Barbodes ivis was described by Alvin Seale in 1910. Seale was an American ichthyologist who collected extensively across the Philippines in the early twentieth century, and the original description was based on material from the archipelago. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — places the species in the genus Barbodes, subfamily Smiliogastrinae, family Cyprinidae.

The genus Barbodes has a complex taxonomic history. It was long synonymised within the broad catch-all genus Puntius, under which many Philippine and Southeast Asian barb species were carried throughout the twentieth century. Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) and subsequent revisions resurrected and redefined Barbodes as a distinct genus for a subset of Philippine and regional barbs. The valid current combination is therefore Barbodes ivis (Seale, 1910), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was originally described under a different genus name. Older literature and some databases may list this fish as Puntius ivis.

The specific epithet ivis has not been widely documented in etymology sources accessible at the time of this writing; its meaning, if derivable, likely refers to a place or person associated with Seale's Philippine collections.

Morphology

The freshwater fauna of the Philippines faces some of the most severe habitat pressures in Southeast Asia: intensive deforestation across most of the major islands has caused widespread sedimentation and degradation of lowland rivers and streams; agricultural expansion and associated pesticide and fertiliser runoff further impair water quality; and dam construction and water extraction have altered flow regimes in many watersheds.

Barbodes ivis is endemic to the Philippines and therefore has no refuge population outside the archipelago. Narrow-range endemics with restricted catchment distributions are particularly exposed when a single basin or island's freshwater habitat is compromised.
