The Tiger Limia is a small, barred livebearer known from a single Caribbean lake. Described in 2020 from Lake Miragoane in south-western Haiti, Poecilia islai is one of the cluster of limias endemic to that one body of water on the island of Hispaniola — a slender, silvery fish whose males and females alike are crossed by bold black vertical bars. Originally placed in the genus Limia, it is treated by the Catalog of Fishes under Poecilia, and it carries the unenviable distinction of having been assessed as Critically Endangered almost as soon as it was named, threatened by the introduced fishes and habitat decline closing in on its only home.

Taxonomy & naming

Poecilia islai was described in 2020 by Rodolfo Rodriguez-Silva and Patrick F. Weaver, in the Journal of Fish Biology, from specimens collected at Lake Miragoane (Lac Miragoane) in south-western Haiti. The authors erected the species within the genus Limia, the New World livebearer group centred on the Greater Antilles, and the original combination is Limia islai. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — files the taxon under Poecilia, reflecting the long-running treatment of Limia as a synonym or subgenus of the larger genus Poecilia; FishBase and WoRMS likewise list the current valid combination as Poecilia islai. Both genus placements appear in the literature, and an aquarist may encounter the fish under either name.

The specific epithet honours Dominic Isla, an aquarist and dealer who ran CoCo Island Aquatics from 1975 to 2020 and who died before the species he helped bring to attention was formally evaluated. Within the barred group of Hispaniolan limias, P. islai is most similar to Limia nigrofasciata, sharing with it conspicuous black vertical bars on the body — but in P. islai the bars are present in both males and females and are darker, wider and more conspicuous than in L. nigrofasciata. The species belongs to the Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae.

Morphology

Poecilia islai is a small livebearer, reaching about 2.5 in in total length in the largest recorded specimens. The body is slender and laterally compressed, with the body depth roughly equal to the length of the caudal peduncle. The most distinctive feature is a series of black vertical bars running down both sides of the body, present in both sexes — a pattern that, together with the wider and darker bars, separates it from the otherwise similar Limia nigrofasciata and from all other congeners in the Limia group.

The sexes differ in fin placement and in the structure of the male's anal fin. In females the origin of the dorsal fin sits slightly posterior to the origin of the anal fin. In males the anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, the rod-like intromittent organ characteristic of poeciliids; in P. islai the gonopodium's fourth ray (ray 4p) bears about ten serrae, a diagnostic detail used in the original description. As a barred, silvery fish of modest size, the species is more subtly marked than the brightly spotted guppies of the same family, with its visual interest carried by the strong tiger-stripe banding that gives it its common name.

Habitat

The species is known only from its type locality: Lake Miragoane, a freshwater lake in south-western Haiti, on the island of Hispaniola. It was collected both within the lake itself and in a small clear-water channel exiting the north end of the lake. The fish favours habitats with submerged vegetation and muddy bottoms — the kind of structured, weedy shallow water that suits a small grazing livebearer.

Lake Miragoane is a centre of endemism for limias, and P. islai is sympatric with a striking concentration of related and other native fishes: Gambusia beebei, the cichlid Nandopsis haitiensis, and several other limias including Limia nigrofasciata, L. garnieri, L. miragoanensis and L. immaculata. Alongside these natives the lake now also holds introduced species — the cichlids Oreochromis aureus (blue tilapia) and Tilapia rendalli — whose presence is part of the conservation problem for the lake's endemic fauna. Because the entire known range of P. islai is this one lake and its immediate outflow, the species is a single-location endemic in the strictest sense.

Feeding

Direct diet data for Poecilia islai have not been recorded; FishBase carries no stomach-content or feeding study for the species and lists only a size-based estimate of trophic level (about 2.6), which points toward a largely omnivorous, low-trophic diet rather than predation on other fishes. On the available evidence the feeding ecology of this fish should be considered data-sparse.

What can be said is drawn from its habitat and its relatives. Small barred limias of vegetated, muddy-bottomed shallows of this kind are typically grazers and micro-omnivores, taking algae and biofilm (aufwuchs), detritus, and small aquatic invertebrates from plants and the substrate. In captivity, members of the Limia group accept the standard livebearer fare — good-quality flake and micro-pellets with a meaningful share of algal or vegetable matter, supplemented by small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp — but specific dietary requirements for P. islai itself have not been documented.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Poecilia islai reproduces by internal fertilisation rather than by spawning eggs into the water. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin; in this species the gonopodium carries about ten serrae on ray 4p. Males approach and court or pursue females, and once mating has occurred females of poeciliids can typically store sperm internally, allowing successive broods to develop from a single insemination.

The specific courtship behaviour of P. islai — whether males perform the kind of sigmoid display seen in many limias, and how strongly females exercise mate choice — has not been described in the cached literature, and should be treated as data-sparse. The strong vertical barring shared by both sexes is unusual within the group, since in many livebearers it is the males that carry the bolder ornament; what role, if any, the banding plays in signalling between the sexes in this species is not established.

Breeding

Poecilia islai is viviparous (livebearing), as are all members of the subfamily Poeciliinae. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with an estimated population doubling time of under fifteen months — consistent with the rapid, repeated reproduction typical of small livebearers.

Beyond this, the reproductive specifics are not on record. Gestation length, brood size, and whether the species shows superfetation (the carrying of several broods at different stages of development simultaneously, a phenomenon known in some Poecilia) are not reported in the cached sources, and no fecundity figures are populated on FishBase. Aquarists working with related Hispaniolan limias generally find them to be undemanding livebearers that breed readily in well-planted tanks and whose fry, born fully formed, need cover from being eaten by the adults — but extending those expectations to P. islai is an inference from its relatives rather than a documented account of this species.

In the aquarium

Poecilia islai has reached aquarists — its describer was an aquarium dealer, FishBase records the species' human use as commercial aquarium trade, and the fish exists in the hobby as a maintained livebearer rather than only as a museum specimen. As a small, peaceful, barred livebearer it would be kept much like other limias: in a planted aquarium with stable, hard, alkaline water, in a group, with attention to controlling the inevitable population growth that comes with a prolific livebearer.

Detailed husbandry parameters specific to P. islai are not documented in the cached material, so any temperature or chemistry numbers should be read as the general livebearer envelope rather than as measured requirements for this fish. There is, however, a conservation dimension to keeping it that sets it apart from a guppy: as a Critically Endangered single-lake endemic, captive-maintained stock has genuine ark value, and responsible keepers treat it as a conservation-grade fish — maintaining clean lines, avoiding hybridisation with the other barred limias it resembles, and never releasing it into local waters.

Conservation

Poecilia islai (assessed as Limia islai) is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 16 June 2020 and published in the IUCN 2021 update. The Critically Endangered listing is driven by the species' extremely small range — it is known from a single location, Lake Miragoane — combined with a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. The population trend is recorded as unknown, and the number of mature individuals has not been quantified.

The pressures on the lake are the familiar ones for an island endemic: introduced and invasive species, including the tilapias Oreochromis aureus and Tilapia rendalli now present in Lake Miragoane, together with degradation of the wetland habitat itself. Because every known individual of the species lives in this one lake, P. islai has no refuge population to fall back on, which is exactly what makes a single-location endemic so vulnerable. For this species the most valuable thing an aquarist can do is the opposite of releasing fish into the wild: maintain clean, well-documented captive lines as insurance against the loss of the wild population, and support the conservation of Lake Miragoane and its remarkable flock of endemic limias.
