Taxonomy & naming
Misgurnus amamianus was formally described by Nakajima & Hashiguchi in 2022, in Zootaxa 5162(5):525–540, on the basis of specimens including 27 paratypes collected from the Amami island group in Japan's Ryukyu chain — the type locality. It belongs to the genus Misgurnus, the weather or pond loaches, within the family Cobitidae, the true loaches. The description separated it from its congeners on both morphological grounds and mitochondrial DNA sequence data, indicating it is a genetically distinct, geographically isolated lineage rather than a population of a more widespread Misgurnus species.
The genus Misgurnus itself has a long taxonomic history of regional splitting, with the familiar dojo or weather loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) long treated as a single wide-ranging East Asian species that recent work has shown to be a complex of narrower, more local species — M. amamianus is a product of that ongoing revision. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current valid combination; as a 2022 description it has not accumulated synonyms, and its placement in Misgurnus and family Cobitidae is not in question here.
Morphology
Misgurnus amamianus is a true loach in every diagnostic sense: it carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family Cobitidae its common name of spined loaches, folded into a groove beneath the eye and flicked out defensively, and its skin is effectively naked to the touch, covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales. This near-scaleless build is shared across the family and matters directly for keeping the fish, since it leaves the skin unusually exposed to medications and to skin- and gill-feeding parasites.
The formal description singles out sexual dimorphism in adult males: the lamina circularis, a modified structure at the base of the pectoral fin, is distinctively poleaxe-shaped in males of this species, distinguishing it from related Misgurnus. The last dorsal fin ray is unbranched and less than half the length of the second branched soft ray, one of the meristic characters used to separate it from congeners. Beyond these diagnostic points the description is a taxonomic paper rather than a natural-history account, so a fuller picture of adult size, colouration variability and growth is not yet available in the literature.
Habitat
Misgurnus amamianus is known only from the Amami island group in Japan's Ryukyu Islands, a chain of subtropical-to-warm-temperate islands strung between Kyūshū and Okinawa. The type series was collected there, and the species is currently treated as endemic to this small archipelago rather than part of the broader mainland-Asian weather loach complex.
As with other Misgurnus, this is a coolwater fish rather than a tropical one, despite its relatively low latitude — the Ryukyus sit at the warm, southern edge of the genus's coolwater distribution. Weather loaches of this genus are characteristically bottom-dwellers of slow, soft-bottomed fresh waters — rice paddies, ditches, ponds, and the sluggish reaches of streams — burrowing into mud or fine sediment and tolerating low-oxygen conditions by gulping air at the surface, a trait typical of the genus though not specifically documented for this species.
Feeding
No diet-specific data has been published for Misgurnus amamianus; the description is a taxonomic paper and does not address ecology. What can be said follows from the genus: Misgurnus loaches are benthic, sand- and mud-sifting omnivores, working through soft sediment for worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, along with organic detritus, and a soft substrate that permits this natural foraging and burrowing behaviour is important to their wellbeing.
In the absence of species-specific feeding data, a keeper should assume M. amamianus follows this same pattern and provide a fine, soft substrate plus a varied diet of sinking foods — the safest approach until more is published specifically on this species.
Mating
The 2022 description documents sexual dimorphism in adult males — a distinctively poleaxe-shaped lamina circularis at the base of the pectoral fin, a structure used across Misgurnus and related genera to distinguish males from females — but does not report on courtship, spawning behaviour, or breeding condition in this species. No field or aquarium observations of reproduction have been published.
For context, other Misgurnus species, including the well-studied dojo loach (M. anguillicaudatus), are known to scatter adhesive eggs among aquatic plants in spring, typically triggered by rising temperatures and photoperiod, with no parental care afterward. Whether M. amamianus follows the same pattern has not been documented; this is inferred from the genus, not established for the species itself.
Breeding
There is no published record of Misgurnus amamianus being bred, in the wild or in captivity — data on its reproduction is currently sparse to nonexistent, and this should be stated plainly rather than filled in with genus assumptions. What is established for temperate Misgurnus generally is a useful, honestly-labelled benchmark: the dojo loach and several other cool-temperate members of the genus scatter adhesive eggs among plants in spring and have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, unlike many of the family's tropical members, which are rarely or never bred at home.
Given that M. amamianus is a newly described (2022), narrow-range endemic with essentially no published ecological data, a prospective keeper should not expect established breeding protocols. Any spawning attempt would be experimental, informed by dojo-loach practice — a mature planted setup, seasonal cooling followed by a spring temperature rise, and adhesive eggs scattered with no parental care — rather than by anything documented for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Misgurnus amamianus is not established in the aquarium trade and has no dedicated care literature; anything offered here is inferred cautiously from the genus rather than reported for the species. As a Misgurnus, it should be treated as a coolwater to cool-temperate fish, not a tropical one — an unheated or lightly warmed setup is more appropriate than a standard tropical community tank, and sustained warmth above the genus's comfortable range is a stress factor to avoid.
A soft, fine substrate for natural sifting and burrowing, gentle to moderate flow, and good filtration over a low-oxygen-tolerant setup would follow general Misgurnus husbandry. As with all Cobitidae, the near-scaleless skin means sensitivity to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so any treatment should start conservative. Given the species' recent description and narrow known range, keepers should not expect it to be available in the trade, and any specimens that do appear should be treated with particular care given how little is documented about its needs.
Conservation
Misgurnus amamianus has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List. It was described only in 2022, which alone would place most new species outside the assessment backlog, and its known range — the Amami island group — is small, on the order of a limited archipelago rather than a continental river system. That narrow, endemic distribution is the kind of profile that often attracts conservation attention once formally assessed, but no such assessment exists yet.
No information is available on population trend, habitat pressures, or trade status for this species; it does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade. Given the small footprint of its known range on Amami, habitat changes to the island's freshwater and paddy-adjacent waterways would be the most plausible pressure to watch for, but this is a reasonable inference rather than a documented finding — the honest status here is data-deficient in all but name, formally Not Evaluated.
