Phalloceros leticiae is one of the twenty-one new species that emerged when Paulo Lucinda took apart the small Brazilian livebearer genus Phalloceros in 2008. A diminutive toothcarp of the upper rio Araguaia in central Brazil, it is known to science mainly from the museum series of that revision: barely larger than a fingernail, marked by a single round, ocellated spot on the flank, and so far without a body of aquarium or field-biology literature behind it. It is a fish defined for now by its anatomy and its place in a recently clarified genus rather than by any popular acquaintance — a reminder of how much of the Neotropical livebearer fauna remains known only from the collections that named it.

Taxonomy & naming

Phalloceros leticiae was described by Paulo H. F. Lucinda in 2008 as part of his systematic revision of the genus Phalloceros (Neotropical Ichthyology 6(2):113–158). That study transformed the genus from a group long treated as effectively monotypic — most aquarium and faunal literature had referred nearly all material to the "caudimaculatus" complex — into a genus of more than twenty recognised species, of which P. leticiae was one of twenty-one described as new. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes accepts Phalloceros leticiae Lucinda, 2008 as a valid name, placing it in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae, within the toothcarp order Cyprinodontiformes.

The genus name Phalloceros, erected by Eigenmann in 1907, combines the Greek phallos (penis) with keras (horn), in reference to the elaborate male gonopodium that characterises these livebearers. The species epithet leticiae honours Leticia M. Lucinda. The common name applied by FishBase, "Araguaia toothcarp," simply marks the fish's home drainage; there is no established hobby name, consistent with a species that is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade.

Lucinda separated P. leticiae from its congeners on a combination of meristic and morphometric characters rather than on colour, which in this genus is subtle. The species is distinguished by the presence of teeth on the fourth ceratobranchial and the absence of a membranous tip anterior to the fourth and fifth gonopodial rays; it differs from the similar P. ocellatus in postorbital length and from P. mikrommatos in anal-fin ray counts. These are the fine, repeatable differences on which the modern Phalloceros species are built.

Morphology

Phalloceros leticiae is a very small fish. The original description records a maximum length of about 0.5 in in standard length, placing it among the most diminutive of livebearers — a scale comparable to the smallest mosquitofishes. Meristic counts from the revision give 7–8 dorsal soft rays, 9–10 anal soft rays, and 31 vertebrae, the compact, lightly built body plan typical of Poeciliinae.

The most useful field mark is a roundish, well-defined ocellated lateral spot on the flank — a dark blotch ringed by a paler halo — which is present in most specimens and only rarely absent. This ocellus is a recurring theme across several of the revised Phalloceros species, and the precise size, position and definition of the spot, taken together with body proportions, help separate them. Beyond that, P. leticiae is a plain, silvery-bodied little fish without the bold spotting or melanistic blotching seen in some of its relatives.

Like all poeciliines, the species shows the family's characteristic sexual dimorphism: males are smaller and bear a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — while females are larger-bodied. Lucinda's diagnosis relies in part on sex-specific postorbital measurements (39.2–42.2% of standard length in females, 36.7–42.3% in males), and on details of the male gonopodial rays, underscoring how much of the species' identity rests on the reproductive anatomy that defines the genus.

Habitat

Phalloceros leticiae is known from the upper rio Araguaia, a major tributary of the rio Tocantins in central Brazil. FishBase classes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical species — a fish of the lower water column and bottom margins of small waters within that basin. The Araguaia drains the cerrado and gallery-forest landscapes of the Brazilian central plateau before joining the Tocantins, and small poeciliines of this kind typically occupy the slow, shallow, marginal habitats of such systems: vegetated stream edges, backwaters and pools rather than the main channel.

No species-specific data on water temperature, pH or hardness for P. leticiae appear in the cache, and none should be invented; the figures given for the genus and basin below are general envelopes for small cerrado-drainage poeciliines, not measured values for this species. As a small-bodied, fast-reproducing livebearer it is likely tolerant of the warm, somewhat variable conditions characteristic of these shallow waters, but the published record does not document its precise requirements.

Because the species is documented chiefly from the type material of the 2008 revision, the fine detail of its distribution within the upper Araguaia — how widespread it is, and what microhabitats it favours — remains sparsely known. This data-poor status is reflected directly in its conservation assessment.

Feeding

There is no published diet study specific to Phalloceros leticiae, and the cache contains no feeding data for the species. What can be said is by inference from the genus and from small poeciliines generally: Phalloceros are micro-omnivores, taking a mixture of algae, detritus, diatoms and small aquatic invertebrates from the substrate, plant surfaces and water column. A FishBase trophic level of about 3.0 for the species is consistent with this mixed, slightly carnivorous feeding rather than strict herbivory.

Small livebearers of this kind are typically opportunistic grazers, working continuously over biofilm and surfaces and taking whatever small drifting or settled items are available, including insect larvae. The balance of plant to animal matter in the wild diet is unknown for this species and likely varies with habitat and season, as it does in better-studied relatives.

This section is deliberately brief: the honest position is that P. leticiae has no documented feeding biology of its own, and the genus-level generalisation above is the limit of what the sources support.

Mating

Phalloceros leticiae shares the reproductive system that defines the Poeciliidae: fertilisation is internal, achieved through the male gonopodium, the rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin. In males of this genus the gonopodial tip carries a distinctive set of hooks and processes, and details of those rays figure in Lucinda's diagnosis of the species — the very structures used to transfer sperm are also the characters that separate one Phalloceros from another.

In poeciliines, mating is continuous rather than seasonal or nest-based: males pursue females and attempt copulation using the gonopodium, and females of many species can store viable sperm internally to fertilise successive broods from a single insemination. No courtship behaviour, sperm-storage duration or mating-system detail has been documented specifically for P. leticiae, so these mechanisms are described here at the level of the subfamily rather than the species.

The cache is explicit that species-specific reproductive data for P. leticiae were not located, and that the genus belongs to the lecithotrophic (yolk-nourished) poeciliines rather than the placental, matrotrophic lineages such as Heterandriini. Whether superfetation — the carrying of several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously — occurs in this species is not recorded; it is therefore not asserted here.

Breeding

As a member of the Poeciliinae, Phalloceros leticiae is viviparous: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. The cache indicates that Phalloceros are lecithotrophic livebearers, meaning the embryos are nourished by yolk supplied in the egg rather than by a placental connection to the mother — the ancestral condition for most poeciliines outside the matrotrophic Heterandriini.

No brood size, gestation period, or fry-rearing data specific to P. leticiae are available; FishBase carries no reproduction figures for the species, and none are invented here. By analogy with comparably tiny poeciliines, broods are likely to be small, in keeping with the fish's very small body, and the newborn fry would be fully formed miniature adults able to swim and feed from birth. FishBase's high-resilience rating for the species — a population doubling time under fifteen months — is consistent with the rapid, repeated reproduction typical of small livebearers.

This remains, in practical terms, an undocumented breeder. The genus-level picture is clear; the species-level specifics are genuinely data-sparse, and the responsible treatment is to say so rather than to import numbers from better-known livebearers.

In the aquarium

Phalloceros leticiae has essentially no aquarium record. FishBase populates no maintenance or husbandry data for the species, and it does not feature in the livebearer hobby in the way the common Phalloceros caudimaculatus (the "dusky millions fish") historically has. Any keeping recommendations would therefore be extrapolation rather than experience, and the cache supports none.

Were the species ever maintained, the general expectations for small cerrado-drainage poeciliines would apply: a small, well-planted aquarium with gentle filtration, warm tropical temperatures, and a varied micro-diet of small flake, powdered foods and tiny live or frozen items. Its very small adult size — under 1 in — would make it a fish for a dedicated species or nano setup rather than a general community, where it would be outcompeted at feeding time.

The honest summary is that this is a wild species known from museum material, not an aquarium fish. Hobbyists interested in Phalloceros are far more likely to encounter the widespread P. caudimaculatus; P. leticiae remains, for now, a name on a checklist rather than a fish in a tank.

Conservation

Phalloceros leticiae is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 7 November 2018 (species ID 140646546). The Data Deficient category means there is insufficient information on the species' distribution and population to make a meaningful judgement of its extinction risk — an unsurprising status for a fish described only in 2008 and known chiefly from its type material in the upper rio Araguaia.

No quantitative population or distribution data are available beyond the DD listing, and the species is not evaluated under CITES or CMS. FishBase characterises it as harmless and of low fishing vulnerability, which simply reflects its tiny size and lack of any commercial interest rather than any assessment of conservation security.

The practical conservation point is one of knowledge rather than active threat: until the geographic range and abundance of P. leticiae within the Araguaia–Tocantins system are better documented, its true status cannot be judged. The upper Araguaia basin faces broad pressures from agriculture and water-resource development across the Brazilian cerrado, which makes the absence of basic distributional data for its endemic small fishes a genuine gap rather than a benign one.
