Poecilia hollandi is one of the small Brazilian livebearers of the subgenus Pamphorichthys — a group of diminutive, modestly coloured poeciliids native to the rivers of eastern Brazil. Rarely seen in the aquarium trade and overshadowed by its famous relatives the guppy and the mollies, it is a fish known mostly to ichthyologists working on the eastern-Brazilian drainages, where it inhabits the São Francisco and adjacent river basins. Like all members of the family it is a live-bearer, the female giving birth to free-swimming young after internal fertilisation, but much of its life history remains poorly documented.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia hollandi was described by Arthur Wilbur Henn in 1916. The species is placed in the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, within the subfamily Poeciliinae. In several taxonomic treatments it is assigned to the subgenus Pamphorichthys, a group of small-bodied Brazilian poeciliids; the name Pamphorichthys hollandi is widely used in the literature and databases, and FishBase catalogues the species under that combination. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority that governs the valid name, and the original authorship — Henn, 1916 — is given in parentheses, reflecting that the species has been moved between generic and subgeneric arrangements since its description.

The placement of hollandi within Poecilia subgenus Pamphorichthys reflects an ongoing revision of the small livebearers of eastern Brazil. Recent taxonomic work on this group — including the description of new Pamphorichthys species from the drainages of Bahia — continues to clarify the boundaries and relationships of these fishes, which are easily overlooked because of their small size and subdued coloration. The Pamphorichthys livebearers are among the smallest members of the family, and their taxonomy has historically been complicated by the morphological similarity of the species and the limited material available from some river systems.

The specific epithet honours Dr William Jacob Holland (1848–1932), a Jamaican-born American clergyman, entomologist and palaeontologist who served as director of the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. The common name Holland's Toothcarp follows directly from this eponym, "toothcarp" being a general term applied to the cyprinodontiform fishes.

Morphology

Poecilia hollandi is a very small livebearer. Published figures give a maximum length of about 1 in total length for males and unsexed fish, with females reaching roughly 2 in — the larger size of the female being typical of poeciliids, in which the sexes differ markedly in both size and form. The body is small, slender and laterally compressed, in keeping with the general build of the Pamphorichthys livebearers, which are among the most diminutive fishes in the family.

As in all poeciliids, the most diagnostic external feature is found in the male: the anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ used to transfer sperm to the female. Females retain a normal, fan-shaped anal fin and a deeper, fuller body, particularly when gravid. The coloration of the species is modest compared with the brightly patterned guppy; the small Brazilian Pamphorichthys livebearers are generally subdued in hue, and detailed descriptions of live coloration for hollandi are sparse in the accessible literature.

As with other small, peaceful livebearers, gentle tankmates and a calm, mature aquarium would be expected to suit it, and its small adult size means it needs little space.
