Taxonomy & naming
Gymnotus sylvius was described in 1999 by James Albert, Fausto Fernandes-Matioli and Lurdes de Almeida-Toledo, part of a broader revision that split the widespread, morphologically variable "Gymnotus carapo" of older literature into many separate species — the paper's title, translated, spoke of "the deconstruction of Gymnotus carapo." It belongs to the family Gymnotidae within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes, a bony-fish lineage defined by a weak electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for propulsion in place of a functional tail. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name.
Despite the shared common name, gymnotiform knifefishes are not related to the Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to an entirely different order of bonytongues; the resemblance is convergent, not a sign of kinship. Within Gymnotidae, the genus Gymnotus — the banded knifefishes — is unusual among gymnotiforms for reaching Central America, and G. sylvius sits among its southeastern Brazilian relatives as a narrow-range endemic rather than a wide-ranging species.
Morphology
Gymnotus sylvius has the stout, laterally compressed, band-marked body typical of its genus: FishBase and the original description record 25–28 (most commonly 25) chocolate-brown bands crossing the body, with wavy, irregular margins and pale interbands that are noticeably wider than the dark bands themselves — a pattern used to distinguish it from close relatives in the old carapo complex. Like other Gymnotus it has no dorsal fin and no true tail fin; locomotion comes from a very long anal fin running most of the length of the underside, thrown into travelling waves that drive the fish forward or backward with equal ease. The species is scaleless.
Maximum size is documented as roughly 16.5 in standard length, with total length reaching around 11.5 in in some measured specimens — a solidly built, medium-to-large knifefish rather than one of the family's giants. Running the length of the body is the electric organ that produces its pulse-type discharge, paired with sensory pores across the skin that read the resulting field; this pulse-type signal, used for electrolocation and communication, is faster and more clock-like than the continuous wave-type discharge of ghost knifefishes like Apteronotus. A karyotype study of Brazilian populations recorded a chromosome number of 2n=40.
Habitat
Gymnotus sylvius is a southeastern Brazilian endemic, known from the Ribeira de Iguape, Paraíba do Sul and Pardo River basins, with confirmed collection localities including sites in and around Botucatu, Bauru and Pirassununga in São Paulo state. This is a comparatively narrow range for the genus, whose other members collectively span from the Río de la Plata in Argentina north through the Amazon, Orinoco and Guianas and up the isthmus into southern Mexico — the only gymnotiform genus to do so.
As with its relatives, it favours sluggish, often turbid fresh water — swamps, floodplain pools and slow river margins with cover from roots, leaf litter and vegetation — habitats where electrolocation, not vision, is the practical way to find prey and avoid obstacles. Gymnotus species are facultative air-breathers, an adaptation that lets them survive in warm, oxygen-poor water where many other fish could not.
Feeding
Data specific to Gymnotus sylvius's diet were not found in the sources consulted, but the genus is uniformly carnivorous and nocturnal, and there is no reason to expect this species to differ. Related, better-studied Gymnotus such as G. carapo hunt after dark over and among cover, taking aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans, located largely through electrolocation rather than sight — a useful strategy in the murky, dimly lit water the genus prefers.
In the aquarium, Gymnotus generally accept meaty live and frozen foods — bloodworm, prawns, earthworms and tubifex — and typically ignore dry foods altogether. They are active, probing predators rather than ambush hunters, working the tank at night and largely inactive by day.
Mating
As in other gymnotiforms, the electric organ discharge in Gymnotus doubles as a social and courtship signal — pulse timing and pattern can carry information about identity, sex and reproductive state, and encounters between rivals or potential mates likely play out partly as an exchange of electric signals in the dark, alongside direct approach. Species-specific detail on courtship behaviour in G. sylvius itself was not found in the sources consulted, so this account draws on genus-level knowledge rather than direct observation of this species.
Breeding in Gymnotidae is seasonal and tied to the wet season and rising floodwaters, which is presumed to hold for G. sylvius given its southeastern Brazilian floodplain and swamp habitat, though this has not been specifically documented for the species.
Breeding
Gymnotidae are unusual among fishes for showing genuine parental care, and in Gymnotus this takes the form of a male-built and male-guarded nest — often a sheltered hollow among vegetation or a mass of floating material — into which the female spawns; the male then guards the eggs and larvae. This is the pattern documented for the well-studied congener Gymnotus carapo, and it is reasonable to expect G. sylvius follows the same genus-typical mode, though no successful captive spawning of G. sylvius specifically was found in the sources consulted.
The species is not established in hobbyist breeding — reproduction in aquaria for Gymnotus generally is rare and poorly documented, and G. sylvius should be assumed to be effectively unbred in captivity. Anyone keeping it should expect to enjoy the fish itself rather than plan on reproducing it.
In the aquarium
Gymnotus sylvius is seen only occasionally outside specialist, research and native-fish circles, but the husbandry principles for the genus apply. It is scaleless, so water quality has to be kept clean and stable — ammonia and nitrate are poorly tolerated — and medications containing copper, or used at standard doses, can be dangerous; reduced doses and careful product choice matter. As a facultative air-breather it tolerates warmer, lower-oxygen water better than most fish, but that is a tolerance, not a licence for poor conditions.
It is a nocturnal predator, active and often territorial after dark, and is not a safe companion for small tankmates or shrimp, which it will hunt by electrolocation once the lights are off. A dim, well-covered tank — roots, pipes, dense planting or floating cover — with a soft, tight-fitting lid (Gymnotus can be capable of leaving the water briefly given their air-breathing habit) suits it far better than a bright, open community setup. Given its size and predatory habits, it is best kept alone or with robust, similarly sized tankmates it cannot swallow.
Conservation
Gymnotus sylvius is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Even so, it is a narrow-range Brazilian endemic restricted to the Ribeira de Iguape, Paraíba do Sul and Pardo basins in one of the most heavily developed and agriculturally intensive parts of South America, which makes it more exposed to habitat degradation than the wide-ranging Least Concern assessment might suggest on its own.
Specific population trend data and threat assessments for the species were not found in the sources consulted. As with other narrow-endemic Neotropical fishes, the general pressures on southeastern Brazilian freshwater habitats — damming, pollution and land-use change in the Paraíba do Sul and Pardo drainages — are the plausible long-term concerns, even where the current status is not elevated.
