Taxonomy & naming
Misgurnus anguillicaudatus was first described by the British naturalist Theodore Edward Cantor in 1842, originally placed in a different genus — hence the parentheses around his name in the current combination. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, which is grouped with the botiids, hillstream loaches and stone loaches in the superfamily Cobitoidea. The Catalog of Fishes recognises Misgurnus anguillicaudatus as the valid name for the East Asian dojo loach, distinguishing it from its European counterpart Misgurnus fossilis, the European weather loach, which is a separate species.
The genus Misgurnus sits within Cobitidae alongside pond and spined loach genera such as Cobitis and Sabanejewia. It should not be confused with the botiid loaches (Botia, Chromobotia, Yasuhikotakia) or the hillstream loaches (Gastromyzon, Sewellia), which belong to entirely different families. In the aquarium trade the species circulates under several names depending on geography: "weather loach" dominates in Europe, "dojo loach" in North America, and "pond loach" appears across both regions. All refer to the same animal. GBIF records the distribution as East Asia: China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, with the type locality consistent with temperate East Asian origin. The name Cobitis haematopterus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
The dojo loach is immediately distinctive: a long, cylindrical, eel-like body that tapers toward both ends, with a small downward-pointing mouth surrounded by ten barbels — three pairs on the upper lip and one pair at the corners — used for probing the substrate. The ground colour is olive-brown to yellowish-tan, often with a dark mid-lateral stripe and fine mottling along the flanks; the underside is pale. Specimens bred commercially may be noticeably paler than wild fish. A leucistic (golden) form, commonly sold as the "gold dojo" or "golden weather loach," appears regularly in the trade.
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 11 in, with a typical common length of around 6 in TL — most tank specimens settle around 6–8 in. Females grow slightly larger and are noticeably heavier-bodied when mature; this is the most reliable external sex indicator. Like all cobitids, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus carries a sharp, erectile suborbital spine below each eye. The body is effectively near-scaleless to the touch, the tiny scales deeply embedded in the skin, which has important implications for medication sensitivity. The species is also known to engage in intestinal respiration, absorbing oxygen through the gut when water oxygen levels fall — a remarkable adaptation to warm, still, deoxygenated water such as rice paddies, which allows it to tolerate conditions fatal to most fish.
Habitat
Misgurnus anguillicaudatus is native to temperate East Asia, found across a wide latitudinal and altitudinal range in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. It inhabits a remarkable diversity of still and slow-moving waters: river backwaters, irrigation canals, ponds, marshes, flooded rice paddies and lakes, typically over soft, muddy or silty beds where it can burrow. It is emphatically a lowland fish of calm or sluggish water, not a fast-flowing stream species.
This is a coldwater to cool-temperate species. Wild populations experience water temperatures ranging from near freezing in winter to around 77 °F at peak summer, and the fish burrows into substrate mud during severe cold or drought. It is definitively not a tropical fish: the optimal captive range of 59–77 °F reflects its natural thermal biology, and keeping it in a warm tropical community tank shortens its life significantly — aquarium care sources note that while it tolerates up to about 77 °F, prolonged exposure to tropical temperatures (82 °F+) is detrimental. The species has become a significant freshwater invasive outside its native range, with established feral populations in Australia, parts of Europe and the United States, a testament to its toughness and tolerance.
Feeding
The dojo loach is a benthic omnivore that feeds largely by sifting soft substrate, using its ten barbels to detect and excavate food items buried in mud or sand. In the wild its diet spans insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, molluscs, organic detritus and plant material — essentially whatever the bottom offers. The intestinal respiration adaptation that helps it survive in low-oxygen conditions also gives it a competitive advantage in the still, oxygen-poor paddies and ponds it often inhabits, where competitors cannot persist.
In the aquarium it accepts sinking pellets and wafers readily, and relishes frozen and live foods: bloodworm, blackworms, earthworms, daphnia and brine shrimp. Providing a soft sand substrate is important not only for its wellbeing but for natural feeding behaviour — a fish on coarse gravel or bare glass cannot sift and forage properly, and sharp-edged substrate damages the delicate barbels and skin over time. A dojo fed only surface or mid-water foods will often compete adequately, but it is noticeably more active and settled when it can root through fine sand as nature intended.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Misgurnus anguillicaudatus is subtle. Females are the larger and heavier sex, becoming distinctly plump in the belly when gravid; males are slimmer and slightly smaller on average. The second pectoral fin ray is thickened in males in some populations, a difference noted in the literature but not easy to assess in a community tank. Beyond these clues, the sexes are otherwise very similar in appearance, and distinguishing individuals reliably requires the fish to be in breeding condition.
In nature, spawning is tied to seasonal cues: the rise of water temperature in spring, increasing photoperiod and, in some regions, monsoon flooding. Fish aggregate in shallow, vegetated margins when conditions prompt reproductive readiness. The male pursues the female, wrapping his body around hers during the spawning act — a behaviour reported in both wild and captive breeding attempts. The fish do not form lasting pair bonds, and multiple males may attend a single female.
Breeding
Home aquarium breeding of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus is uncommon but not unknown, making it one of the relatively few loaches that hobbyists have occasionally succeeded in spawning domestically — a reflection of its temperate biology. Triggering breeding requires a pronounced seasonal temperature cue: fish must experience several months of cool water (around 50–59 °F or lower) followed by a gradual warming into the upper teens and early twenties, mimicking the progression from winter through spring. This seasonal conditioning, combined with an increase in photoperiod, signals readiness to spawn.
The species is an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Ripe females release adhesive eggs among aquatic plants or fine-leaved vegetation, which the males fertilise; a single spawning can involve up to roughly 50 eggs, with larger, older females producing more. The adults must be removed after spawning as they will consume the eggs without hesitation. Eggs hatch within a few days at appropriate temperatures. In aquaculture, the species is spawned using a combination of seasonal cue management and, when needed, hormone induction — the same hormone-assisted approach used for many cobitid and other loach species that are difficult to reproduce purely on natural cues in captivity.
In the aquarium
The dojo loach is one of the most characterful temperate fish available to hobbyists, and the single most important thing to get right is temperature. This is a coldwater or cool-water fish that belongs in an unheated or lightly chilled tank, not in a tropical community. An optimal aquarium range of 59–77 °F keeps it healthy for its full potential lifespan of up to ten years; sustained temperatures above 82 °F shorten the fish's life significantly — aquarium care sources are consistent that tropical conditions cause early mortality. A dojo loach in a tropical tank with discus or rams is a fish on borrowed time.
Beyond temperature, the requirements are straightforward: a soft, fine sand substrate for natural burrowing and foraging behaviour; a secure, tightly fitted lid (these fish are strong, agile escape artists); a group of three or more, since they are social and settle better in company; and plenty of cover such as flat stones, PVC tubes or bushy plants under which to shelter and rest. A standard aquarium of 35.5 in or more suits a small group of adults.
Because the skin is near-scaleless, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus absorbs chemical treatments readily and is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many common aquarium drugs. When disease treatment is required, half-doses and copper-free formulations are the safe approach. The species is genuinely hardy in appropriate conditions but is not well-suited to the temperature and medication regime of a typical tropical community — a point frequently overlooked at point of sale. The weather-forecasting behaviour for which it is named — increased frantic activity as atmospheric pressure drops before a storm — is real and observable, and is one of the endearing quirks that make it a rewarding long-term fish for keepers who give it the cool water it needs.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Misgurnus anguillicaudatus as Least Concern, reflecting its wide native distribution across East Asia and its extraordinary adaptability to degraded, low-oxygen and disturbed water bodies. It is abundant in rice-cultivation landscapes across China, Japan and Korea, and its tolerance for poor water quality and temperature extremes gives it resilience that specialist stream endemics lack.
The species presents a more complex conservation picture than most: while it is not threatened in its native range, it has become an established invasive in Australia, parts of continental Europe and the United States, where escaped or released aquarium and food-fish stocks have founded feral populations. In those contexts it is considered an ecological concern, capable of outcompeting native bottom-feeders and disturbing sediments. In the aquarium trade, stock is sourced from a combination of Asian aquaculture operations and wild collection; the commercially farmed supply is substantial, and the species is not considered to be under collection pressure. The gap between its invasive success outside its range and its stable native-range status makes it a useful case study in how a fish's resilience can cut both ways.
