Taxonomy & naming
Lepidocephalichthys furcatus was described by Lieven de Beaufort in 1933. It has also circulated in the older literature under the combination Lepidocephalus furcatus, a now-outdated genus name that was folded into the current Lepidocephalichthys as the group's taxonomy was revised; a Cobitidae revision of the genus (formerly treated as Lepidocephalus) confirms the redescription and notes that close relatives such as L. thermalis and L. guntea were likewise once shuffled through the catch-all genus Cobitis before settling into Lepidocephalichthys — the kind of nomenclatural drift that is common across this family.
The species sits in the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches, distinguished from the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra) by build and by the shape and use of the suborbital spine. The genus name is retained here as Lepidocephalichthys per current usage; no valid-name change is indicated in the sources consulted.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach — Seriously Fish gives a standard length of roughly 1.5–2 in, and FishBase records a maximum around 2 in SL with common adults closer to 1.5 in, making it one of the more diminutive Cobitidae in the trade. Like other true loaches it carries an erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye, used defensively and easily felt (or occasionally caught) when the fish is handled, and its skin is effectively naked — scales are present but tiny and deeply embedded, leaving it with the thin, permeable covering typical of the family.
Sexual dimorphism is present and distinctive for the genus: males develop an enlarged pectoral fin with a thickened lamina circularis along rays seven and eight, a structural feature used to distinguish the sexes, while females grow larger and heavier-bodied overall. This is a tropical species, not one of the family's temperate, coldwater representatives.
Habitat
Lepidocephalichthys furcatus is native to the Malay Peninsula, with its type locality at Bukit Merah lake in Perak, Peninsular Malaysia, and a broader range extending through Malaysia, southern Thailand and North Sumatra; FishBase also notes it from the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins. It occupies swamps, river margins, shallow lakes and reservoirs thick with dense aquatic vegetation — still or slow lowland wetland water rather than fast-flowing streams.
Water in these habitats runs warm and soft, with Seriously Fish citing a temperature range of roughly 73–79 °F and a soft, acidic pH of about 5.5–7.5. As a lowland wetland fish that can tolerate periods of low dissolved oxygen, it is a facultative air-breather, an adaptation shared with several other swamp-dwelling loaches and gouramis it shares habitat with. This is unambiguously a tropical species, not a coldwater one.
Feeding
This is a sand-sifting benthic micropredator. In the wild it forages through soft substrate, sifting material past the gills to extract insect larvae and small crustaceans, spending much of its time partly or fully buried with only its eyes exposed. It is not a grazer of algae or biofilm but an active hunter of small invertebrates living in and on the substrate.
In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking prepared foods alongside live and frozen fare such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm. A soft sand substrate is essential for natural feeding behaviour — without it the fish cannot express its normal sifting habit, and offering food only at the surface will likely be missed by a fish that spends much of the day buried.
Mating
No specific courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for this species in the sources consulted. What is established is the mechanism for identifying ripe or breeding-condition males: the pectoral-fin lamina circularis on rays seven and eight becomes more pronounced, and females are noticeably larger and heavier-bodied when carrying eggs. Beyond that structural dimorphism, FishBase records no specific captive breeding accounts, and Seriously Fish notes no confirmed captive spawnings — the species is presumed, by analogy with related lowland Cobitidae, to be a seasonal spawner tied to its swampy, vegetation-rich habitat, but this has not been directly documented in aquaria.
Breeding
Lepidocephalichthys furcatus is, like most tropical members of the family Cobitidae, essentially unbred in home aquaria — there are no confirmed captive spawning records in the sources reviewed here. As a Cobitidae species it would be expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care, releasing adhesive eggs among vegetation, but this pattern has not been directly verified for the species itself. This contrasts with several of the family's temperate representatives — spined loaches in the genus Cobitis and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — which have been pond- or tank-spawned in cooler water; the warm-water, swamp-dwelling L. furcatus has not been reported to follow suit. Keepers should not expect to breed this species and should treat any captive reproduction as noteworthy rather than routine.
In the aquarium
This is a peaceful, retiring loach that does best kept with its own kind — both Seriously Fish and Loaches Online describe it as sociable with conspecifics and recommend groups of four or more, alongside gentle mid-water tankmates such as Trichopodus, Trichogaster, Trichopsis and Danio species that will not compete for its bottom-dwelling niche or intimidate it. A soft, fine sand substrate is non-negotiable, since the fish spends much of its time buried and needs material it can sift and burrow through without abrading its near-scaleless skin.
Being scaleless like other true loaches, it is sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many medications, so any dosing should be conservative. Dense planting, subdued lighting and soft, warm, slightly acidic water reflecting its swampy native habitat will keep this small, unshowy species settled — it is a fish for keepers who want a substrate specialist and interesting burrowing behaviour rather than a display centrepiece.
Conservation
Lepidocephalichthys furcatus is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, with FishBase citing an assessment date of August 9, 2019. It occupies a fairly broad range of lowland wetland habitats across the Malay Peninsula and into southern Thailand and North Sumatra, and there is no indication in the sources consulted of a population decline or significant trade pressure driving conservation concern.
As with many small, unglamorous swamp-dwelling loaches, this species is not a headline aquarium fish, and specific data on collection volumes or trade impact were not found in the cache. The main long-term pressure on its lowland wetland, swamp and vegetated-lake habitat across the region is likely to be the general habitat loss and drainage affecting Southeast Asian wetlands broadly, rather than any documented aquarium-trade-specific threat.
