Ellopostoma mystax was described by Tan and Lim in 2002 and placed in the monotypic (or near-monotypic) genus Ellopostoma, family Ellopostomatidae. The family is one of the smallest and least-studied in the superfamily Cobitoidea — the broad assemblage that includes the more familiar botiid, nemacheilid and cobitid loaches — and its placement within that superfamily has been revised with advancing molecular data.
So little information has been published on the species that its full synonymy, distribution and internal variation remain poorly documented. It does not appear in the major hobbyist databases (FishBase, SeriouslyFish, Loaches Online) with a complete entry, reflecting how rarely it reaches the trade or specialist review. Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Ellopostoma mystax are sparse in the accessible literature. As an ellopostomatid, it is expected to share the general plan of the Cobitoidea: an elongate, somewhat depressed body suited to life in fast-flowing water, small eyes, and sensory barbels around the mouth adapted for foraging over the substrate.
The skin is largely scaleless or bears deeply embedded, reduced scales — a characteristic of many loach lineages that renders the fish sensitive to copper-based and other hard chemical treatments. Habitat

Water temperature in upland Bornean streams ranges broadly with elevation; for this species the available data suggest a cool-to-moderate range of approximately 64–72 °F, well below the warm still water assumed for many tropical aquarium fish. pH is likely soft and near-neutral to mildly acidic. The species is not known from lowland rivers, brackish reaches or disturbed habitats.
Feeding
Stream loaches of the Cobitoidea are broadly micro-invertivores: they forage over the substrate for small insect larvae, worms, microcrustaceans and other benthic invertebrates, supplemented by biofilm, algae and fine organic matter. Ellopostoma mystax is assumed to follow this pattern, consistent with its stream-adapted morphology and the ecological character of its habitat.
In the aquarium, small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, tubifex — are the appropriate core diet. Sinking micro-pellets may be accepted once the fish is established. Flake food is not appropriate as a staple for a current-adapted micro-invertivore of this type. The fish should be kept and appreciated for its own sake, with no expectation of reproduction.

Ellopostoma mystax is an extreme rarity in the trade and has no established husbandry record. What can be reasoned from its biology and natural habitat is this: it is a cool-water, high-oxygen stream fish that will not thrive in a warm, still community tank. A dedicated species or biotope setup with vigorous filtration and circulation, a temperature held toward the low end of the tropical range (around 68–72 °F), and a substrate of fine gravel and smooth rock is the appropriate starting point.
Because the skin is likely near-scaleless in the manner of most Cobitoidea, caution with copper-based medications and full-strength treatments is warranted. The species is assumed to be a benthic micro-invertivore that needs small live or frozen foods; acceptance of prepared foods cannot be assumed. Tank size should accommodate adequate current and territory; no figure is given here because adult size has not been confirmed in accessible sources.
