Taxonomy & naming

Nomorhamphus philippinus was described by Ladiges in 1972, the parenthetical authority indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus and has since been recombined into Nomorhamphus. It belongs to the family Zenarchopteridae, the viviparous halfbeaks, within the order Beloniformes — the same order that contains the needlefishes, flyingfishes and the egg-laying halfbeaks. The Zenarchopteridae are distinguished from the egg-laying halfbeaks of the family Hemiramphidae by their internal fertilisation, a reproductive shift that arose independently of the live-bearing of the New World Poeciliidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; FishBase and iNaturalist both treat the species as a valid, Philippine-endemic member of Nomorhamphus.

The genus name Nomorhamphus is built from Greek elements; FishBase parses the first part from nema, a filament or thread, combined with rhamphos, meaning bill or beak — a reference to the elongated lower jaw characteristic of halfbeaks. The specific epithet philippinus simply marks the species' origin in the Philippines, the archipelago to which it is endemic.

Nomorhamphus is a genus centred on Sulawesi, where most of its species occur; N. philippinus is one of the comparatively few members found outside that island, on the Philippine archipelago.
