Chromobotia macracanthus, the clown loach, is the most popular loach in the aquarium hobby and one of the most instructive — almost everything that makes a loach a loach is written on this fish. It is a bold, orange-and-black-banded botiid from the rivers of Borneo and Sumatra that grows far larger and lives far longer than most buyers expect, reaching around 12 in over a lifespan that can run to decades. It is obligate-social: a single clown loach is a stressed clown loach, but a group of five or more settles into a clicking, tumbling shoal with its own pecking order. Like its botiid kin it carries an erectile spine below the eye, is near-scaleless and so sensitive to medications, and — despite being sold by the million — is essentially never bred in home aquaria. The clown loaches in shops come from hormone-induced spawning on Southeast-Asian farms, not from tanks.

Taxonomy & naming

The clown loach was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852, originally in the genus Cobitis — hence the parentheses around his name. For a century and a half it was known to the hobby as Botia macracanthus, lumped into the broad catch-all genus Botia along with the yoyo, zebra and skunk loaches. In 2004 Maurice Kottelat separated it into its own monotypic genus, Chromobotia, on the strength of its distinctive colour pattern and anatomy, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — now lists it as Chromobotia macracanthus, the only species in the genus.

It belongs to the family Botiidae, the botiid loaches, the group that also holds Botia, Yasuhikotakia, Syncrossus, Sinibotia and Ambastaia. The old name lingers in the trade and in older books, so a fish sold as "Botia macracantha" is the same animal; the current combination is Chromobotia macracanthus.

Morphology

The clown loach is a stout, arch-backed loach with a pointed head and a deep, laterally compressed body. It is unmistakable: a bright orange to orange-red ground colour crossed by three broad black bands — one through the eye, one across the mid-body, and one at the base of the tail — with red-orange fins. Populations from Borneo and Sumatra differ subtly, the Bornean fish tending to blacker pelvic fins. Reported to reach about 12 in in total length, it is one of the largest fish in this section, though tank specimens grow slowly and many spend years at half that size.

Like other botiids it carries a sharp, erectile spine in a groove beneath each eye — the suborbital spine that gives the family its old name of "spined loaches." The fish can flick these spines out defensively; they readily snag a net and can nick a careless hand, so clown loaches are best moved in a container rather than lifted in mesh. The body is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin effectively naked to the touch — a point that matters greatly when it comes to disease and medication.

Habitat

Chromobotia macracanthus is native to the fresh waters of Sundaland — the islands of Borneo and Sumatra in Indonesia. It lives in rivers and their tributaries, moving seasonally: adults inhabit larger, flowing river channels for much of the year and migrate into flooded forest and smaller upstream waters to breed with the monsoon rains. The water is warm, soft and typically acidic to neutral, often stained with tannins and running over sand, leaf litter and submerged wood.

This is a strictly freshwater fish of warm lowland and foothill rivers — not a brackish or coldwater species. In the aquarium it wants warm, clean, well-oxygenated water with gentle to moderate flow, a soft substrate, and abundant cover in the form of wood, rock caves and shaded retreats, which mimic the structure of its home rivers and give a shoal the hiding places it needs to feel secure.

Feeding

The clown loach is an omnivore with a strong appetite for small invertebrates. In the wild it forages over the bottom for insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and molluscs, taking some plant matter and detritus as well. Its taste for snails is well known and genuinely useful: a group of clown loaches will steadily clear a tank of pest snails, crushing them with the pharyngeal teeth.

In the aquarium it is easy to feed and readily takes sinking pellets and wafers, frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and blackworm, and blanched vegetables. A varied diet keeps its colour and condition up. Because it is an active, growing, group-living fish, it needs to be fed generously enough that lower-ranking individuals get their share — and because it hunts partly by night, a feed after lights-out is appreciated.

Mating

Sexing clown loaches is difficult. There is little reliable external dimorphism; mature females tend to be plumper-bodied when in condition, and some keepers report subtle differences in the shape of the tail lobes, but the two sexes are otherwise very alike. This, combined with the fish's large adult size and long road to maturity, is part of why pairing and spawning them under aquarium conditions is so rarely achieved.

In nature, spawning is tied to the flood season: adults undertake upriver breeding migrations as the rivers rise, moving into shallower, faster tributary and floodplain water to reproduce. Recreating that seasonal cue — the changes in flow, temperature, water chemistry and volume that trigger migration and ripening — is beyond the reach of an ordinary home tank, which is the fundamental obstacle to breeding the species domestically.

Breeding

The clown loach is, for practical purposes, not bred in home aquaria. It is an egg-scattering species with no parental care: ripe fish release eggs into flowing water, the eggs and larvae drift, and the adults take no further part. The combination of large adult size, difficulty in sexing, slow maturation and the need for a strong seasonal migratory trigger means that verified home spawnings are vanishingly rare.

The clown loaches that fill the world's shops are produced commercially, chiefly on farms in Indonesia, using hormone induction — brood fish are injected to bring them into spawning condition and stripped or spawned under controlled conditions, and the fry are reared in ponds. This is the honest breeding picture for the species: it is farmed at scale by professionals with hormones and infrastructure, not tank-spawned by hobbyists. A keeper should buy clown loaches expecting to enjoy them, not to breed them.

In the aquarium

The clown loach is a rewarding but demanding long-term fish, and most of the ways it is kept badly come down to three mistakes. The first is buying too few: it is obligate-social, and kept singly or in pairs it becomes withdrawn, skittish or a bully. It needs a group of at least five, ideally more, where it forms a hierarchy, shoals and tumbles, and "clicks" audibly when content or feeding — a genuine sound made with the pharyngeal teeth. The second is underestimating its size and lifespan: this is a 12 in fish that lives for many years and, as a growing shoal, ultimately needs a large tank measured in hundreds of litres, not a community aquarium.

The third is medicating it like an ordinary fish. Being near-scaleless, the clown loach absorbs treatments readily and is sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so half-doses and careful, gentle products are the rule. At the same time it is notably prone to ich and is often the first fish in a tank to break out in white spots, so it must be watched closely and treated cautiously. Give it warm, clean, well-filtered water with strong oxygenation, soft substrate, plenty of cover and a proper-sized shoal, and it is a hardy, characterful, decades-long companion; skimp on any of those and it declines.

Conservation

Chromobotia macracanthus has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List, so it carries no conservation category here; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a status. It remains widespread and common in its native Borneo and Sumatra, and it is one of the most heavily traded ornamental fishes in the world.

The trade in clown loaches has historically drawn on both wild-caught juveniles and farmed stock. The rise of large-scale hormone-induced farm production has added a captive-bred supply, which in principle can relieve some collecting pressure, though wild-caught fish still enter the trade. As with much of Sundaland's freshwater fauna, the broader long-term risks are habitat-driven — deforestation, drainage of peat swamp and river alteration across Borneo and Sumatra — rather than any documented collapse from the aquarium trade. There is no current evidence of a trade-driven decline in this abundant and widely-farmed species.
