Neogastromyzon brunei is a small hillstream loach from the fast, clear hill streams of Brunei Darussalam on the island of Borneo, described by H.H. Tan in 2006. Like all members of its genus, it is built for life in strong current: a flattened body, paired pectoral and pelvic fins spread wide like paired hydrofoils, and an abdominal surface adapted to grip rock in rushing water. It rasps biofilm and algae from stone surfaces in cool, highly oxygenated torrents, and it starves and suffocates in the warm, still, bare tanks it is so often placed in — the single most common cause of death in captive hillstream loaches. In the aquarium it rewards the keeper who provides fast flow, mature algae-coated rockwork, and cool, pristine water with a flash of patterned colour and an endearingly tenacious grip on whatever surface it happens to be resting on.

Taxonomy & naming

Neogastromyzon brunei was described by Heok Hee Tan in 2006, when he erected the genus Neogastromyzon to accommodate a cluster of Bornean hillstream loaches previously placed in the broad catch-all genus Gastromyzon. The genus name distinguishes these fish from the closely related Gastromyzon, with which they share much of Borneo's hill-stream drainage; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Neogastromyzon as a valid genus within the family Balitoridae.

Older literature may refer to this species or its close relatives under Gastromyzon or within broader assemblages of Bornean hillstream loaches before the 2006 revision. The family Balitoridae encompasses the hillstream, torrent and river loaches — a diverse group found across South and Southeast Asia — and is separate from Botiidae (the botiid loaches, including the clown loach) and Cobitidae (the spined loaches and kuhlis). Within Balitoridae, Neogastromyzon is a genus of small, rock-clinging torrent specialists endemic to Borneo.

Morphology

Neogastromyzon brunei is a small loach, typically reaching around 1.5–2 in in standard length, with the highly derived body plan that characterises all torrent-dwelling Balitoridae. The body is strongly depressed — flattened from top to bottom — and the paired fins are held horizontally, greatly expanded and positioned low on the flanks so that the entire ventral surface forms a broad, rock-gripping platform in fast current. This is not a fish that merely tolerates current; its anatomy is an adaptation to living inside it.

The colouration is cryptic but attractive: a pale to tan or yellowish-brown ground is overlaid with a pattern of darker spots, blotches or saddles that provides camouflage against the mottled rock and gravel of a hill stream. As in other balitorids, the skin carries only very fine, deeply-embedded scales — the fish feels almost naked to the touch — and there is no conspicuous suborbital spine of the kind carried by botiid loaches. The small, inferior mouth is adapted for rasping biofilm and algae from rock surfaces.

Habitat

Neogastromyzon brunei is native to the fast-flowing hill streams and torrents of Brunei Darussalam on northern Borneo. Its native waters are cool, clear, highly oxygenated, and run swiftly over bedrock, boulders, cobble and gravel. The streams lie within tropical lowland and foothill rainforest at relatively low elevation but benefit from the high ambient rainfall and shade canopy that keep water temperatures distinctly cooler than the surrounding lowland rivers — typically in the range of 68–79 °F, and often cooler still in the upper reaches.

Water chemistry is soft and mildly acidic to neutral, reflecting the granitic and sandstone catchments of Borneo's interior hills. Dissolved oxygen is high because of the turbulent flow. These are not sluggish blackwater streams stained with tannins; they are clear, stony, fast-running channels that provide both a firm substrate for biofilm growth and the constant current that underpins the fish's biology. Outside Brunei, the closely related members of Neogastromyzon are found in Malaysian Sarawak and Sabah on Borneo.

Feeding

Neogastromyzon brunei is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In the wild it scrapes algae, diatoms, micro-invertebrates and organic detritus from the surface of rocks and boulders in fast current, using its small inferior mouth like a rasp. The continuous availability of this living biofilm crust — which only develops on mature, well-lit rock surfaces in well-established, flowing water — is the central trophic requirement of the species and the most commonly overlooked by keepers.

In the aquarium, supplementary feeding should include blanched and softened vegetables such as courgette, cucumber or spinach, high-quality algae wafers and sinking spirulina-based foods, and occasional small frozen foods such as daphnia or cyclops. The fish will also graze constantly on the natural algae and biofilm of a mature tank. What it will not accept is the absence of these resources: a bare or newly-established tank with no biofilm and no supplementary soft foods is a tank in which a hillstream loach starves — slowly, invisibly, and with nothing obvious to point to until the fish is already far gone. This starvation dynamic is the most common cause of death in captive Neogastromyzon and their kin.

Mating

Information on mating behaviour in Neogastromyzon brunei specifically is sparse; what is known comes largely from related Bornean hillstream loaches and from the broader genus. Sexual dimorphism is subtle and difficult to assess without experience. Mature females are typically deeper-bodied and slightly wider across the abdomen than males when in breeding condition, but the difference is not pronounced and the fish's flat body shape makes it difficult to observe.

In the wild, breeding in hillstream balitorids is associated with the seasonal rhythms of rainfall and water conditions in the hill streams — changes in flow, temperature, and food availability that the aquarium rarely replicates in full. Courtship, where observed in related genera, involves the male pursuing and positioning alongside the female in the current before spawning occurs in or among the stones.

Breeding

Neogastromyzon brunei is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria; there are no well-documented captive-spawning accounts for this species in the available literature. It is an egg-scatterer with no parental care: when spawning occurs, eggs are deposited among the interstices of stones and gravel in flowing water, and the adults take no further interest in either eggs or young. This pattern — shared by most balitorid hillstream loaches — means that success in captivity requires a mature, high-flow aquarium with appropriate stone substrate rather than any form of prepared spawning structure or pair conditioning.

A small number of hillstream loach species in related genera, notably Sewellia lineolata, have been spawned in very well-established river-tank set-ups with strong flow and mature biofilm, confirming that captive breeding in the group is not impossible in principle. Whether Neogastromyzon brunei can be induced to spawn under similar conditions is not established. The trade supply of this and related Neogastromyzon species is drawn from wild-collected fish, not from captive-bred stock.

In the aquarium

Neogastromyzon brunei is a specialist fish that fails predictably in the wrong conditions and does well in the right ones. The right conditions are a mature aquarium — at minimum 23.5–31.5 in in length — with a powerful flow: a turnover rate of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is a reasonable target, generated by a powerhead or strong canister filter directed across a landscape of clean boulders, cobble and smooth rocks. The tank must be mature; established biofilm and algae on the rock surfaces are as important as any commercial food. Temperature should be kept on the cool side, in the range of 68–77 °F; the combination of warmth and stagnant water is fatal.

Neogastromyzon are not particularly social but are not strongly territorial either; a small group of three to six fish can be kept together and will make use of the tank more fully than a solitary specimen. They are peaceful with other species that share their habitat requirements — other hillstream loaches, gobies adapted to fast water, and small danios or rasboras that can cope with the current — and should not be placed with sluggish bottom-dwellers or fish that require warm, still conditions.

Because balitorid skin carries only fine, embedded scales, these fish absorb medications readily and are sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many proprietary remedies. Treatments should be used at reduced doses, with strong aeration and close observation. Purchase only healthy, well-acclimated specimens, and quarantine before adding to an established display.

Conservation

Neogastromyzon brunei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN, and it carries no Red List category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Its range appears to be restricted to hill streams in Brunei Darussalam and possibly adjacent parts of Sarawak on Borneo, making it a naturally range-restricted species with a limited total area of occupancy even within its native island.

Brunei's interior forests and watersheds are relatively well protected compared with other parts of Borneo, where large-scale deforestation, palm oil expansion, and the silting and warming of streams have eliminated or degraded many hill-stream fish habitats. The direct threat from the aquarium trade is difficult to assess; Neogastromyzon brunei is a niche species with limited international trade volume, and it is not commercially produced in captivity. Wild collection from already-limited stream habitats, even at low intensity, is a factor worth monitoring for any range-restricted endemic. Maintaining the cool, clear, fast-flowing streams it depends on — which requires intact forest cover on the surrounding catchment — is the key conservation requirement for this species and its kin.
