Taxonomy & naming
Pangio filinaris was described in 1993 by Maurice Kottelat and K. K. P. Lim from material collected in the Sungai Tersat, a tributary of the Sungai Terengganu in the Terengganu state of Peninsular Malaysia. The species name filinaris derives from the Latin filum (thread) and naris (nostril), likely referring to the elongate nasal barbel or a feature of the nostril region. It belongs to the family Cobitidae — the true loaches — and to the genus Pangio, which contains the kuhli loaches and their allies across South and Southeast Asia.
The kuhli loaches have a tangled nomenclatural history. Many species that are now assigned to Pangio were formerly placed in the genus Acantophthalmus (and often misspelled Acanthophthalmus), and that old name still appears in older trade literature and on fish-store labels. The Catalog of Fishes, the international authority for valid fish names, places this species firmly in Pangio filinaris Kottelat & Lim, 1993, the combination used here.
Morphology
Pangio filinaris is a slender, cylindrical loach — more thread-like than most of its genus, which may account for the species epithet. Adults reach about 2 in standard length, with studied specimens typically around 1.5 in; it is one of the smaller kuhli loaches. The body is laterally compressed toward the tail, with a pointed snout bearing several pairs of short barbels. Ground colour and pattern are variable but generally feature a pale or yellowish base with darker irregular banding or mottling along the flanks.
The skin is effectively naked: kuhli loaches have only very small, deeply embedded scales, giving the body a smooth, almost slimy feel and exposing the fish to any chemicals dissolved in the water. The eye is small and partly covered by skin. Like other members of the family Cobitidae it possesses a suborbital spine — a small, erectile bifurcated spine that lies in a groove beneath the eye and can be extended as a defence; this spine can readily snag a net and is worth being aware of when handling the fish.
Habitat
This species is known from the Pahang and Terengganu river basins in Peninsular Malaysia, with the type locality being the Sungai Tersat tributary of the Sungai Terengganu. It is a fish of sheltered freshwater forest streams — typically shaded, low-gradient waters running over fine sand and leaf litter, with gentle flow and soft, acidic to near-neutral water. Temperatures in its native range span roughly 70–79 °F, and pH tends toward the soft-acidic end of the spectrum.
Pangio filinaris is not a fish of open or disturbed water. It belongs to the intact lowland forest stream environment that is increasingly threatened across Peninsular Malaysia by land conversion and drainage. In such habitats it hides under leaves, among root masses and in the substrate, emerging mainly at night to forage.
Feeding
Pangio filinaris is a micro-omnivore and substrate-sifter that works the bottom in search of small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and similar organisms. It is not a surface feeder and will rarely rise for floating food. In captivity it accepts sinking pellets and granules as a staple, with small live or frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, Daphnia, Cyclops, Artemia nauplii and bloodworm offered as supplements.
Feeding this species adequately requires attention. It is nocturnal, and in a community tank with faster, bolder tankmates it may receive little or no food during daylight hours. The most reliable practice is to feed a portion of sinking food at or just after lights-out, when the loach is active and competition is reduced. Underfed kuhlis waste away gradually and the problem is seldom obvious until the fish is already in poor condition.
Mating
Almost nothing is documented about the mating behaviour of Pangio filinaris specifically. As in other kuhli loaches, females are likely to be distinguishable from males when gravid — heavier-bodied and visibly distended with eggs, with the enlarged ovaries sometimes visible through the body wall. FishBase notes that females of this species are heavier and slightly larger than males, suggesting some degree of sexual size dimorphism.
Breeding cues in kuhli loaches appear to be linked to seasonal changes — rises in water level, temperature shifts, or softer rainfall-diluted water — that accompany the onset of the monsoon across their range. Replicating these triggers in a home aquarium is difficult, and documented captive spawnings are essentially absent from the literature for this species.
Breeding
Pangio filinaris has not been bred in captivity based on any documented report. As a kuhli loach it is understood to be an egg-scatterer: in the wild, ripe fish are believed to scatter small, greenish adhesive eggs among floating plant roots or fine vegetation near the water surface, with no parental care thereafter. This reproductive strategy, typical of the kuhli-group, leaves the eggs and larvae to develop unattended.
The fish reaching the trade are almost certainly wild-collected rather than captive-raised. For the keeper, breeding should not be expected; the honest aquarium outlook for this species is that spawning may be triggered by a significant water change with cooler, very soft water in a well-planted tank, but success remains undocumented. Providing excellent care and a stable, suitable environment is worthwhile on its own terms, regardless of any breeding outcome.
In the aquarium
Pangio filinaris is a peaceful, undemanding fish for a soft-water community — provided its specific needs are met. The single most important requirement is the substrate: fine, smooth, ideally rounded sand that the fish can burrow into and sift through. Sharp gravel or coarse substrate abrades the scaleless belly and damages the barbels; smooth sand is non-negotiable. Deep leaf litter, floating plants, and shaded retreats such as small caves, pipes or densely planted areas give it the security it needs to emerge at dusk.
It should be kept in a group — at least three individuals, preferably more — as solitary kuhlis are reclusive and prone to stress. Water must be soft and slightly acidic (pH 5.0–7.0), warm (75–79 °F), with gentle filtration that does not create strong turbulence. Like all scaleless or near-scaleless loaches it is unusually sensitive to copper and to full therapeutic doses of most medications; if disease treatment is necessary, half-doses and copper-free products are strongly advised. It is, however, prone to external parasites such as ich, so the tank and its tankmates should be monitored carefully. The suborbital spine means nets are best avoided; catch this fish with a plastic container or cup.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pangio filinaris as Least Concern (LC), assessed in December 2018. While it is a range-restricted species confined to two river systems on the Malay Peninsula — the Pahang and Terengganu basins — it was considered sufficiently widespread and without immediate major threats to warrant this lower-risk category at the time of assessment.
Nonetheless, its native lowland forest-stream habitats in Peninsular Malaysia are subject to ongoing pressure from deforestation, agricultural run-off, and drainage works. As a small, ground-dwelling fish dependent on intact, shaded streams with fine substrates and clean soft water, it is vulnerable to the habitat degradation that accompanies land conversion. Fish reaching the trade are likely wild-collected, and the scale of collection relative to wild populations is not well documented. Continued monitoring of stream habitats in Terengganu and Pahang, where both the species and much of the forest cover are found, is warranted.
