Poecilia montana was named by Donn Eric Rosen and Reeve Maclaren Bailey in their 1963 monograph on the poeciliid fishes — the foundational revision in which the genera Limia and Mollienesia were synonymised with Poecilia, consolidating the modern, broad concept of the genus. The species is placed in the subgenus Psychropoecilia, and in hobby and community contexts is sometimes cited in the full form Poecilia (Psychropoecilia) montana. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and treats Poecilia montana Rosen & Bailey, 1963 as the accepted combination within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers.
The genus name Poecilia derives from the Greek poikilos, meaning "with many colours" or "variegated," a reference to the patterning typical of these fishes; the epithet montana is Latin for "of the mountains," pointing to the upland or highland character of the habitats in which the species occurs on Hispaniola. The fish is known in English as the Hispaniola Molly, after the island to which it is restricted.
It is worth flagging a documented inconsistency in the secondary literature. FishBase lists Meyer and Radda (2000) as the main reference for this species, but that paper concerns a new Poecilia from Venezuela and is a genus-level citation rather than a study of montana itself — it should not be read as evidence of a South American range. The authoritative distribution for Poecilia montana is Hispaniola, and the apparent geographic mismatch is an artefact of how the reference was attached, not a real range extension.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Poecilia montana are sparse. FishBase records no maximum length, standard length, or total length for the species, and the size fields in its summary are blank, so any figure for adult size would be a guess rather than a measurement. The mollies of the genus Poecilia are characteristically lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by their own yolk reserves (ovoviviparity) rather than by a placenta-like maternal connection — and produce broods of dozens of fully formed free-swimming fry. No species-specific brood size or gestation length has been recorded for montana, so the exact numbers and timing are unknown.
As with other poeciliids, the newborn fry would be expected to emerge fully formed and able to swim and feed immediately, and like most livebearers the adults — including the mother — may predate the young, so cover or separation is the usual route to raising fry in captivity. These are general expectations from the molly lineage, however, and not observations specific to this species.

Any keeping notes can therefore only be inferred from the mollies as a group: a warm-water, omnivorous livebearer that benefits from stable, well-maintained conditions and a diet including vegetable matter. Mollies as a whole tend to appreciate hard, alkaline water, but whether montana shares the brackish tolerance seen in some Poecilia is not documented, so no specific water chemistry is asserted here. The species' High estimated resilience suggests it would breed readily in captivity if maintained, as most livebearers do.
The honest position is that this is a specialist's fish about which the hobby knows very little.
