Taxonomy & naming
Pangio doriae was described by the Italian ichthyologist Alberto Perugia in 1892, originally as Eucirrhichthys doriae — hence the parentheses around his name in the current combination. Eucirrhichthys was a short-lived genus later synonymised with Pangio (Blyth, 1860), and the Catalog of Fishes now lists this species as Pangio doriae (Perugia, 1892), family Cobitidae, the true loaches. GBIF carries the same combination.
Pangio is the kuhli-loach genus of Southeast Asia, encompassing around 30 or more species of slender, eel-like burrowers. The group has undergone taxonomic revision over the years — several species once placed in the genus Acanthophthalmus (a trade name still heard for the common kuhli, P. kuhlii) were moved into Pangio — and new species continue to be described from Sundaland's forest-stream systems. P. doriae is one of the larger members of the genus, reaching sizes reported up to about 3.5–4.5 in total length depending on the source.
Morphology
Like all kuhli loaches, Pangio doriae is elongate and highly laterally compressed toward the tail, giving the fish an eel-like silhouette. The body is nearly cylindrical at the head end, tapering to a thin caudal peduncle, and covered in very small, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin feeling smooth and almost naked to the touch. The mouth is subterminal and fringed with three pairs of barbels used to probe the substrate. Beneath each eye sits a bifurcate suborbital spine — erectile and capable of being locked outward — that can snag nets and serves as a defensive structure.
Colouration in this species tends to be pale pink to yellowish-orange, often with irregular darker banding or mottling along the flanks; natural colour variants, including pinkish or lightly patterned individuals, have been noted across its range in Sundaland. FishBase records a maximum total length of 3.5 in for males and unsexed fish, while loaches.com notes individuals up to around 4.5 in in trade reports, making it a noticeably larger kuhli than the familiar P. kuhlii.
Habitat
Pangio doriae is a lowland species of Sundaland — the biogeographic region encompassing the Malay Peninsula and the large islands of Borneo and Sumatra in Malaysia and Indonesia. It inhabits shallow, slow-moving or still forest streams, swamp margins, and peat-swamp drainage channels, where it shelters in soft sandy or silty bottoms beneath layers of fallen leaves and submerged organic debris. The water is warm, soft, and typically acidic, often tinted brown with humic acids from surrounding vegetation.
This is not a fish of fast-flowing mountain streams or deep river channels; it is a wetland and lowland peat-area specialist, found where current is gentle and the substrate is yielding enough to burrow into. Light penetration is low, canopy cover is dense, and the habitat is structurally complex — thick leaf litter, tangled roots, and woody debris provide the hiding places this species depends on day and night.
Feeding
Pangio doriae is a micro-omnivore and substrate-sifter that forages after dark. In the wild it works through soft bottom sediment and leaf litter in search of small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, and other invertebrate prey — along with any organic detritus it encounters. It is not a surface or mid-water feeder and will ignore floating flake food entirely.
In the aquarium, Doria's loach should be offered sinking foods placed after lights-out, when it becomes active: small sinking pellets and wafers, frozen or live mosquito larvae, daphnia, tubifex, and bloodworm all work well. Underfeeding is a common mistake with kuhli loaches in mixed community tanks — the fish feed nocturnally and are outcompeted by faster, diurnal species if food is only provided during the day. A dedicated late-evening feed ensures this species receives adequate nutrition.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Pangio doriae is minimal and poorly documented. As in most kuhli loaches, mature females in breeding condition are typically more full-bodied than males, and some keepers report a visible greenish tinge to the ovaries visible through the abdominal wall of ripe females, but there are no reliable external differences between the sexes outside of spawning condition. This makes deliberate pairing difficult even for experienced keepers.
In the wild, breeding in this and related kuhli loaches is likely tied to seasonal changes in water level, temperature, and chemistry associated with monsoon rains — cues that are difficult to replicate in a static home aquarium. The species naturally inhabits lowland swamp and forest-stream systems where water levels fluctuate significantly with the seasons, and this environmental variation probably drives gonadal development and spawning behaviour.
Breeding
Pangio doriae has not been reliably bred in home aquaria. As with most kuhli loaches, the species is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: ripe fish reportedly deposit small, greenish, adhesive eggs among floating plant roots or fine-leaved aquatic vegetation at or near the water surface, and the adults take no further interest in the spawn. The eggs and larvae receive no guarding or brooding.
Verified accounts of successful spawning in aquariums are very rare for any Pangio species, and specific accounts for P. doriae are essentially absent from the aquarium literature. The trade is largely supplied by wild-collected fish from their native range in Malaysia and Indonesia. A keeper should purchase this species to observe and enjoy it, not with realistic expectations of breeding it.
In the aquarium
Pangio doriae needs a setup designed around its biology, not retrofitted from a generic community tank. The single most important feature is the substrate: fine, soft sand deep enough — at least 2 in — for the fish to fully bury itself. Sharp gravel or coarse substrate damages the delicate skin and the barbels, and a fish denied the ability to burrow is a stressed fish. The tank should be heavily planted or otherwise furnished with plenty of cover — driftwood, leaves, rocky caves — and lit dimly or with a shaded section, since this is a nocturnal species that retreats from bright light.
Kuhli loaches are social and should be kept in a group of at least five; singly or in pairs they become secretive and rarely emerge. Even in a group they are shy and may vanish for days at a time — this is normal behaviour, not a sign of illness. As near-scaleless fish they are sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many aquarium treatments, yet they are prone to ich and should be monitored closely; treat at half-dose with a scaleless-fish-safe product. Tankmates should be peaceful and small enough not to bully or outcompete Doria's loach at feeding time. Water should be warm (75–81 °F), soft, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6–7), with gentle filtration and low to moderate flow.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pangio doriae as Least Concern (LC), indicating that the species is not currently considered at elevated risk of extinction across its Sundaland range. It occurs in Malaysia and Indonesia (Borneo and Sumatra) and is associated with lowland wetland and peat-swamp habitats, which are among the most threatened freshwater environments in Southeast Asia.
The broader concern for this and many similar Sundaland loaches is habitat loss: lowland peat swamps and slow-moving forest streams across Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula have been heavily impacted by drainage, conversion to oil-palm and pulpwood plantation, peat fires, and waterway modification. While P. doriae is not flagged as threatened at present, species tied to intact lowland peat habitats are inherently vulnerable to the continued transformation of Sundaland's landscape. The aquarium trade draws on wild-collected specimens, and responsible sourcing from areas with managed extraction is preferable where it can be confirmed.
