Sternopygus sarae is a recently described rattail knifefish from the Orinoco basin of Venezuela, one of the newest additions to a genus already known for its elongated, tapering shape and its quietly humming electric field. Like every member of the order Gymnotiformes, it swims by rippling a single long anal fin rather than by beating a tail, moving backwards as readily as forwards, and it reads the dark water around it with a weak electric organ discharge — a continuous, wave-type signal used for electrolocation and, almost certainly, for communication with other knifefish. Described only in 2023, it remains one of the least-documented gymnotiforms in the hobby literature, known so far mostly from museum material and a single published account of its natural range.

Taxonomy & naming

Sternopygus sarae was formally described in 2023 by Torgersen, Galindo-Cuervo, Reis & Albert, and belongs to the family Sternopygidae — the glass and rattail knifefishes — within the order Gymnotiformes, the New-World electric knifefishes. Like its relatives, it is a bony fish but an unusual one: Gymnotiformes are defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin used for locomotion, and they are only distantly related to the rest of the freshwater fish fauna they share rivers with. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid name.

The species epithet honours Dr. Sara Holmberg Albert, an ichthyologist at the Universidade Federal do Amazonas, in recognition of her support for the describing team's research. As with many recently split Sternopygus species, S. sarae was very likely included under a broader, more widely reported name before its description, and museum records predating 2023 may still refer to it that way. Being so newly named, almost nothing has yet been published on its biology beyond the type material and range data — a common situation for narrow-range gymnotiforms, and one where honesty about the gaps matters more than filling them in.

The common name "knifefish" is shared with the unrelated Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus), which belong to a different order entirely; the resemblance between the groups is convergent body shape, not kinship.

Morphology

Sternopygus sarae has the classic rattail-knifefish build: a slender, laterally compressed body that tapers gradually into a long, thread-like tail, with no dorsal fin and no distinct caudal fin. As in the rest of the genus, propulsion comes almost entirely from a very long anal fin running beneath most of the body, thrown into travelling waves that let the fish glide forward or backward with equal control. The species is scaleless, like all gymnotiforms, which leaves its skin more exposed to water quality and medications than a typical scaled aquarium fish.

Running the length of the body is the electric organ, paired with sensory pores across the skin that read the field it generates. Sternopygidae are wave-type discharge fish, producing a continuous, near-sinusoidal hum rather than the discrete pulses of families such as Gymnotidae — a signal used for electrolocation in the dark and, in well-studied relatives, for signalling identity and sex to other fish. FishBase lists a maximum total length of just 1.5 in for S. sarae, which — if that figure holds up with further collecting — would make it markedly smaller than well-known Sternopygus such as the longtail knifefish (S. macrurus), though size data for this species is still sparse and drawn from limited specimens.

Habitat

Sternopygus sarae is known from the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela, part of the same broad Neotropical drainage system that Sternopygidae occupy on both sides of the Andes, from Panama south to northern Argentina. Within that basin it is presumed, on the strength of what is known for related Sternopygus, to occupy flowing river channels and stream margins rather than still water, likely among submerged roots, leaf litter and other structure that offers cover by day.

Like other gymnotiforms, its electric sense is best suited to dim, often tannin-stained or turbid water where vision is of limited use — a hallmark habitat of the group generally, though specific water chemistry and depth data for S. sarae have not yet been published. Its cryptic habits and nocturnal activity, typical of the genus, make wild individuals difficult to observe directly, which likely explains why so little natural-history detail exists this soon after its description.

Feeding

No diet study has been published specifically for Sternopygus sarae. Based on the well-documented feeding ecology of its closest relative, the longtail knifefish (S. macrurus), Sternopygus as a genus feeds on small invertebrates — copepods, chironomid larvae and other small insect larvae — located at night largely through electrolocation rather than sight, with some seasonal and age-related variation in diet. As nocturnal micro-predators, they forage over the substrate and among cover after dark rather than hunting in open water by day.

In the absence of species-specific data, this genus-level pattern is the most defensible basis for expecting S. sarae's diet in the wild; any statement more specific than that would be guesswork rather than fact.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour have not been documented for Sternopygus sarae. What is known comes from wave-type Sternopygidae generally, where the electric organ discharge plays a central role in social signalling: frequency and pattern differences between males and females, and between rivals, are thought to carry information used in courtship and mate assessment, paralleling the well-studied jamming-avoidance response and sex-specific discharge frequencies documented in the related glass knifefish Eigenmannia. Whether S. sarae follows this pattern closely has not been confirmed by direct observation.

Given how recently the species was described, data on its reproductive behaviour is sparse to non-existent, and any account beyond the electric-signalling generality shared across the family would be speculation rather than documented fact.

Breeding

Breeding in Sternopygus sarae is undocumented; no aquarium or field spawning account for this species is currently available. Sternopygidae in general are egg-layers, typically scattering adhesive eggs among plant roots or floating vegetation during the wet season in warm, soft water, with little to no parental care given afterwards — the closest relative for which reproduction is reasonably well recorded, S. macrurus, matches this pattern, and the glass knifefish Eigenmannia is bred in captivity somewhat more readily than most gymnotiforms.

For S. sarae specifically, however, the honest position is that breeding — captive or wild — is poorly documented, and no reliable protocol exists. Given its very recent description and apparent small size and narrow range, it is not established as a species available to, or bred within, the aquarium hobby.

In the aquarium

Sternopygus sarae is not established in the aquarium trade; as a species described only in 2023 from a limited number of specimens, there is no track record of it being kept or bred by hobbyists, and this entry should not be read as a care guide drawn from direct experience with the species. What follows are precautions that apply to gymnotiform knifefishes generally and would apply to this species if it were ever kept.

Being scaleless, Sternopygus species are sensitive to ammonia and nitrate build-up and to many medications — copper-based treatments in particular should be avoided, and other medications are typically dosed more cautiously than label rates suggest. As a nocturnal electroreceptive predator, it would need dim lighting, ample cover such as roots or pipes to retreat into by day, and tankmates too large to be treated as prey; small fish and shrimp would not be safe companions after dark. Given the near-total absence of husbandry data, anyone encountering this species in the trade should treat it as an unknown quantity requiring careful, conservative care rather than assume typical knifefish husbandry will suffice unmodified.

Conservation

Sternopygus sarae has not yet been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it is listed as Not Evaluated, which is unsurprising for a species described as recently as 2023. No population trend, abundance estimate or threat assessment currently exists for it.

Its known range within the Orinoco basin of Venezuela places it in a region facing pressures common to Neotropical freshwater systems generally, including habitat alteration, water pollution and the cumulative effects of development across the basin, but no species-specific data ties any particular threat to S. sarae. As with many narrow-range, recently described gymnotiforms, the immediate conservation priority is simply further survey work to establish how widely it occurs and how it is faring, rather than a judgement this early in its taxonomic history.
