The species epithet buphoensis follows the standard Latin place-name pattern, "-ensis" meaning "of, from" — so buphoensis means "of Bupo," naming the type locality directly.
It sits in the genus Misgurnus, within the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches — the group that also contains the temperate Eurasian genera Cobitis and Sabanejewia. Misgurnus is best known through the widely kept and widely studied dojo or weather loach, M. anguillicaudatus, and the largely coldwater East Asian and European species around it.
