Misgurnus fossilis, the weather loach, is the classic cold-water member of the true loach family Cobitidae — a long, eel-like burrower from the ponds, ditches and slow rivers of Europe that has nothing to do with the warm, planted tanks most loaches are kept in. It carries the erectile suborbital spine that defines the family, tolerates water from near-freezing to warm summer temperatures, and earns its common name from a genuine folk belief that its restlessness signals a change in barometric pressure. It is one of the few loaches in this section that has actually been spawned by hobbyists, provided it gets the cold winter rest it needs to trigger a spring breeding response.

Taxonomy & naming

Misgurnus fossilis was one of the many fish species described by Carl Linnaeus in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae in 1758, placed originally in the genus Cobitis alongside most of Europe's other spined loaches. It was later moved to Misgurnus, the genus of the weather and dojo loaches, where the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — still places it today as the type species of the genus.

It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true or spined loaches, distinguished from the botiid and stone loaches by an erectile spine beneath the eye and a generally elongated, near-scaleless body. The species epithet fossilis ("fossil-like, buried") refers not to any fossil record but to the fish's habit of burying itself in mud and surviving buried in drying pond bottoms — the same trait that gave rise to its English common name, since burrowed fish were said to become restless and surface just before a storm.

Morphology

The weather loach has the long, cylindrical, almost eel-like body typical of Misgurnus, tapering to a rounded tail and covered in very small, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin looking and feeling naked. FishBase records a maximum length of about 12 in total length in males and slightly more, around 12 in, in females, with most wild and aquarium fish seen closer to 6 in; individuals mature at around 4.5 in. Coloration is a mottled yellow-brown to olive over the back, fading to a paler, often orange-tinged belly, broken by fine dark speckling and stripes along the flanks — camouflage suited to a muddy, weedy bottom rather than the bold banding of its tropical botiid relatives.

Like other Cobitidae it carries an erectile suborbital spine in a groove below the eye, used defensively and capable of snagging in a net, plus several pairs of long, sensitive barbels around the mouth that it uses to feel out food in soft sediment. The near-scaleless skin that comes with this family is worth remembering when it comes to disease and medication.

Habitat

The weather loach is native to fresh water across Europe north of the Alps, from the Meuse basin in the west across the Rhine, Elbe, Danube and other drainages to the Neva basin in the east, with populations reaching into the northern Black Sea and Caspian Sea basins. It is a fish of still and slow-flowing water — ponds, ditches, oxbow lakes, canals and the quiet backwaters of larger rivers — over soft mud or sand bottoms, often among dense vegetation.

This is a temperate, cold-water species, not a tropical one: FishBase gives it a tolerance range of roughly 39–77 °F, and it is a classic burrower, digging itself 8–12 in into a soft bottom by day (reportedly to as much as 27.5 in under natural conditions) and emerging to forage mainly at night. It can also survive in poorly oxygenated water by gulping air at the surface and absorbing oxygen through its gut, an adaptation shared with its Asian relative the dojo loach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus.

Feeding

Misgurnus fossilis is an opportunistic, sand- and mud-sifting benthic omnivore. Diet studies summarized from wild populations record it taking copepods, cladocerans, ostracods, oligochaete worms, the aquatic isopod Asellus aquaticus, chironomid (midge) larvae, beetle larvae, small gastropods and detritus — essentially whatever small invertebrate life and organic matter its barbels find in the substrate, used as an opportunistic scavenger rather than a specialist hunter.

In the aquarium it is an easy and undemanding feeder, taking flake and sinking pellets readily along with frozen mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and earthworms. A soft substrate it can actually root through with its barbels matters more to how naturally it feeds than any particular food item — a bare-bottom or coarse-gravel tank denies it the foraging behaviour it is built for.

Mating

Spawning in Misgurnus fossilis is a spring event, triggered in the wild by rising water temperatures after winter. Loaches Online describes the courtship as the male wrapping around the female to help expel the eggs, a common Cobitidae spawning posture, after which adhesive eggs are scattered over plants rather than deposited in a nest. There is no strong external sexual dimorphism reported beyond females tending to run heavier-bodied when gravid.

Because the spawning trigger is seasonal and temperature-driven, successful aquarium breeding depends on giving the fish a genuine cold rest first — Loaches Online notes that captive spawning attempts benefit from overwintering the fish at around 39 °F (39°F) before warming them back up in spring. Skip the cold period and the fish generally will not condition for breeding, regardless of how the rest of the tank is set up.

Breeding

The weather loach is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: ripe adults release adhesive eggs among aquatic plants in spring and take no further part once spawning is finished. This puts it in useful contrast with most of the loaches in this atlas — where botiids are essentially never bred at home and rely on hormone-induced farm production, Misgurnus fossilis is one of the true, cold-water Cobitidae that hobbyists have genuinely pond- or tank-spawned, alongside some Cobitis and Sabanejewia species, precisely because its breeding cue is a manageable temperature cycle rather than a monsoon flood migration.

That said, deliberate captive breeding is still a minority pursuit even for this species; most weather loaches in the trade are wild-collected or pond-farmed rather than raised from home-tank spawns. A keeper wanting to try needs a proper winter chill-down to around 39 °F, a slow spring warm-up, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops for the adhesive eggs, and separation of adults from eggs and fry, since neither guards nor tends its own offspring.

In the aquarium

The single most important thing to get right with this species is temperature: it is a cold-water fish, comfortable at 50–72 °F and tolerant of a much wider 39–77 °F range, and does not want to be kept warm alongside tropical tankmates — an unheated tank or an outdoor pond suits it far better than a heated community setup. Loaches Online recommends medium-hard water in a pH range of about 7.0–8.0, up to 25 dH, which is a notably different chemistry target from the soft, acidic water tropical loaches prefer.

It is social and does best in a group of five or more, is a highly active nocturnal digger that needs a soft, diggable substrate rather than sharp gravel, and appreciates driftwood, plants and other refuges to retreat into by day. Being a strongly burrowing fish it can uproot lightly anchored plants, and being an air-gulper it should always have unobstructed access to the surface. As with other Cobitidae, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments, so gentler, reduced-dose approaches are the safer default.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Misgurnus fossilis as Least Concern (assessed January 2023), reflecting its wide range across European and western Asian drainages and generally stable overall numbers. That global rating masks real regional concern, however: the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service notes that the species is protected under Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC), and several national and regional Red Lists across Europe flag declining or fragmented populations, with low genetic diversity raising concern for some isolated stocks.

The pressures are the familiar ones for a wetland and floodplain specialist: drainage of ponds and ditches, canalisation of rivers, and loss of the still, vegetated backwaters it depends on. It is not a heavily traded ornamental species on the scale of the clown loach, so aquarium demand is not considered a meaningful driver of its conservation status; habitat loss across its European range is the more relevant long-term pressure.
