Dermogenys siamensis is a slender, surface-dwelling halfbeak of the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins of mainland Southeast Asia — one of the live-bearing toothcarps' more unusual cousins. Its lower jaw is drawn out into a long, fixed "beak" while the upper jaw stays short and mobile, an arrangement built for snapping small prey off the water's surface film. Despite belonging to the Beloniformes rather than the New World livebearers, the genus shares their defining trick: internal fertilisation by way of a modified anal fin, and the birth of fully formed young. It is a freshwater fish of shallow, slow, vegetated waters, assessed as Least Concern, and only an occasional visitor to the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Dermogenys siamensis was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1934, the species epithet recording its Siamese (Thai) origin. It belongs to the genus Dermogenys, the freshwater halfbeaks, which Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — places in the family Zenarchopteridae within the order Beloniformes, the same order that contains the needlefishes and flyingfishes. The Zenarchopteridae are the internally fertilising halfbeaks, a small Indo-Pacific family distinguished from the egg-scattering marine halfbeaks by their viviparous reproduction.

The genus name is built from the Greek derma, "skin," and geny or genys, "face" or "jaw," a reference to the distinctive jaw structure of these fishes. Several names have circulated for the freshwater halfbeaks of the region, and Dermogenys siamensis has at times been confused with the wide-ranging Dermogenys pusilla; the synonym Dermogenys pusillus borealis (Brembach, 1991) reflects that tangled history. FishBase catalogues the species under SpecCode 60230, citing Kottelat's 2001 Fishes of Laos as the principal reference for its identity and distribution.

Reports of the species from Malaysia and Indonesia are regarded as needing confirmation and may instead refer to other members of the genus, so the well-supported range is the Indochinese mainland rather than the Sunda region. Where firm species-level facts are sparse, the safer reading is to treat Dermogenys as a genus of closely similar, easily confused halfbeaks and to lean on the verified Mekong and Chao Phraya records for D. siamensis specifically.

Morphology

Dermogenys siamensis is a small, elongate fish with the unmistakable halfbeak profile: a greatly extended, beak-like lower jaw paired with a short, triangular upper jaw that remains free to move. The body is slim and pike-like, slightly compressed, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back near the tail — the build of a fish that hangs just beneath the surface and darts forward at small prey. FishBase records a maximum length of about 1.5 in SL in males and unsexed fish, with females reaching around 2.5 in SL, the larger size of the female being typical of the live-bearing halfbeaks.

Colouration is generally subdued and cryptic against a bright, reflective water surface — silvery to translucent flanks over a pale belly, suited to a fish viewed from below by predators and from above by prey. As in other Dermogenys, males tend to be the smaller, somewhat more colourful sex and carry the modified anal fin used in mating, while females are larger and plainer. The published facts on fine pigment detail for this particular species are limited, so claims beyond the broad halfbeak pattern are best left unstated.

The long lower jaw is fixed and cannot itself open, so feeding is driven by the mobile upper jaw and a rapid forward strike — a specialisation shared across surface-feeding halfbeaks and one that ties the fish closely to the air-water interface for both feeding and respiration.

Habitat

The species is a freshwater halfbeak of the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins, ranging across Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam. The IUCN assessment notes records as far upstream as the Mun River in Thailand and the Champon and Banghiang tributaries in Lao PDR, mapping a distribution that follows the lowland and mid-reach waters of the Indochinese drainages rather than the coastal brackish zones favoured by some congeners.

Dermogenys siamensis lives at the surface of shallow, slow-moving and standing waters — vegetated streams, creeks, wetlands and the quiet margins of permanent and seasonal rivers. It is a small surface carnivore that keeps to the top few centimetres of the water column among floating and emergent plants, where the structure offers both ambush cover and a steady supply of small drifting and surface-borne prey. FishBase characterises it as a pelagic, tropical freshwater fish of shallow, standing water.

Unlike several other halfbeaks of Southeast Asia that occur in brackish estuaries and coastal ditches, D. siamensis is not reported from brackish water; it appears to be a genuinely inland, freshwater member of the genus. That habitat preference — warm, still, plant-rich shallows — is the practical key to understanding both its biology and its modest aquarium requirements.

Feeding

Dermogenys siamensis is a small carnivore and a dedicated surface feeder, occupying the trophic position FishBase estimates at roughly 3.1 — squarely that of a predator of small animals. Its long beak and upward-tilted mouth are tools for picking insects and other small invertebrates off the surface film: terrestrial insects that fall onto the water, emerging aquatic insects, mosquito and other dipteran larvae hanging at the surface, and tiny crustaceans.

The fish hunts by hanging motionless just below the surface and striking forward at prey detected overhead or alongside, a hunting style that ties it tightly to open surface lanes among the vegetation. Larger prey is dealt with by the rapid snap of the short, mobile upper jaw rather than by any movement of the fixed lower beak.

In captivity, halfbeaks of this genus are best fed small live and frozen foods that mimic this surface diet — mosquito larvae, bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp and small floating insects — offered at or near the surface. Genus-level husbandry guidance treats them as insectivores that take readily to live foods and accept frozen alternatives, while flake and sinking foods are a poor match for a fish that feeds almost exclusively from the top of the water.

Mating

Like the other Zenarchopteridae, Dermogenys siamensis practises internal fertilisation — the feature that sets this family apart from the egg-laying marine halfbeaks and aligns it, in reproductive strategy if not in ancestry, with the New World livebearers. In the halfbeaks the intromittent organ is the andropodium, a modified anal fin formed from specialised rays that the male uses to transfer sperm to the female; the genus's common name of "wrestling halfbeak" comes from the vigorous jaw-to-jaw contests males engage in around females.

Sexual dimorphism follows the live-bearing pattern: males are the smaller sex and carry the modified anal fin, while females are larger and lack it. Courtship and competition centre on access to females, with males sparring and displaying; the fixed beaks that make the fish such efficient surface hunters double as the implements of their characteristic jaw-locking bouts.

Detailed, species-specific accounts of courtship sequence, sperm storage and the precise mechanics of insemination in D. siamensis are sparse in the literature, so the reliable picture is the family-level one: internal fertilisation by way of the male's modified anal fin, followed by internal development of the young. Where the fine detail is uncertain, it is left unstated rather than guessed.

Breeding

Dermogenys is a live-bearing — more precisely a viviparous to ovoviviparous — genus, and the IUCN explicitly describes D. siamensis as a live-bearing species. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing brood and gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than scattering eggs. Across the genus, three reproductive strategies have been described: females that release fertilised eggs hatching after a short incubation, females that retain the eggs internally and release them just before hatching, and fully viviparous forms whose young are nourished internally and born live.

Broods in the genus are characteristically small — a modest number of large, well-developed fry rather than the hundreds produced by egg-scattering fishes. The newborn young are comparatively big and advanced, an investment-per-offspring strategy that fits the family's internal-fertilisation biology. Genus-level observations note that the well-developed fry may remain near the mother for a period after birth, and that providing surface cover such as floating plants improves their survival.

The specific gestation length, exact brood size and whether superfetation (carrying overlapping broods at different stages, as seen in some poeciliids and halfbeaks) occurs in D. siamensis are not well documented in the sources at hand, so those figures are noted as data-sparse rather than filled in. What is firm is the live-bearing mode itself and the genus's general pattern of few, large, advanced young.

In the aquarium

Dermogenys siamensis is only an occasional fish in the international aquarium trade, and it is more a specialist's halfbeak than a beginner's livebearer. It is a peaceful, strictly top-dwelling fish, and the single most important husbandry point is a tightly fitting lid: surface-oriented halfbeaks are nervous and prone to jumping, and an open or poorly covered tank invites losses. Calm, well-oxygenated water with a gently moving or still surface, plenty of floating cover and a long, open surface lane for swimming suit the species best.

Water-parameter guidance for this fish is genus-level rather than species-verified, so it should be read as a sensible starting envelope rather than a strict prescription: broadly, neutral to slightly alkaline water around pH 7.0 to 8.0, moderate hardness, and a tropical temperature in the low-to-high 20s Celsius. Because D. siamensis is a genuinely freshwater Mekong and Chao Phraya species — not one of the brackish-water congeners — it does not require added salt, and keeping it in clean, stable freshwater is appropriate.

Its diet makes it a fish for keepers willing to supply small live and frozen surface foods rather than relying on flake. It is peaceful with fish that share its temperament but should not be combined with boisterous or surface-disturbing tankmates, and its delicate jaw is easily damaged by collisions in a crowded or under-furnished tank. For an aquarist who can meet those conditions, it is a calm, characterful surface fish; for a casual community keeper, it is a poor fit.

Conservation

Dermogenys siamensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment e.T181037A1691519, assessed 27 July 2011, published 2012, assessor C. Vidthayanon). The justification rests on the species' wide distribution across the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins and the absence of any major known threat at the species level, with the population trend recorded as unknown and the assessment flagged as needing updating.

The threats that are noted are local and habitat-based rather than direct exploitation: degradation of its shallow, vegetated waters through anthropogenic infrastructure, including housing, urban expansion and commercial or industrial development. As a small surface fish of slow and standing waters, it is sensitive to the loss and alteration of wetlands and quiet river margins, even though it is not a target of significant fishing — FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low and the fish as harmless to humans.

Its presence in the aquarium trade is described as occasional rather than intensive, so collection for the hobby is not flagged as a conservation concern. The responsible position for an aquarist is the routine one for any non-native fish: enjoy captive-kept stock, and never release halfbeaks or their water into local waterways, where an adaptable surface predator could establish where it does not belong.
