Nomorhamphus pinnimaculatus is a small, viviparous halfbeak endemic to the Philippines — one of the few members of an otherwise largely Sulawesi-centred genus to live north of Wallace's Line. Described by Meisner in 2001 and named for the spotting on its fins, it is a slender, surface-oriented stream fish that, like all of its family, fertilises internally and bears live young rather than scattering eggs. It is poorly documented in both the scientific and aquarium literature, and the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, so much of what can responsibly be said about it is drawn from the well-studied biology of the genus and family rather than from species-specific study.

Taxonomy & naming

Nomorhamphus pinnimaculatus was described by A. C. Meisner in 2001 and is placed in the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks of South-East Asia and the western Pacific — a group separated from the egg-laying marine halfbeaks (Hemiramphidae) on the strength of their distinctive viviparous reproduction. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, listing the species as Nomorhamphus pinnimaculatus Meisner, 2001 within the genus Nomorhamphus.

The genus Nomorhamphus is overwhelmingly associated with the freshwater streams of Sulawesi, Indonesia, where most of its species are endemic; N. pinnimaculatus is one of the comparatively few members that occur in the Philippines, a distinction confirmed by both FishBase and the species' separate IUCN assessment. It is distinct from the other Philippine member of the genus, N. philippinus of Mindanao, and from the many Sulawesi-endemic Nomorhamphus. The generic name combines Greek roots commonly rendered as "thread" or "filament" and rhamphos, "beak," a reference to the elongated lower-jaw beak that gives halfbeaks their name; the species epithet pinnimaculatus is built from Latin pinna ("fin") and macula ("spot"), i.e. "spotted-fin," for the fin markings that distinguish it.

Beyond the original description and the standard database and Red List entries, the species has attracted little published attention, and no substantial taxonomic revision specific to it was located. As with much of the genus, the practical picture of the fish is assembled from family-level biology and a handful of distributional records rather than from a deep species-specific literature.

Morphology

Nomorhamphus pinnimaculatus is a small fish, reaching roughly 2 in in standard length according to FishBase. In overall form it follows the halfbeak body plan of the genus: an elongate, slender, near-cylindrical body built for life at and just below the water surface, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back toward the tail and the mouth positioned for surface feeding. The common name "Pinnate Halfbeak" and the epithet pinnimaculatus both point to spotting or markings on the fins as a recognition feature.

The defining structure of the genus is the beak — an elongation of the lower jaw projecting beyond the upper — though the degree of beak development varies considerably across Nomorhamphus, from long and prominent to greatly reduced. Detailed meristic and colour descriptions specific to N. pinnimaculatus rest in the original 2001 description and are not reproduced here in detail; the cache pass located no additional morphological treatment, so finer points of fin-ray counts and live coloration are best regarded as data sparse.

As in other internally fertilising halfbeaks, the sexes differ: males are typically the smaller sex and bear a modified anal fin (the andropodium) used to transfer sperm, while females are larger and deeper-bodied, particularly when carrying young. Species-specific figures for the degree of size difference and for male coloration in N. pinnimaculatus were not available in the cache.

Habitat

The species is a freshwater fish endemic to the Philippines. FishBase records it as a tropical, freshwater, pelagic species, consistent with the surface-dwelling habits of the genus, and the IUCN assessment treats it as a genuine Philippine endemic with a restricted extent of occurrence on the order of 12,0 mi². This is a small range, and the limited distributional data is part of why the species is hard to assess.

Most Nomorhamphus are small fishes of clear, flowing freshwater streams and stream margins, where halfbeaks hold position near the surface and take food from the surface film. In the absence of detailed habitat notes specific to N. pinnimaculatus, this stream-and-surface association is the most defensible general picture, with the caveat that conditions across the Philippine range have not been characterised in the sources at hand.

No specific data on the water chemistry, temperature regime, or seasonal behaviour of the species' native waters was located in the cache, so any precise figures for its habitat would be guesswork. This opportunistic surface feeding is the most likely mode for N. pinnimaculatus, but should be read as inference from the family rather than a documented fact for the species.

In aquarium care of related halfbeaks, keepers emphasise small floating and surface-taken foods, since these fish are reluctant to feed from the substrate. Comparable husbandry would be a reasonable starting point for N. pinnimaculatus, with the explicit caveat that no dedicated care record for the species was found.

Mating

Like all Zenarchopteridae, Nomorhamphus pinnimaculatus reproduces by internal fertilisation — the trait that separates the family from the egg-scattering marine halfbeaks and the feature most consistently confirmed for the genus. In place of the rod-like gonopodium of the New World poeciliids, male halfbeaks possess an andropodium: a modified anal fin used to transfer sperm to the female. Courtship and copulation thus occur in the water column rather than over a spawning site, and there is no nest or egg deposition.

The fine details of pair formation, male display, and any sperm-storage capacity specific to N. pinnimaculatus were not located in the cache. In viviparous halfbeaks generally, males pursue and position alongside females to achieve internal insemination, and the larger female then carries the developing young. Whether N. pinnimaculatus shows the sperm storage and successive-brood pattern seen in some livebearers is not documented in the available sources.

In Nomorhamphus and related viviparous halfbeaks, nutrition of the developing young ranges from largely yolk-dependent (lecithotrophic) to partly maternally provisioned (facultatively matrotrophic) depending on the species, and broods are characteristically small — often in the single digits to low teens — with the young relatively large and well developed at birth compared with the tiny fry of many egg-layers. These figures describe the genus, not N. pinnimaculatus specifically, and should be treated as a general expectation rather than a measured value for this fish.

As with other halfbeaks kept in aquaria, newborn young would be expected to be sizeable, surface-oriented, and able to take small foods at once; adults may predate fry, so cover or separation is the usual precaution in the hobby. None of this is documented for N. pinnimaculatus in particular, and the breeding biology of the species is best described as known only by family analogy.

In the aquarium

Nomorhamphus pinnimaculatus is not a commonly traded aquarium fish, and no species-specific husbandry record was located in the cache — the American Livebearer Association cache pass returned no dedicated page for it. The notes here are therefore extrapolated from the care of related viviparous halfbeaks and offered cautiously.

Halfbeaks in general are surface-dwelling, somewhat nervous fishes that do best in calm, well-covered aquaria; they are prone to startling and can injure the beak by dashing into the glass or the surface, so a tight lid and unhurried surroundings matter. They are surface feeders that take small floating foods and live or frozen items, and they appreciate clean, stable water. A planted surface (floating plants) suits both their feeding habits and their preference for cover.

Given the lack of documented requirements for N. pinnimaculatus, a keeper would be working largely by analogy and observation. Until better data exists, the honest position is that this is a poorly known fish, rare in the hobby, whose specific aquarium needs have not been published in the sources reviewed; anyone keeping it should treat husbandry as provisional and watch the fish closely.

Conservation

Nomorhamphus pinnimaculatus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 10 August 2020 and published in the 2021 update. The Data Deficient listing means there is not enough information on the species' population, range, and threats to judge its risk of extinction — not that it is necessarily secure.

The assessment confirms a genuinely narrow Philippine endemic, with an extent of occurrence estimated at roughly 12,0 mi². A small, restricted range of that kind is inherently more vulnerable to localised pressures — habitat alteration, water-quality change, and the like — even when the data needed to quantify those pressures is absent. The DD status is therefore best read as a flag for attention rather than reassurance.

For an aquarist, the practical implications are straightforward: this is a little-known, narrowly distributed species that should not be assumed to be common, and its scarcity in the trade reflects genuine scarcity of knowledge as much as of fish. Improved survey and life-history data would be needed before its conservation status could be meaningfully revised.
