Neogastromyzon kottelati is a tiny Bornean hillstream loach barely reaching 1.5 in, built from the ground up for life in fast, cold, oxygen-saturated torrent streams. Its flattened body and modified fins form a sucker-like adhesion system for clinging to boulders in the current, and its entire physiology is calibrated to water that is cool, swift and saturated with dissolved oxygen. In the aquarium it is not an easy fish — it is a demanding specialist that will slowly starve in a bare tank, suffocate in still warm water, and simply disappear from neglected systems — but in a mature, high-flow river tank carpeted in biofilm it can thrive and is a quietly spectacular inhabitant.

Taxonomy & naming

Neogastromyzon kottelati was described by Heok Hee Tan in 2006 in a revision of the Bornean torrent loaches (Balitoridae): Gastromyzon and Neogastromyzon — the primary monograph covering these suckermouth hillstream genera of Borneo. The species epithet honours Maurice Kottelat, the Swiss ichthyologist whose sustained work on Southeast Asian freshwater fish, including key revisions of the Cobitoidea, has fundamentally shaped our understanding of the group.

The genus Neogastromyzon sits within the family Balitoridae (sometimes placed within the broader Gastromyzontidae in older classifications), the suckermouth or hillstream loaches of South and Southeast Asia. These fish are part of the superfamily Cobitoidea, a group whose taxonomy has been substantially restructured over recent decades as molecular and morphological studies have resolved the old polyphyletic "Balitoridae" and the broad catch-all genus Gastromyzon into a more refined arrangement. The current valid combination, Neogastromyzon kottelati Tan, 2006, is recognised by the Catalog of Fishes.

No subspecies or location variants are recognised. The species is endemic to a single river system and has not been split further.

Morphology

Like all members of Neogastromyzon, kottelati is strongly dorsoventrally flattened — a shape honed by millions of years in torrent conditions. The head and abdomen are pressed flat against the substrate, and the paired pectoral and pelvic fins are enlarged and spread horizontally, together forming a broad adhesive platform that allows the fish to hold station against powerful currents. This is not a sucker disc in the strict morphological sense but a functional suction system created by the geometry of the fin spread and body curvature.

Maximum recorded standard length is 1.5 in — a genuinely small fish even by hillstream standards. The body is sparsely scaled, the skin feeling nearly naked to the touch, which has implications for medication sensitivity. Coloration is typical of the genus: a pale to brownish base with darker reticulated or mottled patterning across the dorsal surface, providing camouflage against the pebble and bedrock substrates it inhabits.

There is no conspicuous suborbital spine of the botiid type, as this species belongs to a different loach lineage (Balitoridae rather than Botiidae). The mouth is ventral and subterminal, adapted for rasping aufwuchs — the biofilm community of algae, diatoms, bacteria and detritus — directly from rock surfaces.

Habitat

Neogastromyzon kottelati is endemic to the upper Kapuas River basin in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. The Kapuas is the longest river in Indonesia, and its headwater tributaries in the Borneo highlands are cool, clear, swift-flowing streams tumbling over bedrock, boulders and cobble substrates. These are rheophilic habitats — fast-water environments where dissolved oxygen is high, sedimentation low, and the substrate is scoured clean of fine particles, leaving a hard surface colonised by algae, diatoms and biofilm.

Water temperatures in upper hill stream habitats in Borneo's highlands are notably cooler than lowland river reaches, typically in the range of 64–75 °F. The current is strong and constant; at no season does this habitat approximate the warm, still, eutrophic conditions of a typical community aquarium. Water clarity is high and hardness low, with pH broadly neutral to slightly acidic.

The species inhabits the shallowest, most turbulent zones — riffles and cascades over exposed rock — where the oxygen content is highest and competition from lowland species is minimal. It is a strict freshwater fish of the mid- to upper-altitude hill stream zone.

Feeding

Neogastromyzon kottelati is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps the biofilm community (algae, diatoms, bacteria, organic detritus) from rock and pebble surfaces using its adapted ventral mouth. This is the dietary mode of the entire hillstream loach guild, and it is also the axis along which most captive individuals fail: a fish moved into a bare or recently-established tank will simply find nothing to eat and decline over weeks.

In an aquarium context, the key requirement is a mature, algae- and biofilm-covered rockscape. Smooth river pebbles, flat slate and other hard substrates that have been in a well-lit, circulating tank for several months develop the green and brown biofilm that kottelati and its relatives depend on. Supplemental feeding with blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), sinking algae wafers and small frozen foods (daphnia, cyclops, micro-worm) is necessary and helps compensate for the thin biofilm of even a well-established aquarium.

This is emphatically not a species to rely on for general tank algae control. It is a highly specialised feeder with modest dietary breadth, not a worker that will clean walls and glass on demand.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in Neogastromyzon kottelati is not well documented. In related hillstream genera, females in breeding condition are typically plumper-bodied and somewhat more rounded when viewed from above, reflecting gravid condition, while males may show subtly more prominent rostral features or tubercles during the breeding season — but these differences are modest and require direct comparison of same-sized, conditioned individuals to read reliably.

In the wild, spawning in rheophilic balitorids is tied to seasonal conditions — likely the onset of rainfall and increased flow that follows the dry season, when temperature shifts and hydrological cues synchronise reproductive readiness in the population. The upstream torrent habitat itself is the spawning environment: no migration to different water bodies is involved as it is in the large river-floodplain loaches.

Breeding

Breeding of Neogastromyzon kottelati has not been documented in the aquarium literature. Like most hillstream loaches, the species is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria. Related gastromyzontid hillstream loaches have been observed using two broad reproductive strategies in the wild: egg-releasing (eggs shed freely into the current) and egg-burying (eggs pressed into fine gravel or between stone interstices), in both cases with no subsequent parental care.

A small number of hillstream loach species — most famously Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have been induced to spawn in a mature, strongly-flowing river tank; the pattern is egg-scattering among and beneath stones with no parental involvement, and success depends on sustained high flow, cool water, excellent oxygenation and an established biofilm base. Whether kottelati can be similarly induced is unknown, but the same conditions that keep it healthy are those most likely to produce any breeding behaviour.

For the keeper, the honest position is that Neogastromyzon kottelati should be purchased as a long-term display fish, not as a potential breeding project. The trade relies on wild-collected specimens, and captive breeding of this genus at any scale has not been reported.

In the aquarium

Neogastromyzon kottelati is a specialist fish that rewards specialist care. The non-negotiable requirements are: cool water (64–75 °F — warmer than this and the fish begins to decline from chronic oxygen debt and heat stress), strong and continuous current from a powerhead or high-turnover filtration system, and high dissolved oxygen. A well-aerated tank that feels like a river riffle is the target; still water, even well-filtered still water, will slowly suffocate this fish because it cannot move to seek higher-oxygen zones the way a free-swimming fish can.

The second non-negotiable is a mature biofilm surface. Smooth river cobbles, flat slate pieces and other hard substrates that have been running under good light for at least two to three months develop the brown and green biofilm coat that kottelati needs for daily foraging. Without it, the fish will slowly starve regardless of how many wafers are offered. Setting up a new tank and immediately adding hillstream loaches is the commonest way to kill them.

A tank of at least 15–20 US gal with a good flow rate, a mixed substrate of sand and cobbles, and several flat rocks angled to catch the current is appropriate for a small group. Because the skin is nearly scaleless, this species is sensitive to copper-based medications and should be treated only with half-doses of appropriate products, with tank removal to a quarantine vessel preferred where possible. Ich is a risk in cooler hillstream tanks if temperatures fluctuate; careful monitoring is warranted. Keep with similarly sized, cool-water, current-adapted species; do not combine with warm-water community fish.

Conservation

Neogastromyzon kottelati is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2019). The assessment reflects a stable population within its known range in the upper Kapuas basin and no documented evidence of large-scale decline. The species is an endemic of highland torrent streams in Indonesian Borneo, a habitat type that — while not immune to pressure — has been less severely degraded than lowland river systems in the region.

The broader risks to stream-endemic hillstream loaches in Borneo are habitat driven: deforestation, gold and other small-scale mining (which introduces fine sediment and turbidity into streams otherwise kept clear by fast current), agricultural run-off, and infrastructure development affecting headwater catchments. For a rheophilic species that depends on fast, clear, well-oxygenated water and hard substrate biofilm, sedimentation and turbidity are particularly damaging. The aquarium trade supplies specimens from wild collection; there is no captive-bred production of this or related Neogastromyzon species at any commercial scale, and trade volumes are low given the species' specialised requirements and limited hobbyist demand.
