Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus was described by Robert Inger and Philip Chin in 1961, based on specimens collected from a tributary of the Baleh River, opposite Sungai Laie, Sarawak, in what is now the Malaysian state on Borneo. The parenthetical authority notation reflects the standard convention that the species was described under a different generic combination before being placed in Neogastromyzon.
The genus Neogastromyzon belongs to the family Gastromyzontidae, the Bornean hillstream loaches — a group restricted to Borneo that clings to exposed rock in fast-flowing torrential streams. Earlier classifications often placed these fishes in the broader family Balitoridae, and that assignment still appears on some databases, but the consensus in recent ichthyological literature recognises Gastromyzontidae as the appropriate family for the Bornean hillstream loaches. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name.
The specific epithet pauciradiatus derives from the Latin paucus (few) and radiatus (rayed), most likely referring to a reduced fin-ray count compared with other members of the genus. Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus is closely related to other Bornean hillstream loaches such as N. crassiobex (the Cow River loach) and can be confused with them without close examination.
Morphology
This is a small, dorso-ventrally flattened fish adapted for life in fast-flowing, oxygen-rich torrents. The body profile is streamlined and depressed, the head broad and flattened, and the entire ventral surface — including the pectoral and pelvic fins, which are held horizontally — functions as an adhesive sucker that locks the fish to smooth rock surfaces in powerful current. The sucker is formed from modified fin tissue and skin rather than a single discrete organ, a design shared across Gastromyzontidae.
Adult standard length reaches approximately 2.5 in, making this a small species within its genus. Coloration typically involves a mottled or banded brown-and-cream pattern that provides camouflage against the algae-covered rock substrate of its native streams. The skin is effectively naked to the touch — the scales are very small and deeply embedded — a feature that is important medically, since it means the fish absorbs dissolved substances from the water more readily than scaled fishes.
Habitat
Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus is a Borneo endemic, native to fast-flowing, rocky hill and mountain streams in Sarawak, East Malaysia. The type locality is a tributary of the Baleh River, a major tributary of the Rejang — one of Borneo's largest river systems. The water in these torrential headwater streams is cool (64–75 °F), crystal-clear, highly oxygenated and of neutral to slightly acidic pH. The substrate is exposed bedrock and boulders encrusted with biofilm, periphyton, diatoms and green algae — the essential food resource for this and related species.
This is a rheophilic fish in the strictest sense: it is physiologically adapted to life in strong current and cannot survive in still or sluggish water. Dissolved oxygen levels in its native streams are close to saturation, and water temperature rarely exceeds 75 °F even in lowland reaches. Habitat degradation through deforestation, siltation and stream modification is the principal threat recognised in its IUCN assessment.
Feeding
Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus is an obligate aufwuchs grazer. In the wild it rasps biofilm, periphytic algae, diatoms and fine organic detritus from rock surfaces, using a subterminal, scraping mouth equipped for abrading hard substrate. The trophic level recorded for the species is 2.7, reflecting a diet dominated by plant-derived and decomposed organic material rather than animal prey.
In the aquarium this biology is the single most important care consideration. A newly established tank with bare glass, artificial decor or unstained substrate provides essentially nothing for this fish to eat, and it will starve even if offered food it cannot easily graze from a surface. The tank must be mature — ideally several months old — with visible green-brown biofilm and algae on rocks, glass and hardscape. Supplementary feeding with blanched vegetables (cucumber, courgette), spirulina-based wafers and small frozen foods such as bloodworm or brine shrimp can help, but none of these substitutes for a living biofilm layer on rough rock. High-intensity lighting, which drives algal and biofilm growth, is therefore an indirect but essential dietary requirement.
Mating
Sexual dimorphism in Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus is not well documented; as with most hillstream loaches, distinguishing the sexes externally is difficult. Mature females of related hillstream loach species tend to be broader across the body when gravid, and males may show subtle differences in fin shape or skin texture, but no reliable field mark has been published for this species specifically.
In the wild, spawning is likely tied to seasonal variation in flow and temperature — the triggers that cue most hillstream loach reproduction in Bornean streams. Little specific information on courtship behaviour in this species has been reported in the scientific or hobbyist literature.
Breeding
Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus has rarely if ever been bred in home aquaria, and specific accounts of captive spawning are absent from the available literature. The species is an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the mode shared by hillstream loaches generally. Where spawning has been observed in closely related gastromyzontid loaches, eggs are deposited among stones and gravel in areas of strong current, with the adults taking no further part after fertilisation.
A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably the Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have been successfully spawned in mature, strongly-flowing aquaria by keepers who replicated the right combination of high flow, cool temperature, a deep gravel bed and an established biofilm covering. Whether N. pauciradiatus is equally amenable under those conditions is unknown. Honest advice for prospective keepers is to aim for the best possible husbandry, maintain a well-oxygenated high-flow setup with cool water year-round, and treat any spawning as a bonus rather than an expectation. The fish in the trade are wild-collected.
In the aquarium
Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus is a specialist that rewards informed keepers and defeats uninformed ones very reliably. The three non-negotiable requirements are strong current, cool temperature and a mature biofilm surface — remove any one of them and the fish declines quickly. A power head or circulation pump delivering a strong, turbulent flow over rockwork is essential; a conventional hang-on filter alone will not suffice. Temperature must be kept at 64–75 °F, ideally at the cooler end; the fish is a coolwater species and will deteriorate above 77 °F. Weekly 30% water changes with dechlorinated, well-oxygenated water are recommended to maintain the water quality its native streams provide.
The aquascape should consist of rounded boulders, smooth flat stones and gravel, all well-colonised with algae and biofilm — which means the tank should be running for several months before the fish is introduced, and lit intensively enough to grow algae. Bright LED lighting run for 10–12 hours per day accelerates biofilm colonisation. Supplementary foods can include blanched cucumber and courgette laid directly on the rock, spirulina wafers pressed against the glass, and small frozen foods offered in the current. The fish's skin is effectively scaleless, which means it absorbs medications readily; if disease treatment is necessary, use products safe for scaleless fishes and apply them at half the standard dose as a precaution.
Conservation
Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in January 2019 under criteria B1ab(i,iii). The NT designation reflects the species' narrow endemic range in the fast-flowing streams of Sarawak, Borneo, and the ongoing threat to those habitats from deforestation, siltation from agricultural and logging runoff, and water extraction. Though not currently classified as Vulnerable, the trajectory of lowland and foothill stream habitat in Borneo — under sustained pressure from oil-palm expansion, logging and development — gives reason for concern about species with such restricted, habitat-specific distributions.
Borneo's freshwater fish fauna contains a disproportionately high number of endemic stream specialists, many of them poorly studied. Neogastromyzon pauciradiatus is among the least-documented members of its genus, and any significant deterioration in the quality of its home streams could push a species of already limited range toward a more threatened category. Wild collection for the aquarium trade adds a degree of additional pressure, though the species is not common in commerce. Conservation of the intact, forested headwater catchments of Sarawak's river systems is the most important lever for securing its future.
