Described from a river already devastated by one of Brazil's worst mining disasters, Hypostomus freirei carries a double weight: it was named for the beloved educator Paulo Freire at the same moment its type locality in the Rio Paraopeba was buried under tailings from the 2019 Brumadinho collapse.

Taxonomy & naming

Hypostomus freirei was formally described by Penido, Pessali & Zawadzki in 2021, in the Journal of Fish Biology. It was one of two new species introduced in a paper titled 'When destruction comes first: two new species of Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803 (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from a deeply-impacted river in the Rio São Francisco basin in Brazil.' The second species described in the same paper is Hypostomus guajupia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists H. freirei as a valid species within Loricariidae.

The holotype is NUP 22602, a specimen of 8 in SL, collected from the Rio Paraopeba at the municipality of Belo Vale, Minas Gerais State, Brazil (20°27'19"S, 43°59'40"W). The Rio Paraopeba is a tributary of the upper Rio São Francisco. Distribution extends through the São Francisco, upper São Francisco, and Paraopeba river systems.

The species is named in honour of Paulo Reglus Neves Freire (1921–1997), the Brazilian educator and philosopher celebrated for his work in humanistic pedagogy and adult literacy, author of Pedagogy of the Oppressed. The epithet freirei is a genitive honouring him posthumously. The naming was a deliberate statement by the authors, who described the species from a river system gravely damaged by industrial activity — a counterpoint juxtaposing a figure associated with liberation and justice against a site of environmental destruction.

Hypostomus freirei is distinguished from its congener H. guajupia, described in the same paper, by a larger mandibular ramus bearing numerous slender teeth; H. guajupia has a shorter mandibular ramus with fewer, more robust teeth.

Morphology

The holotype specimen reached 8 in standard length (SL), indicating that H. freirei is a medium-to-large Hypostomus by genus standards — substantially larger than many of the smaller Chaco or upland species. The body displays the general Hypostomus bauplan: dorsoventrally flattened with an armour of bony scutes in multiple lateral series, a prominent dorsal fin, and a subterminal suckered mouth.

Diagnostic characters include a depressed body, large dark spots on a pale background, and an absence of keels on the flanks — characters shared with H. guajupia but distinguishing both from other São Francisco Hypostomus. The key differential character between the two species is the mandibular ramus: H. freirei has a large ramus with numerous slender teeth, H. guajupia a shorter ramus with fewer robust teeth.

Sexual dimorphism has not been specifically described for H. freirei. As in other Hypostomus, males typically develop more pronounced interopercular odontodes than females, and gravid females show a broader body profile when viewed dorsally.

Habitat

Hypostomus freirei is known from the Rio Paraopeba and the broader upper Rio São Francisco system in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The type locality is Rio Paraopeba at Belo Vale (20°27'19"S, 43°59'40"W), a headwater-to-midcourse tributary of the upper São Francisco.

The Rio Paraopeba is a clearwater river characteristic of the Brazilian cerrado (tropical savanna) highlands of Minas Gerais, flowing through rocky terrain before entering the São Francisco. No specific water chemistry data for H. freirei are available from the original description. The upper São Francisco system in Minas Gerais typically holds clear to slightly turbid water with temperatures in the range of 68–79 °F, moderately acidic to neutral pH, and low to moderate conductivity — parameters consistent with cerrado river systems.

Microhabitat details are not recorded in the description, but loricariids of this size in the São Francisco basin commonly occupy rocky or gravelly substrates, root tangles, and submerged logs in moderate current.

Feeding

No dietary data specific to Hypostomus freirei have been published. Its bicuspid teeth and general Hypostomus morphology are consistent with a benthic scraping diet of periphyton (algae and biofilm), fine detritus, and organic material from submerged surfaces including wood and rock.

São Francisco Hypostomus in comparable cerrado habitats are documented as algivores and detritivores. The slender teeth of H. freirei's large mandibular ramus may allow more efficient scraping of fine algal films compared with species bearing fewer, stouter teeth.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Hypostomus freirei in the wild or in captivity. The species is not known in the aquarium trade. By analogy with the genus, territorial male behaviour around cave or crevice sites, with development of interopercular odontodes in reproductively active males, is the expected pattern.

Breeding

No breeding data exist for Hypostomus freirei. It has not been reported kept or spawned in captivity. General Hypostomus reproductive biology predicts cave spawning with paternal egg-guarding, but clutch size, incubation period, and larval development are unrecorded for this species.

In the aquarium

Hypostomus freirei is not established in the aquarium hobby and has not been imported or captive-bred as of the time of writing. Given the holotype's size of 8 in SL, adults would require a large aquarium — a minimum of 80–105 US gal with robust filtration and a high-quality benthic environment, including driftwood and rocky hiding places.

The upper São Francisco origin suggests tolerance for clear, moderate-current water in the range of 68–79 °F, near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, and low to moderate hardness. No aquarium husbandry accounts are available.

Conservation

Hypostomus freirei has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. However, its discovery and description are inseparable from a major conservation emergency: the 2019 collapse of the Brumadinho tailings dam operated by Vale S.A., which released approximately 10 million cubic metres of iron ore mine waste into the Rio Paraopeba. The disaster killed 270 people and buried the river's substrate under toxic tailings for hundreds of kilometres downstream, devastating aquatic communities including loricariid populations.

The authors of the species description explicitly noted that H. freirei was described from a river already deeply impacted by this catastrophe — the paper title 'When destruction comes first' alludes directly to the dam collapse. The full extent of the species' range upstream and in adjacent São Francisco tributaries is unknown, and some subpopulations may have survived in unaffected reaches. A formal IUCN assessment accounting for the Brumadinho impact on the Paraopeba drainage would be a priority for this recently described species.

The broader upper São Francisco faces pressures from deforestation, agricultural runoff, eucalyptus plantation expansion, and the historic over-extraction of water for irrigation — all reducing water quality and flow in the cerrado headwaters where this and related species live.
