Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis splendens was described in 1998 by Erk'akan, Atalay-Ekmekçi and Nalbant, one of four new Cobitis species named from Turkey in that paper as ichthyologists worked to untangle the region's spined-loach complex. The genus Cobitis is the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined loaches proper — and the Catalog of Fishes, the authority followed here for valid names, lists splendens as a valid species within it.
