Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis megaspila was described by Theodor Nalbant in 1993 from 38 specimens collected in the Danube delta — the Caraorman channel — and from the Gurban valley roughly 17 mi south of Bucharest, Romania. The name combines the Greek megas, "big," with spilos/spila, "spot," referring to the prominent jet-black blotch at the upper base of the caudal fin that distinguishes it in the original description.
Its standing as a valid species has been questioned ever since. Subsequent work on the genus Cobitis in the Danube basin treats C. megaspila as a junior synonym of Cobitis elongatoides Băcescu & Mayer, 1969, the widespread Danubian spined loach, and notes that gynogenetic diploid and triploid hybrids between C. elongatoides and C. megaspila-type fish occur commonly where the two co-occur — a pattern typical of the genus Cobitis, which is notorious for hybridization and unisexual hybrid lineages across Europe. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for valid names; pending that resolution the name is retained here as described, under the genus Cobitis, family Cobitidae — the spined loaches.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis megaspila carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile spine housed in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out defensively when handled or threatened. Like its relatives it is a slender, elongated, sand-coloured loach with a row of dark blotches along the flank and, in this species' original description, a notably large black spot at the base of the tail fin — the feature its name calls out.
Specific size data for C. megaspila itself is sparse in the literature; the closely related and much better-studied Cobitis taenia reaches roughly 4.5 in total length, and similar figures are typical across small Eurasian Cobitis species. The skin is thin and the scales are minute and deeply embedded, leaving the fish effectively naked and, as in all true loaches, sensitive to harsh treatments.
Habitat
This is a coldwater, temperate European fish, not a tropical one — a distinction that matters for anyone trying to place it in an aquarium context. Its known range sits in the Danube basin, with records from Romania, Moldova and Bulgaria, and its type locality is a channel of the Danube delta plus a tributary valley near Bucharest. Cobitis as a genus favours clear, oxygen-rich water — flowing brooks and rivers as well as still backwaters — over sand and gravel bottoms, and the genus as a whole thrives at cool-to-moderate temperatures around 57–64 °F rather than the warm water tropical loaches need.
Like other spined loaches, it is a bottom-dwelling sand-sifter, spending much of its time buried or partly buried in soft substrate and emerging to forage, which makes a fine, diggable sand bed a functional necessity rather than decoration.
Feeding
Cobitis megaspila is a carnivorous benthic omnivore that feeds by sifting sand and fine gravel for small prey. Across the genus, chironomid (non-biting midge) larvae are the dominant food item, supplemented by small crustaceans, molluscs, other insect larvae and some algae and detritus picked up in the process.
It needs a soft, sand-sifting substrate to forage naturally rather than a bare or coarse-gravel floor; without one, this feeding behaviour simply cannot happen. Any theoretical aquarium diet would need to replicate that — small sinking live or frozen invertebrate foods worked into a soft sand bed — rather than relying on food left on hard surfaces.
Mating
Direct observations of courtship in C. megaspila are not available in the sources consulted here, and given the unresolved taxonomic overlap with C. elongatoides, most reproductive data for the group comes from the better-studied Cobitis taenia. In that species and its relatives, spawning is a temperate, seasonal event, occurring in spring and early summer as water temperatures rise, and fish undergo portion spawning — releasing eggs in multiple small batches over the season rather than a single event.
Spawning in the genus is triggered once water temperature climbs from a minimum of roughly 61–64 °F into a preferred range of 68–79 °F, with actual spawning documented around 72 °F. This coldwater seasonal cue — not a warm, static tropical trigger — is characteristic of the whole spined-loach group in temperate Europe.
Breeding
Cobitis megaspila scatters adhesive eggs among aquatic plants, typical of the genus, with no parental care given to eggs or fry once released. This places it firmly among the temperate spined and pond loaches whose breeding biology differs sharply from their tropical relatives: several other cool-water Cobitidae — species in Cobitis and Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been successfully spawned in ponds or cool tanks, while the tropical Cobitidae such as the horseface loach Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys generally have not.
There is no record in the sources here of C. megaspila itself having been bred in captivity; what data exists comes from the wider Cobitis taenia group, where laboratory spawning has been achieved under cool-water conditions (roughly pH 7.0–7.5, spawning temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s °C). Given the taxonomic uncertainty around this name and its near-total absence from the hobby, the honest picture is that this species is not a fish anyone has documented breeding in a home aquarium.
In the aquarium
Cobitis megaspila is not an aquarium trade fish — it does not appear to be kept or offered commercially, and the sources available give no aquarium-care record for it specifically. What can be said comes from its place in the genus: as a temperate, coldwater Cobitis it would need cool, well-oxygenated, clear water rather than a heated tropical setup, and — like every true loach — a soft, sand-sifting substrate to forage and burrow in naturally.
Being a near-scaleless true loach, it would share the group's general sensitivity to copper-based and full-strength medications, a point that applies broadly across Cobitidae regardless of species. Anyone considering keeping Cobitis species from the Danube basin should treat them as unheated or coolwater fish, closer in requirements to a temperate pond than a tropical community tank.
Conservation
Cobitis megaspila has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. Its conservation picture is complicated by the taxonomic question mark hanging over the name itself: because current work treats it as a probable synonym of, or hybrid population with, Cobitis elongatoides rather than a clearly distinct species, it has never been assessed independently, and any future assessment would need to resolve that identity question first.
Its known range is narrow — the Danube delta and a nearby tributary valley in Romania, with further records from Moldova and Bulgaria — which would typically warrant caution regardless of the taxonomic outcome. As with many small Danube-basin fishes, habitat pressures on the wider Cobitis elongatoides / megaspila complex would stem from river regulation, dredging and wetland loss in the Danube system rather than from any aquarium trade, since the species is not traded.
