Taxonomy & naming
Poecilia mandibularis was described in 2020 by Rodet Rodríguez-Silva, Patricia Torres-Pineda and James Josaphat in the journal Zootaxa (4768(3):395–404), from material collected at Lake Miragoâne in Haiti. The species was originally named Limia mandibularis, and it is still widely cited under that combination in the hobby and specialist literature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — treats Limia as a subgenus of Poecilia rather than a full genus, so the valid name carried here is Poecilia mandibularis. The World Register of Marine Species independently confirms the same authority and original description (AphiaID 1495470).
The family Poeciliidae unites the New World livebearers — guppies, mollies, limias, mosquitofishes and their relatives — small, internally fertilising toothcarps of the Cyprinodontiformes. The Limia lineage is centred on the Greater Antilles, and Hispaniola in particular hosts a remarkable concentration of endemic species. Lake Miragoâne alone is an epicentre of this radiation: before mandibularis was named, Hispaniola already hosted eighteen endemic Limia, and this species was reported as the ninth Limia endemic to the lake itself. The authors, working with Ingo Schlupp of the University of Oklahoma, suggested that divergence in jaw morphology and feeding ecology may help explain how so many closely related species coexist in one small lake.
The specific epithet refers directly to the fish's most diagnostic trait. "Mandibularis" derives from the Latin for jaw, referring to the well-developed lower jaw that distinguishes the species. The genus name Poecilia comes from the Greek poikilos, "with many colours" — a reference to the variegated patterning typical of the family rather than of this particular, rather plain, species.
Morphology
Poecilia mandibularis is a small, elongate livebearer. Reported standard lengths run from roughly 1.5 in, with FishBase giving a maximum of about 1.5 in SL in males or unsexed fish and 1.5 in SL in females. The body is relatively slender for a limia, with an oval cross-section, and the caudal fin is symmetrical and either truncate or slightly convex. Meristic counts reported in the description include around 11 dorsal soft rays, 7–8 anal soft rays, and roughly 13 predorsal scales.
The diagnostic feature is the mouth. The lower jaw is unusually well developed, built on an elongate anguloarticular bone, so that the supra-terminal mouth's jaw nearly forms a right angle with the lower edge of the eye when closed — a distinctive quadrato-mandibular joint that gives the species its name. Other technical diagnostic characters include the absence of preorbital and preopercular pores, with single preorbital and preopercular sensory canals that form open grooves rather than enclosed tubes. In females the dorsal-fin origin sits slightly behind the anal-fin origin, a useful point of separation from the similar Limia immaculata, in which the dorsal-fin origin lies directly above the anal.
In colour the fish is understated. The body in both sexes lacks crossbars, spots or blotches — the plain, unmarked pattern it shares most closely with L. immaculata. Live fish show a yellowish dorsal region with a darker snout and a darkened area above the opercula, grading to a silvery ventral surface. As in all poeciliids, the male is identifiable by the gonopodium, a rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays.
Habitat
Poecilia mandibularis is, on present knowledge, endemic to Lake Miragoâne on the Tiburon Peninsula of southern Haiti, on the island of Hispaniola. Despite being one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the Caribbean, Miragoâne is small in absolute terms — only about 7 mi (7.5 miles) long, with a surface area near 16 mi² (about 9 square miles). The lake appears to sit in an endorheic, or closed, drainage, and it is a renowned hotspot of Caribbean livebearer diversity, harbouring a flock of endemic Limia found nowhere else.
The type material was collected at the north bight of the lake over muddy bottoms with submerged and semi-submerged vegetation near the banks. The species has also been recorded from mountain springs feeding into the lake, in clear water with a slow current along the path exiting the lake, suggesting it ranges between the lake margins and its inflowing spring systems. Environmental measurements taken at the type locality in early June 2019 recorded a water temperature of 86 °F and a conductivity of 321 µS/cm.
The species is benthopelagic and tropical, living in warm fresh water near vegetated, soft-bottomed margins. It shares the lake with a striking assemblage of other livebearers and cichlids, including Gambusia beebei, the endemic limias Limia miragoanensis, L. immaculata, L. nigrofasciata, L. garnieri and L. islai, and the native cichlid Nandopsis haitiensis. Introduced tilapiine cichlids — Oreochromis aureus and a Tilapia species — are also present, an ecological complication for a fish confined to a single small lake.
Feeding
Direct dietary studies of Poecilia mandibularis have not been published, and the data here are sparse. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 2.7, consistent with a small omnivore that takes a mixture of plant and animal material rather than a strict predator. Like other small poeciliids of vegetated lake margins, it can reasonably be expected to graze on algae, biofilm, diatoms and detritus while taking small invertebrates and insect larvae from among the submerged plants.
The species' most distinctive feature — its enlarged, specialised lower jaw — strongly suggests some form of trophic specialisation. The describing authors explicitly raised the possibility that jaw morphology and food preference are linked, and that divergence in feeding ecology may be one of the mechanisms allowing so many Limia species to coexist in Lake Miragoâne. What that specialised jaw is actually used for in the wild, however, has not been documented, so any specific feeding mode remains a hypothesis rather than an observed fact.
In the absence of published aquarium data, no feeding regime can be stated with confidence for captive fish. By analogy with related limias it would be expected to accept the small flake, micro-pellet and live or frozen foods typical of the group, but this species is not established in the hobby and such notes would be inference rather than record.
Mating
Poecilia mandibularis reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive strategy of the Poeciliidae. The male carries a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which is used to transfer sperm directly to the female. As in other limias and guppies, courtship and copulation occur in open water rather than at a nest or territory, with males pursuing females rather than defending a fixed site.
No detailed behavioural study of courtship, male display, or mate choice in this particular species has been published, so the specifics of its mating system are not documented. The general poeciliid pattern — males competing for access to females, and the likelihood that females can store sperm internally to fertilise successive broods — can be expected by analogy with better-studied relatives, but should be read as inference from the family rather than as observed behaviour in P. mandibularis.
The plain, unmarked body of both sexes is notable in this context. Many poeciliids rely on bright male colour patterns in courtship, and the absence of such markings in this species — shared with its close relative L. immaculata — may reflect a different balance of selective pressures in the Miragoâne flock, though this has not been investigated directly.
Breeding
Like all members of the Limia lineage, Poecilia mandibularis is a livebearer: fertilisation is internal, the eggs develop and hatch inside the female, and she gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. This viviparous (functionally ovoviviparous) mode is the reproductive hallmark of the New World poeciliids and is well established for limias as a group, even where species-specific data are lacking.
For this species, the quantitative details that would normally accompany a breeding account — gestation length, brood size, frequency of broods, and whether superfetation (carrying multiple broods at different stages of development simultaneously) occurs — have not been reported in the literature. Superfetation is documented in some poeciliids but not in others, and there is no published record establishing whether it occurs in P. mandibularis, so it cannot be asserted here. The data are simply sparse for this recently described, narrowly endemic fish.
By the general pattern of small limias, newborn fry would be expected to emerge as miniature, independent fish able to swim and feed at once, with no parental care and a real risk of predation by adults. These are reasonable expectations from the group's biology rather than observations specific to this species, and the species is not known to be bred in captivity.
In the aquarium
Poecilia mandibularis is essentially a wild, scientifically described species rather than an aquarium fish. It was named only in 2020, is known from a single Haitian lake, and is not established in the ornamental trade; there is no body of published husbandry experience to draw on. Anything written about keeping it is therefore inference from its close relatives and from the conditions recorded at its type locality, not a record of aquarium practice.
What little can be said comes from the wild data. The fish lives in warm tropical fresh water — a temperature near 86 °F was recorded at the type locality — over soft, muddy bottoms with abundant submerged and marginal vegetation, at a moderate conductivity around 321 µS/cm. Any serious attempt to maintain it would aim to reproduce those conditions: warm, stable, well-vegetated water with soft substrate and gentle flow, and the small group sizes appropriate to a shoaling livebearer.
Given its extreme endemism and the presence of introduced predatory cichlids in its only known habitat, this is a species of conservation and scientific interest first, and any aquarium population would be most valuable as a managed, documented conservation effort rather than as a casual ornamental. It is not a beginner's fish, and at present it is not a hobby fish at all.
Conservation
Poecilia mandibularis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN. FishBase reports its Red List status as Not Evaluated, and no dedicated assessment page exists for the species; it was described in 2020 and has not yet been reviewed. Its CITES status is likewise Not Evaluated. In the absence of a formal assessment, no Red List category can be assigned here.
The biological circumstances of the species nonetheless point to genuine conservation concern. It is, on present evidence, endemic to a single small lake of roughly 16 mi² — an extreme of narrow range that leaves any species exposed to local disturbance, habitat alteration, or the collapse of a single population. Lake Miragoâne already hosts a tightly packed flock of endemic livebearers, several of them sharing the same restricted waters, which compounds the vulnerability of the whole assemblage.
The most concrete threat on record is biological. Introduced tilapiine cichlids — Oreochromis aureus and a Tilapia species — are established in the lake alongside the native fauna, and such introductions are a recurring driver of decline in small endemic livebearers elsewhere in the Caribbean. A formal IUCN assessment, basic population monitoring, and attention to the spread of introduced species in Lake Miragoâne would all be appropriate next steps for a fish so recently discovered and so narrowly confined.
