Pangio cuneovirgata is a small, eel-shaped kuhli loach from the peat swamps and shaded forest streams of the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and western Java — a near-scaleless, nocturnal burrower that reaches about 1.5 in in standard length and spends its days buried in soft substrate or wedged beneath leaf litter. It is rarely seen in the trade and even more rarely bred, yet it is an appealing fish for a specialist blackwater setup: gentle, social, and a vivid argument for the kind of careful, slow husbandry that the best loach keeping demands.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio cuneovirgata was described by S. N. Raut in 1957, which is why the authority appears in parentheses — a convention indicating that the species was originally placed in a different genus. It was long carried in the trade and in older literature under the genus Acanthophthalmus, the name widely used for kuhli-type loaches until Kottelat revised the group in 1990 and re-established the earlier genus Pangio (van Hasselt, 1823), to which the Catalog of Fishes — the governing authority for valid names — now assigns it. Any older reference to Acanthophthalmus cuneovirgatus refers to the same fish.

Pangio belongs to the family Cobitidae (the true loaches), and within it to the kuhli loach assemblage — a cluster of slender, banded, semi-burrowing species centred on the Sunda region. The species epithet cuneovirgata is Latin for 'wedge-striped', describing the angled or tapered dark markings along the flank.

Morphology

Pangio cuneovirgata is a slender, almost cylindrical loach with a slightly flattened underside and a pointed snout ringed by three pairs of barbels. Most individuals fall between 35 and 1.5 in standard length; some sources cite an upper limit of around 2.5 in, but the typical traded and wild-caught fish is smaller. The body is pale to yellowish with a series of dark, wedge-shaped or oblique bars along the flanks — the pattern that gives the species its name and separates it from the more uniformly banded kuhli (Pangio kuhlii) and semi-kuhli (Pangio semicincta).

Like other kuhlis, P. cuneovirgata carries a small, sharp bifid suborbital spine below each eye. This spine is barely visible and usually no concern to the keeper, but it can catch in fine-mesh nets. The skin is effectively scaleless — the scales are tiny, deeply embedded and not visible to the naked eye — which is the loach character that matters most for medication, since the fish absorbs chemicals through its skin far more readily than an ordinary scaled species.

Habitat

In the wild, Pangio cuneovirgata inhabits shallow, slow-moving to near-still forest streams, swamps, ditches and peat-swamp backwaters across its range: southern Thailand (Narathiwat province), Peninsular Malaysia (Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor — the type locality is Johor state), Sumatra (Riau and Jambi provinces) and western Java. These are characteristically blackwater or near-blackwater environments: water coloured amber or brown by humic acids from decaying leaf litter and peat, with extremely soft, acidic chemistry and almost no dissolved minerals. The substrate is fine organic mud, peat or sand covered in leaf litter; the water is shaded by dense overhead canopy and moves slowly if at all.

Temperatures run on the cooler end of the tropical range — typically 70–79 °F — rather than the higher values of many Southeast Asian aquarium fish. The pH can be as low as 3.5 in true peat swamp, though the practical aquarium target is 5.5–6.5. This combination of soft, slightly acidic, warm-but-not-hot, shaded water over a fine, organically rich bed is the profile to aim for in the tank.

Pangio cuneovirgata is noted as a facultative air-breather (as are many cobitids), able to supplement gill breathing with gut respiration in poorly oxygenated swamp water — a useful adaptation to its low-flow, humic habitat.

Feeding

Pangio cuneovirgata is a micro-omnivore and substrate-sifter. In its natural blackwater streams and peat swamps it works through the sediment and leaf litter at night, picking up small insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, worms and organic detritus. It is not a surface or mid-water feeder under ordinary conditions.

In the aquarium the key is sinking food delivered at or after lights-out, since this species is largely nocturnal and will often remain hidden through the day. Suitable foods include small sinking pellets or micro-wafers, live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-bloodworm (chironomid larvae) and Tubifex. Variety matters: a diet restricted to one food leads to nutritional gaps in a small fish with high surface-area-to-volume ratio. Keepers frequently underfeed kuhli loaches simply because the fish are invisible during the day and appear at feeding time only briefly after dark; dropping food in at lights-out is the reliable solution.

Mating

Virtually nothing is published on courtship or mating behaviour in Pangio cuneovirgata specifically. In kuhli loaches as a group, spawning appears to be prompted by a combination of rising water level, changes in water chemistry associated with rainfall, and the presence of floating vegetation or surface plant roots — stimuli that correspond to the onset of the wet season in their native habitat. The fish are thought to scatter adhesive greenish eggs among fine floating plant material near the surface, though direct observation is rare and the details for this species are unstudied.

Sexing is difficult. Mature females are noticeably plumper through the abdomen when gravid, and the greenish eggs can sometimes be seen through the body wall in very ripe individuals — but outside of breeding condition the two sexes are near-identical in external appearance. Maintaining a group of six or more individuals improves the likelihood that both sexes are represented.

Breeding

Pangio cuneovirgata has not been recorded as breeding in captivity according to available sources; spawning in the broader kuhli group is very rarely achieved in home aquaria. When kuhli loaches do spawn, they are egg-scatterers with no parental care: ripe fish scatter small, adhesive, greenish eggs among floating plant roots or fine-leaved surface vegetation such as Hydrocotyle or Java moss positioned near the surface, then take no further interest in them. The eggs and emerging larvae are small and easily overlooked, and the fry require microscopic live food — infusoria and rotifers — in their earliest days.

Conditions that reportedly help trigger spawning attempts in the kuhli group include a soft, aged, slightly acidic water with abundant floating plant cover, a gradual rise in water level simulating seasonal rain, and a small water change with slightly cooler, soft water to mimic the onset of the wet season. Even with these measures, verified spawnings in P. cuneovirgata remain undocumented in the literature. Any fish in the trade should be assumed wild-collected.

In the aquarium

Pangio cuneovirgata thrives best in a specialist blackwater or soft-water setup rather than a hard-water community tank. The minimum requirement is a fine, smooth substrate — soft sand or very fine rounded gravel — into which the fish can burrow; sharp substrate damages the scaleless skin and causes abrasion injury. Leaf litter (dried Indian almond or oak leaves) laid over the sand replicates the natural environment, provides daytime hiding, and slowly acidifies the water. Low to moderate, indirect lighting suits the species; cover from floating plants or overhanging décor is valued. Flow should be gentle: a slow, soft circulation, not a strong current.

Keep a group of at least six individuals. Kuhli loaches are social and stressed when isolated; a group settles into natural behaviour — burrowing together, emerging as a cluster at feeding time — whereas a solitary fish tends to hide permanently and may stop feeding. The species mixes well with other small, peaceful soft-water fish: small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, dwarf otocinclus, and similar community fish whose needs overlap.

The near-scaleless skin is the critical husbandry note: Pangio cuneovirgata absorbs medications, particularly copper-based treatments, directly through its skin, making it highly sensitive to standard-dose medications. If the tank needs treating for ich or other disease, use half the stated dose or a copper-free alternative, dose gradually, and monitor carefully. Ironically, loaches are often the first fish to show ich in a community tank — something to watch for closely. Maintain good water quality through regular small water changes with soft, dechlorinated water matched to the tank's temperature and chemistry; avoid sudden parameter swings in what is a small, chemically sensitive fish.

Conservation

Pangio cuneovirgata is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2019 assessment). The species occurs across a broad stretch of the Thai-Malay Peninsula and parts of the Sunda islands and is associated with lowland peat swamp and forest stream habitats rather than a single narrow locality. However, the IUCN assessment notes that data are sparse and that further research on population trends, distribution and harvest levels is recommended — so the LC rating reflects reasonable range breadth rather than comprehensive monitoring.

The wider concern for this and related kuhli species is habitat loss. Peat swamp forests in Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra are among the most rapidly converted ecosystems in Southeast Asia, drained and cleared for oil palm and pulp-wood plantation at a rate that has no precedent in the region's history. The slow, soft, acidic, organically rich streams and backwaters that P. cuneovirgata depends on are a product of intact peat swamp; once the swamp is drained and the canopy removed, the hydrology and chemistry change permanently. The aquarium trade draws on wild-collected specimens, and while collection pressure on a small, range-wide loach is unlikely to drive population-level decline, habitat conversion at the catchment scale is a documented and continuing threat to the peat-swamp fish fauna of Sundaland.
