Taxonomy & naming
Ellopostoma megalomycter was described by the French zoologist Léon Vaillant in 1902, based on material from the Kapuas River of Borneo. The parentheses around his name in the authority citation follow the convention that the species has since been placed in a genus other than the one Vaillant originally used — the fish was later moved into Ellopostoma and placed in its own family, Ellopostomatidae, separating it from the broader Cobitoidea assemblage.
Ellostomatidae is treated as a monotypic or near-monotypic family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Cobitoidea has undergone substantial taxonomic reshuffling since the 1990s — familiar genera such as Botia and Acanthophthalmus have been split, renamed and redistributed — and Ellopostomatidae itself represents one of the more isolated lineages within the superfamily. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is followed here as the authority for the valid combination Ellopostoma megalomycter (Vaillant, 1902). The type locality is the Kapuas River, Borneo.
The epithet megalomycter derives from Greek: mega (large) and mycter (nostril), meaning 'large-nostrilled' — a reference to the prominent nasal openings that apparently distinguish this genus.
Morphology
Ellopostoma megalomycter is a small, elongated loach reported to reach approximately 2 in standard length (SL). It is a demersal, bottom-dwelling fish adapted to swift-flowing stream conditions. Like other members of Cobitoidea, it possesses a suborbital spine — an erectile defensive spine beneath the eye — and the skin is effectively near-scaleless, with tiny, deeply embedded scales that give the body a smooth, unprotected feel. This scaleless quality has direct implications for how the fish responds to medications and water chemistry.
Beyond size and its stream-adapted body form, detailed published morphological data for this species are sparse in accessible sources. The genus name's allusion to large nasal openings suggests a distinctive facial profile, but photographs and comparative anatomical studies of live specimens are not widely available in the hobbyist or popular ichthyological literature.
Habitat
Ellopostoma megalomycter is a stream endemic of Sundaland. Its documented range spans the Kapuas River system of West Kalimantan, Indonesia (western Borneo) and Peninsular Malaysia — a narrow geographic footprint that reflects its status as a restricted-range species. It inhabits the bottom of swift-flowing freshwater streams, where it forages over the substrate as a demersal micro-feeder.
The swift, clear streams of Sundaland are typically well-oxygenated and cool relative to still lowland water, with substrates of sand, gravel and leaf litter. Specific temperature and pH data for this species have not been published in sources available at the time of writing; however, its swift-water ecology suggests cool, oxygen-rich, clear conditions rather than the warm, still, tannin-stained blackwater associated with forest pools or peat swamps.
Feeding

Loaches are rarely bred in home aquaria under the best of circumstances; the obstacles include the need for seasonal cues (flood pulses, temperature shifts, changes in flow rate), difficulty in sexing the fish, and in many species the necessity of hormone induction to bring brood fish into condition. For a data-sparse stream endemic of this kind, a keeper should not expect breeding and should not find accounts claiming otherwise reliable. The correct statement is that breeding is not recorded for this species.
In the aquarium
Ellopostoma megalomycter is not a species available in the aquarium trade, and it has no established keeping record. If encountered — as a wild-collected specimen, an import or a zoo/research fish — the keeper should look to its ecology for guidance. It is a swift-water stream species, so the aquarium should provide strong, well-oxygenated flow over a substrate of fine sand or gravel with some smooth stones and leaf litter to mimic its natural streambed. Still or sluggish water is inappropriate.
As with all near-scaleless loaches, sensitivity to copper-based medications and to full therapeutic doses of many standard treatments must be assumed. Half-doses and careful, loach-safe products are the rule if disease treatment is needed. Its maximum size of approximately 2 in SL means it is a genuinely small fish, but because its care requirements and behaviour in aquaria are undocumented, any keeper would be working without a reliable guide. The species warrants caution, respect for its stream-adapted physiology, and a willingness to observe and record — it is more of a scientific specimen than a standard display fish.

The pressures on Sundaland's freshwater stream fauna are well established: deforestation, land conversion for palm oil and timber, sedimentation and altered hydrology from upland clearing, and increasing extraction of water from smaller catchments. Swift, clear streams of the kind this species inhabits are among the most vulnerable freshwater habitats in the region, because they are highly sensitive to any input of fine sediment or agricultural runoff that destroys the clean gravel and cobble substrates small stream-adapted fish depend on.
Because E. megalomycter has essentially no presence in the aquarium trade, commercial collecting is not a documented pressure; the threat is purely habitat-based.
