The wrestling halfbeak is the livebearer that looks nothing like a livebearer. A slim, surface-skimming fish of Southeast Asia's slow canals and flooded fields, Dermogenys pusilla carries the elongated, fixed lower jaw — the "half-beak" — that gives the family its name, and beneath that surface oddity it shares the poeciliids' great trick: internal fertilisation and live birth. Its English name comes from the males, which lock their long jaws together and spar in slow, deliberate trials of strength, a habit that made the fish a wagering animal in parts of its range and a curiosity in the aquarium hobby everywhere else.

Taxonomy & naming

Dermogenys pusilla was described by Heinrich Kuhl and Johan Coenraad van Hasselt in 1823, from material of the Indonesian region — Java lies at the heart of the type area. The genus name combines the Greek derma, "skin," with geny, "jaw" or "face," a reference to the soft, skin-like covering of the elongated lower jaw that defines the halfbeaks. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Dermogenys pusilla Kuhl & van Hasselt, 1823 as the valid name, and it is the type species of the genus.

The placement of the halfbeaks has shifted over the years and is a common source of confusion. The internally fertilising, live-bearing halfbeaks — Dermogenys, Nomorhamphus, Hemirhamphodon and their relatives — are now grouped in the family Zenarchopteridae, separated from the egg-laying marine and estuarine halfbeaks of the Hemiramphidae. FishBase follows this arrangement, listing the species in order Beloniformes, family Zenarchopteridae. The fish therefore sits taxonomically far from the New World poeciliid livebearers, yet has converged on the same reproductive strategy — a striking case of live-bearing evolving independently within the ray-finned fishes.

The common name "wrestling halfbeak" is applied loosely in the trade, and several similar species — notably Dermogenys siamensis and Dermogenys sumatrana — are sometimes sold under it. Much of the broad distribution attributed to D. pusilla in older sources lumps together these related and formerly synonymous forms, so range and size figures in the popular literature should be read with that caveat.

Morphology

Dermogenys pusilla is a slender, elongated, cylindrical fish built for life pressed against the water's surface. Its back is nearly straight and its mouth sits at the top of the head, with the lower jaw drawn out into the characteristic fixed beak while the upper jaw stays short and mobile — an arrangement suited to snapping at prey resting on or just below the surface film. The body is translucent silvery to pale olive, and the fish hangs motionless near the top of the tank like a small floating twig.

The species shows clear sexual dimorphism, and unusually the female is the larger sex: females reach roughly 3 in in standard length while males stay nearer 2 in. Reported maximum sizes vary because some sources aggregate related forms or quote total rather than standard length — FishBase lists a figure as high as 6.5 in TL that sits well above typical hobby measurements and likely reflects pooled or atypical records. Adult males are marked by a red or orange patch on the dorsal fin that the females lack.

The defining male feature is a modified anal fin, the andropodium — the halfbeak analogue of the poeciliid gonopodium — formed from reorganised fin rays and used to deliver sperm internally during mating. The long lower jaw, while diagnostic, is also delicate: it is easily damaged when a startled fish dashes into the glass, which has practical consequences for how the fish is kept.

Habitat

The wrestling halfbeak is a fish of slow and standing waters across Southeast Asia. It lives in rivers, rivulets, canals, drainage ditches, ponds, lakes and flooded fields, and is most abundant in sluggish or stagnant channels where floating plants and rooted aquatics reach the surface — exactly the cover a surface-dwelling fish needs. In the lower Mekong it is recorded from medium and large rivers and from flooded fields, but it is most common in the still, vegetation-choked canals rather than open flowing water.

It is primarily a freshwater fish but tolerates brackish conditions, and it occasionally turns up in semi-brackish water around mangrove swamps, particularly in the rainy season; larvae and early juveniles are sometimes found in the upper reaches of mangroves at that time. FishBase classes the species as living in marine, freshwater and brackish environments, pelagic-neritic in habit, though the great majority of records are from inland fresh water.

Wild water chemistry runs to the neutral-to-alkaline and moderately hard side: FishBase gives pH around 7.0–8.0 and hardness of roughly 9–19 dH, in tropical temperatures of about 75–82 °F. Distribution as conventionally reported spans Indonesia (the type region of Java), Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and the Philippines, though as noted some of this breadth reflects the inclusion of related species under the same name.

Feeding

Dermogenys pusilla is a surface-feeding micro-predator. Its upturned mouth and fixed lower jaw are tools for taking small prey from the surface film: in the wild it feeds on insects and insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms, and it is well placed to snap up terrestrial insects that fall onto the water and aquatic larvae — including mosquito larvae — that come up to breathe. Its trophic level is estimated at around 3.4, placing it firmly among the carnivores.

In the aquarium the fish feeds almost exclusively from the surface and can be reluctant to take anything that sinks. Small live foods suit it best: gut-loaded Drosophila fruit flies are close to ideal because they sit on the surface and match the fish's natural prey, and the halfbeak also takes newly hatched brine shrimp, small bloodworm and similar items. It often refuses dry foods at first, and may need patient conditioning to accept them.

Because the fish is a constant, light grazer and a wary one, several small feedings of surface-borne food tend to work better than a single large drop. Good, varied nutrition is more than a matter of condition here: poor diet is widely linked to breeding failure in this species, which makes the feeding regime central to keeping it well.

Mating

Like all zenarchopterid halfbeaks, Dermogenys pusilla reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male's anal fin is modified into an andropodium — the halfbeak counterpart of the poeciliid gonopodium — and during mating it is used to transfer sperm directly into the female. This is the same live-bearing solution arrived at by the New World poeciliids, but reached independently within an entirely separate fish lineage.

Males are persistent and, true to the common name, combative. Rival males lock their long lower jaws together and wrestle in slow, deliberate contests of strength, pushing against one another until one gives way. This jaw-locking behaviour is conspicuous enough that the fish has been used as a fighting and wagering animal in parts of its native range, where two males confined together in a small vessel will spar more or less continuously.

Detailed accounts of courtship and of sperm storage in this species are sparse in the reliable literature, so it is better to say less than to over-claim: what is well established is internal fertilisation via the andropodium and the territorial, jaw-wrestling aggression of males. Whether D. pusilla practises the superfetation — carrying several broods at different stages of development at once — documented in some other livebearers is not something the cache supports asserting here.

Breeding

Dermogenys pusilla is viviparous, giving birth to small numbers of fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Reported brood sizes are modest for a livebearer — commonly around 10 to 20 fry, with sources citing up to roughly 30 — and gestation is strongly temperature-dependent, generally running somewhere between three and six weeks. The fry are born well developed and can take powdered dry foods and brine shrimp nauplii from birth.

The species has a reputation as one of the harder livebearers to breed successfully. Mating itself is not the obstacle; the difficulty is that females frequently abort or deliver still-born fry. This is widely attributed to nutrition, with some authors specifically implicating dietary deficiency, so a high-quality, varied diet of live surface foods is regarded as the key to carrying broods to term. The fish is also sensitive to water quality and to sudden swings in temperature or chemistry, both of which can stress gravid females.

Where broods are carried to term, the newborns need immediate cover, as adults — including the mother — will predate them; breeders typically use dense floating plant cover or move the fry to grow them on. The combination of small broods, finicky nutritional requirements and sensitivity to husbandry is what sets this fish apart from the easy, prolific New World livebearers and makes it a project for the more experienced keeper.

In the aquarium

The wrestling halfbeak is a rewarding but demanding aquarium fish, and not a beginner's livebearer despite the family association. It is the most commonly traded halfbeak, valued for its unusual shape and surface-skimming habit, but it asks for conditions and attention that the hardy guppies and platies do not. It is best kept in a quiet, well-covered tank with a calm surface and plenty of floating plants, which provide both security and the cover its prey and fry depend on.

Two husbandry points dominate. First, the fish is a nervous, powerful jumper with a delicate beak: a startled halfbeak will dash and can split its lower jaw against the glass or a tight cover, so a securely covered tank with no gaps and subdued disturbance around it is essential. Second, it is sensitive to poor water quality and to abrupt changes — small, frequent water changes are preferable to large or infrequent ones, and the fish dislikes sudden shifts in temperature or chemistry.

Water should be neutral to slightly hard and alkaline, around pH 7.0–8.0 and up to roughly 20 dH, at tropical temperatures of about 75–82 °F; the species tolerates slightly brackish water (to a specific gravity of around 1.005) but does perfectly well in hard fresh water. Feeding is the other half of keeping it well — it wants live surface foods such as fruit flies and brine shrimp and may snub dry food. Kept properly fed, properly covered and in stable water, it is a striking and characterful surface fish.

Conservation

Dermogenys pusilla is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 2 September 2020. A Data Deficient listing means there is not enough information on the species' distribution, population or threats to judge its extinction risk — which is complicated here by the long-standing taxonomic confusion between D. pusilla and several similar halfbeaks that have at times been treated as the same species, blurring exactly which populations any range or status statement refers to.

In practical terms the fish is widespread, common in suitable slow and stagnant waters across its range, and supports minor local fisheries as well as a steady presence in the aquarium trade; it is not flagged under CITES or CMS, both of which list it as not evaluated. None of that, on its own, resolves the data gaps that underlie the Data Deficient designation.

For an aquarist the responsible reading is straightforward: there is no evidence the species is threatened, but neither is there the population information that would let anyone be confident about its status, and the unresolved species limits within the wrestling-halfbeak complex are part of why. Buying captive-bred or responsibly sourced stock and never releasing aquarium fish into local waters remain the sound default positions.
