Neogastromyzon chini is a compact hillstream loach from the fast-flowing rocky streams of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, where it spends its life plastered to cobbles in water so clear and vigorous that most aquarium fish would be swept away. Described by Heok Hee Tan in 2006 and named in honour of the ichthyologist Chin Phui Kong, whose surveys illuminated the freshwater fish fauna of Sarawak and Sabah, it reaches around 2 in in standard length and is a member of the family Balitoridae — the true hillstream and torrent loaches of southern and eastern Asia. Its flattened body and modified paired fins form a natural suction pad against smooth, current-blasted rock, and its entire biology is calibrated for cool, highly oxygenated, fast-moving water. A keeper who mistakes it for a generic algae eater and places it in a warm, still tank has made an almost certain death sentence: starvation and asphyxiation follow quickly in conditions that would suit a typical community fish perfectly well.

Taxonomy & naming

Neogastromyzon chini was formally described by the Singapore-based ichthyologist Heok Hee Tan in 2006, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names in ichthyology — accepts this combination. The genus Neogastromyzon was erected to separate a group of Bornean hillstream loaches from the broader genus Gastromyzon on the basis of differences in the arrangement of the paired fins and the structure of the adhesive ventral apparatus. The family Balitoridae unites the hillstream and torrent loaches of Asia — rheophilic, benthic fishes that colonise fast-water rocky habitats from the Himalayan foothills to the islands of Sundaland.

The species epithet honours Chin Phui Kong, a Malaysian ichthyologist whose sustained fieldwork in Sarawak and Sabah produced the foundational collections and taxonomic literature on the freshwater fishes of Malaysian Borneo. The species was described from specimens collected in the Rejang, Lupar and Sadong river basins in Sarawak, and its distribution appears confined to those drainages. No older synonyms are recorded; the 2006 description is the only valid combination.

Morphology

Like every member of Neogastromyzon, this species is unmistakably a hillstream loach: the body is strongly flattened top-to-bottom, the head broad and depressed, the pectoral and pelvic fins spread horizontally and held close to the substrate. Together the paired fins and the flattened belly form a friction-based adhesive surface — not a true sucker in the anatomical sense but mechanically effective for clinging to slick, current-swept cobbles. At rest, the fish lies flush to a stone and is easily overlooked; when disturbed, it can scuttle rapidly across the rock face in any direction.

Maximum size is approximately 2 in standard length — a small fish by any measure, with the typical loach proportions of a slightly arched mid-body tapering to a slender caudal peduncle. The skin is effectively scaleless to the touch, a feature shared with most balitorids, and this matters acutely in the aquarium: bare skin absorbs medications far more readily than a scaled fish, and Neogastromyzon chini should be treated with caution whenever disease treatment is required. Coloration in life shows the brownish-tan mottled patterning common to many Bornean hillstream genera, providing excellent cryptic cover on a pebbled streambed.

Habitat

Neogastromyzon chini is endemic to Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo, known from the Rejang, Lupar and Sadong river basins. Its preferred microhabitat is the rocky, high-gradient reaches of hill streams and smaller tributaries where the current runs fast enough to keep the substrate scoured clean of silt and to maintain very high dissolved oxygen levels. The fish lives in the benthic zone, pressed against stone surfaces polished by the current and overgrown with the thin crust of algae, diatoms and microbial biofilm that forms on any rock exposed to strong, well-lit, moving water.

Water conditions in these streams are typically cool by tropical standards, clear, and low in dissolved nutrients. The pace and force of the current that the fish requires for normal respiration — hillstream loaches exchange gas across the skin and gills simultaneously, and both processes depend on a continuous supply of saturated water flowing over the body — means that a still-water environment is not simply uncomfortable but acutely harmful. The species occupies a narrow ecological niche, and its aquarium requirements must reflect that niche faithfully.

Feeding

Neogastromyzon chini is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer. In the wild it forages continuously across rock surfaces, rasping off the thin layer of algae, diatoms, periphyton and associated micro-invertebrates with its underslung, papillose mouth. Its trophic level is recorded at approximately 2.8 on the FishBase scale, consistent with a diet dominated by plant-derived material and microorganisms rather than larger prey.

In the aquarium, the practical consequence of this biology is stark: the fish cannot survive in a new, bare or sparsely furnished tank. It needs a mature aquarium whose rocks and glass are visibly coated in algae and biofilm — the product of weeks or months of growth under strong lighting run for eight hours or more per day. Without that grazing surface it starves, often slowly, with no obvious outward sign until it is too late. Supplementary foods should be offered: sinking algae wafers and spirulina-based discs, blanched greens such as courgette and spinach, and small frozen foods including bloodworms, Mysis shrimp and newly hatched Artemia to supply animal protein. The fish is not a flake-eater and will not compete at the surface for floating food.

Mating

Virtually nothing has been published on the reproductive behaviour of Neogastromyzon chini in the wild or in captivity. What is understood comes partly from work on related Gastromyzontidae and from the few aquarium accounts of hillstream loach spawning in general. The sexes are not reliably distinguished by external characters under normal conditions; ripe females may appear somewhat fuller-bodied in the abdominal region, but this is subtle and not a dependable field mark.

In strongly-flowing, mature aquaria with appropriate conditions, courtship in hillstream loaches typically involves the male pursuing the female closely across rock surfaces, with the fish making brief pressed-together contacts before the female deposits eggs. There is no pair bond formation and no elaborate display of the kind seen in some other fish groups. For Neogastromyzon specifically, captive spawning observations are scarce, and keepers who wish to attempt breeding should not expect results in an ordinary community setup.

Breeding

Most hillstream loach genera have never been bred in home aquaria, and Neogastromyzon is among the more rarely reported. The reproductive strategy is egg-scattering with no parental care: eggs are released into fast-flowing water over stone and gravel substrates, where they may lodge in crevices or settle among coarse particles. There is no nest construction, no guarding, and no mouthbrooding — the adults scatter and depart. Where captive breeding of Gastromyzontidae has been achieved (Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam is the best-documented example), it has required a well-established, high-flow river tank, naturally high oxygen levels, a mature biofilm layer, and what appears to be a conditioning period with varied live and frozen foods.

For Neogastromyzon chini specifically, the available accounts note egg-releasing as the breeding strategy and suggest that eggs can hatch in approximately two weeks under suitable conditions. This is an encouraging sign, but reliable captive reproduction remains uncommon. A keeper who maintains this fish well in the correct conditions may encounter spawning, but should not regard it as a routine or predictable event. The fish sold in the trade are almost certainly wild-collected from Sarawak.

In the aquarium

Neogastromyzon chini is one of the more demanding hillstream loaches, not because it is behaviorally difficult, but because it cannot be kept in the conditions that suit most community aquaria. The first requirement is cool, oxygen-saturated, fast-moving water. The species has been associated with a temperature window of roughly 75–77 °F, and it struggles above the low-to-mid twenties; a fully tropical community tank running at 82 °F or more will kill it within days or weeks. A dedicated hillstream setup — or a tank with naturally cool room-temperature water and a powerful powerhead or wave pump creating turbulent flow over stacked cobblestones and slate — is the appropriate environment. A minimum of six individuals is recommended for social security; in the wild these fish live in aggregations, and isolated specimens fail to thrive.

The substrate should be a mix of smooth river pebbles and coarse sand at least a few centimetres deep, with large cobbles and slate slabs offering broad flat surfaces for grazing and perching. Strong lighting, maintained for eight or more hours daily, drives the biofilm growth the fish depends on; leave rocks undisturbed so the surface colonisation can build. Because the skin is effectively scaleless, copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many medications must be avoided — use half-doses and copper-free products if disease treatment is unavoidable, and treat with caution. These fish are not suitable for the standard algae-control slot in a mixed community tank; they are a centrepiece species for a cold, high-flow specialist setup.

Conservation

Neogastromyzon chini is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2019 assessment), reflecting a judgement that the species does not currently meet the thresholds for a threatened category. Its range is confined to Sarawak — the Rejang, Lupar and Sadong basins — making it an endemic of a single political territory, and its dependence on clean, fast-flowing hill streams means it is inherently sensitive to anything that degrades those environments.

The primary threats facing hill-stream fish fauna in Borneo are the familiar pressures of Sundaland: forest clearance for oil palm and timber in the catchments feeding these streams, which increases sedimentation and raises water temperatures; small-scale gold mining and its associated mercury and sediment loading; and dam construction on major river systems. While none of these is documented as currently driving a population decline in this species specifically, the cumulative pressure on upland Bornean streams is real and growing. Fish collected for the aquarium trade are almost certainly taken directly from wild populations, since captive breeding is not established; the impact of that collection on a range-restricted endemic warrants monitoring even under a Least Concern designation.
