Taxonomy & naming
Poecilia hispaniolana was described by Luis René Rivas in 1978 in the journal Northeast Gulf Science, in a paper titled "A new species of poeciliid fish of the genus Poecilia from Hispaniola, with reinstatement and redescription of P. dominicensis (Evermann and Clark)." The work did two things at once: it named the new species hispaniolana and, in the same study, reinstated and redescribed a second Hispaniolan molly, Poecilia dominicensis, from which Rivas distinguished his new fish. The two species occur together on the island, so a key part of the original description was separating hispaniolana from its close, sympatric relative.
The species sits in the genus Poecilia — the true mollies — within the family Poeciliidae, the New World live-bearing toothcarps, and the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, recording it as Poecilia hispaniolana Rivas, 1978. FishBase carries it under SpecCode 27727 and GBIF under taxon key 5203791. As a Greater Antillean endemic, it is one of a cluster of Poecilia species that reached and diversified on the Caribbean islands rather than the South American mainland that anchors the genus's better-known members.
The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, meaning "varied" or "many-coloured," a reference to the variegated patterning common in these fishes. The species epithet hispaniolana is geographic, naming the island of Hispaniola to which the fish is endemic.
Morphology
Poecilia hispaniolana is a small molly that shows the marked sexual size dimorphism typical of the poeciliids: females grow considerably larger than males. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 1.5 in in males and unsexed fish and roughly 2.5 in in females, so a large female is well over half again the length of a male. The body is the moderately deep, laterally compressed form usual for stream-dwelling Poecilia, built for life in shallow flowing water rather than open lakes.
Detailed colour and meristic notes for the living fish are sparse in the accessible literature — FishBase carries only a line drawing rather than a photograph — so fine descriptive points are best taken from Rivas's original 1978 description, which was framed largely around the characters that separate hispaniolana from the sympatric Poecilia dominicensis. As in other mollies, the most reliable external distinction between the sexes is the male's gonopodium, a slender rod formed from modified anal-fin rays; females retain a normal fan-shaped anal fin and, when carrying young, the dark gravid patch characteristic of pregnant livebearers.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Hispaniola, the second-largest island of the Greater Antilles, and is found in both of the countries that share it — Haiti to the west and the Dominican Republic to the east. It is a strictly freshwater, non-migratory fish of tropical streams; FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic and notes that it inhabits streams over shallow riffles, the broken, fast-flowing reaches where water tumbles over a shallow bed.
Reported water conditions are warm and narrow: FishBase gives a temperature range of roughly 22 to 25 degrees Celsius, consistent with lowland and mid-elevation Caribbean streams. The species is rated as having high biological resilience, with a population doubling time under fifteen months, and low vulnerability to fishing pressure — a profile of a small, fast-reproducing fish well suited to the variable conditions of island streams. Precise pH and hardness figures specific to this species are not well documented; the data here are sparse and should be read as the broad tropical-stream envelope rather than measured optima.
Feeding
Poecilia hispaniolana is an omnivore that grazes the productive shallow waters it lives in. FishBase places it at a low trophic level of about 2.6 — derived in part from its relatives — which points to a diet weighted toward plant and detrital material: algae, biofilm and diatoms scraped from surfaces, together with small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae taken from the streambed and water column. This generalist, low-on-the-food-chain feeding is typical of the mollies, which exploit the algal films and micro-invertebrates of warm, sunlit waters.
No feeding study specific to this species appears in the accessible literature, so the picture is assembled from its trophic level and the well-established habits of the genus. In practical terms it should behave as a typical molly: a near-constant grazer that takes a wide range of foods and benefits from a substantial share of vegetable matter in the diet. Aquarium-specific feeding notes for P. hispaniolana are effectively absent — it is rarely, if ever, kept in the hobby — and would follow standard molly husbandry rather than anything peculiar to the species.
Mating
Like all members of the genus, Poecilia hispaniolana reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male's gonopodium — the intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — is used to transfer sperm directly to the female, the defining reproductive innovation of the live-bearing poeciliids. Courtship and mating behaviour have not been documented in detail for this species specifically, but in mollies generally the smaller, more mobile males pursue females and attempt copulation, and females are able to store viable sperm internally, so that a single mating can fuel more than one successive brood.
No species-specific data on mate choice, courtship display or sperm storage in P. hispaniolana have been published, so any account of its mating must be framed as genus-typical rather than measured. What can be said with confidence is the mode: internal fertilisation via the gonopodium, with the female retaining and nourishing the embryos rather than depositing fertilised eggs.
Breeding
Poecilia hispaniolana is viviparous — a true livebearer — and, in keeping with the genus Poecilia, its mode is lecithotrophic ovoviviparity: the developing embryos are nourished by their own yolk reserves rather than by a placenta-like connection to the mother. This sets the mollies apart from poeciliids such as Heterandria and Poeciliopsis, which show placental matrotrophy and, in some cases, superfetation (carrying broods at different stages of development simultaneously). Superfetation is not documented in Poecilia, and there is no reason to expect it here; broods develop and are delivered as a single cohort.
No gestation length or brood-size figures have been published for P. hispaniolana itself — the reproductive data for this species are genuinely sparse. By the standard of its congeners, gestation runs on the order of three to five weeks and broods number in the tens of fully formed, free-swimming young, which are independent at birth. These genus-level expectations should be read as informed approximation, not as measurements taken from this fish; the responsible position is that brood size, gestation and reproductive timing remain undescribed for the species and await study.
In the aquarium
Poecilia hispaniolana is essentially a wild island endemic rather than an aquarium fish; it is not part of the ornamental trade and there is little to no published hobbyist husbandry for it. Anyone who did keep it — most plausibly a specialist livebearer enthusiast working with wild-type stock — would treat it as a typical small molly: a peaceful, active, shoaling fish of warm, well-oxygenated water, best kept in groups with the sexes balanced toward females to spread out male attention.
Given its natural habitat of warm shallow riffles, it would suit temperatures in roughly the 22 to 25 degree Celsius band, clean and gently flowing water, and the hard, alkaline chemistry that mollies generally favour. Its high resilience and fast reproduction suggest it would breed readily under good conditions, as mollies do, with fry needing cover from hungry adults. These notes are extrapolated from the genus and from the species' stream ecology rather than drawn from documented aquarium experience, which for this fish is effectively non-existent.
Conservation
Poecilia hispaniolana is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 11 May 2020. The rating reflects a fish that is reasonably widespread within its island range, occupies a common habitat type — shallow stream riffles — across both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and reproduces quickly enough to recover from disturbance, with a population doubling time under fifteen months.
As a single-island endemic, however, the species' fortunes are tied entirely to the freshwater systems of Hispaniola, an island under significant environmental pressure, particularly from deforestation and watershed degradation on the Haitian side. While the current Least Concern listing indicates no immediate threat at the species level, endemics confined to one island warrant ongoing attention, and the thinness of published ecological and demographic data for this fish means that any future decline could go unnoticed without targeted survey work.
