Neogastromyzon crassiobex is a small, torpedo-flat hillstream loach from the fast, clear, oxygen-rich hill streams of Peninsular Malaysia, where it clings to smooth rock faces in the current and rasps biofilm with a sucker-like underside. Described by Heok Hee Tan in 2006, it belongs to the Balitoridae — the torrent loaches — and shares with its relatives a body so dorsoventrally flattened that it reads almost like a freshwater limpet. It is a rheophilic specialist in the strictest sense: it needs cool, racing water, high dissolved oxygen, and a mature rockscape coated in algae and diatoms; without those conditions it starves or asphyxiates with quiet efficiency. No common trade name has established itself for this species, and it is only occasionally seen in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Neogastromyzon crassiobex was formally described by the Malaysian ichthyologist Heok Hee Tan in 2006. The genus Neogastromyzon was established by Tan in 1995 for a group of small, dorsoventrally flattened balitorid loaches endemic to Peninsular Malaysia and surrounding parts of the Thai-Malay Peninsula. The genus name means 'new belly-sucker' — a reference to the expanded, sucker-like ventral surface shared by all members. The species epithet crassiobex derives from Latin: crassus (thick) and obex (obstacle, barrier), most likely alluding to the thickened or reinforced rostral structures used to cling against strong current, or possibly to the obstructed, fast-falling stream habitats the species occupies.

The family Balitoridae has been rearranged repeatedly as molecular and morphological analyses have refined the Cobitoidea. Neogastromyzon sits firmly within the hillstream loach lineage and is accepted in its current combination by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names. No synonyms or earlier name combinations are on record for this species.

Morphology

Like all Neogastromyzon, N. crassiobex is extremely flattened from top to bottom — a body plan convergent with that of gobies and algae-eating catfish but wholly independent in origin. The head is broad and depressed, the pectoral and pelvic fins spread horizontally and together form a ventral suction disc that anchors the fish to smooth rock in powerful current. The species reaches approximately 2.5 in in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of its genus.

The skin is near-scaleless, with tiny embedded scales that give little protection against medications. A bifid rostral cap overhangs the mouth, which is directed downward and equipped for rasping rather than gaping — the tool set of a biofilm grazer, not a predator. Colouration is typically cryptic: the dorsal surface is mottled brown and cream in a pattern that breaks up the outline against rock, while the ventral surface is pale. The caudal fin is forked, providing thrust between station-holding bouts.

Habitat

Neogastromyzon crassiobex is endemic to Peninsular Malaysia, recorded from hill streams in the Kedah and Terengganu drainages. The type locality is Sungai Berasut, Kedah — a clear, fast-flowing stream over smooth bedrock and cobble at low to moderate elevation. These streams run cool and turbulent, with dissolved oxygen near saturation year-round and little suspended sediment.

The water chemistry is soft and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the granitic and forested catchments typical of Peninsular Malaysia's hill streams. Temperature in such habitats typically falls in the range of 64–75 °F, markedly cooler than the lowland rivers that support most 'tropical' aquarium fish. The species is rheophilic in the fullest sense: it is found on exposed rock faces within the main current, not in backwaters, leaf litter or still pools. The rocky substrate it occupies is thickly coated in periphyton — the algal and diatom biofilm that forms both its food and a measure of habitat quality.

Feeding

Neogastromyzon crassiobex is an aufwuchs grazer. In the wild it rasps periphyton — diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria and the microfauna embedded in biofilm — directly from rock surfaces in fast current. This is not generalist herbivory; it is specialist grazing on the specific microalgal communities that colonise sunlit, silt-free rock faces in well-oxygenated hill streams.

In the aquarium, translating this diet reliably is the central challenge. The fish needs a mature, algae-covered rockscape: bare or freshly set-up tanks simply do not provide enough food, and the species starves on a timescale of weeks without supplementary feeding. Provide sinking wafers (spirulina, algae-based) and blanched greens — courgette, spinach, cucumber — pressed against smooth stones. Small live and frozen foods (daphnia, baby brine shrimp) round out the protein fraction. It will not compete well for food at the surface or with faster midwater fish; target-feed as needed.

Mating

Very little specific information on mating behaviour in Neogastromyzon crassiobex has been published. By analogy with better-studied hillstream genera, the sexes are likely distinguishable in breeding condition by body depth — ripe females become noticeably plumper — though this difference collapses outside the spawning season. Some hillstream balitorids develop subtle nuptial colouration or dermal roughness in males, but such features have not been formally documented for this species.

Mating in rheophilic balitorids appears to occur directly on the rock face within fast-flowing zones. There is no evidence of courtship displays comparable to those of cichlids or labyrinthfishes; the process is likely brief and opportunistic, tied to seasonal stream conditions. Data on precise mating triggers for N. crassiobex are sparse.

Breeding

Neogastromyzon crassiobex has not been reported as bred in home aquaria, and captive breeding of the genus as a whole is rare. Where breeding has been documented in closely related hillstream balitorids — most notably in Sewellia lineolata — it has occurred in mature, strongly-flowing tanks with a deep, mature biofilm on every rock surface, and has involved the scattering of small, adhesive eggs among stones or in crevices in the current, with no parental care whatsoever. This is the realistic breeding template for the genus.

For most Neogastromyzon the honest position is that captive reproduction has not been confirmed. Triggering a spawn would require replicating the cool, highly oxygenated, fast-flowing conditions of a hill stream in prime condition — a significant equipment commitment — and rearing the tiny fry on microalgae in a turbulent environment adds further difficulty. The species is not, as far as is known, produced in captivity for the trade.

In the aquarium

Neogastromyzon crassiobex is an expert-level fish, best suited to a dedicated hillstream tank rather than a mixed community. The two conditions it cannot survive without are fast, turbulent, highly oxygenated flow and a mature biological surface — a rockscape coated in algae and biofilm. A powerhead or wavemaker capable of producing laminar or turbulent flow across smooth cobble and flat rock is essential; a bare tank or one with a standard community filter is not adequate. Minimum tank size should account for the species' need for current gradients: a tank of at least 23.5–31.5 in in length with a powerful return pump is a practical starting point.

Water temperature must be kept cool — 64–75 °F is the target range — and dissolved oxygen kept high through vigorous surface agitation. The near-scaleless body makes N. crassiobex unusually sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many other treatments; always use half-doses and copper-free formulations. The species is not reported as aggressive, but it should be housed with other rheophilic fish that share its flow and temperature requirements, not with warm-water tropical community fish that would suffer in the same conditions. Small groups are preferable to solitary individuals, as this reduces stress and encourages more natural behaviour on the rock face.

Conservation

Neogastromyzon crassiobex has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, and carries a status of Not Evaluated. This is not unusual for small endemic balitorids described in the 2000s: the group is species-rich, surveys of hill streams in Peninsular Malaysia are incomplete, and the administrative process of Red List assessment lags behind formal descriptions by years or decades.

The biological picture for a narrow endemic of this kind is nonetheless concerning. A species restricted to a few stream drainages in Kedah and Terengganu occupies a naturally small range, and hill streams in Peninsular Malaysia face ongoing pressures from agricultural runoff, siltation from logging roads and palm oil expansion, water abstraction, and the periodic effects of drought on cool upland headwaters. Any of these pressures can eliminate rheophilic, high-oxygen specialists from a stream quickly and permanently. The species is only occasionally encountered in the aquarium trade; collection pressure is unlikely to be a significant threat at current levels, but a lack of monitoring means its status in the wild is genuinely unknown.
