species well, making it particularly appropriate for unheated or lightly heated tanks in temperate homes. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter is preferred, since the species' small eggs and fry can be drawn into power-filter intakes. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as Aphyosemion are accomplished jumpers.
The species is available in the international killifish hobby through specialist breeders and killifish societies, circulating under its RPC 33 and Malinga collection codes. It is not a common commercial aquarium fish but is reliably found through killifish association auctions and trades.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion louessense as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion B1ab(iii) in 2009 (published in the 2010 IUCN Red List). The assessment was conducted by Moelants, Snoeks, Laleye, and Contreras-MacBeath. The species qualifies as Vulnerable primarily because its extent of occurrence is restricted and it is known from fewer than ten locations — a small total range concentrated in the Kouilou, Louessé, Lefali, and Bouenza river systems of southern Congo-Brazzaville and the upper Nyanga system of Gabon. The primary identified threat is deforestation from timber exploitation: logging operations in the Lower Guinea rainforest remove the riparian canopy, alter stream hydrology, increase siltation, and raise water temperatures in the shallow, shaded brooks the species requires.
Population trend is listed as unknown in the IUCN database, reflecting the absence of systematic monitoring in this remote portion of the Congo Basin periphery. The species is collected for the international ornamental fish trade, though hobbyist supply appears to be sustained by captive breeding rather than wild collection — a positive development for wild populations. Given the ongoing contraction of intact forest within its restricted range and the absence of population data, the Vulnerable assessment remains appropriate and future downlisting is unlikely without targeted surveys and strengthened forest protection in the Kouilou and Niari drainages.
