Oxynoemacheilus insignis, the Syrian or Palestine loach, is a small, little-known stone loach from the streams and rivers of the Levant — the Damascus basin of Syria and the Jordan/Dead Sea drainage shared by Syria, Israel and Jordan, with a recent record extending into Turkey. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family, whose members are mostly bold, benthic micro-predators of clear, fast, well-oxygenated streams rather than the show fish of the trade. Reaching only around 4.5 in, it is a modest, near-scaleless bottom-dweller that lives quietly out of the aquarium spotlight, and much of its biology in captivity remains genuinely data-sparse. What is well documented is more sobering: the rivers it depends on are increasingly dammed, over-abstracted and polluted, and the species is assessed as Near Threatened as a result.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus insignis was described by the Austrian naturalist Jakob Heckel in 1843, in the early wave of European exploration of Levantine freshwaters. Like much of the old "Nemacheilus" and "Noemacheilus" complex, it has been shuffled between genera as the stone-loach family was untangled by molecular and morphological revision; it is treated today under Oxynoemacheilus, one of several genera split out to hold the Middle Eastern and Anatolian stone loaches once lumped together. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current combination, and this article keeps that placement rather than reverting to an older name still seen in some regional literature.

It sits in Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one whose species list is still being refined region by region. The species is also referenced under the synonym-adjacent common name "Palestine loach" in some sources, reflecting the Jordan/Dead Sea part of its range.

Morphology

This is a small, elongate stone loach, reported to reach about 4.5 in in total length with most wild individuals closer to 3 in — modest even by the standards of Nemacheilidae. Like its relatives it is a benthopelagic fish built for holding position on the bottom of moving water: a slim, rounded body, a flattened underside, and small barbels around the mouth for finding food by touch and taste along stony or muddy stream beds.

As in other true loaches, the skin carries very small, deeply embedded scales rather than the large plate-like scales of many other fish groups, leaving it functionally near-scaleless — a detail that matters for its sensitivity to medications and to poor water quality. Documented external variation across its range is notable: populations from different tributaries and basins show some phenotypic variability, a common pattern in isolated stream-loach populations, though a detailed comparative account of these forms is not part of the sources consulted here.

Habitat

Oxynoemacheilus insignis is native to the Levant: the Damascus river basin in Syria, and the Jordan River/Dead Sea drainage spanning Syria, Israel and Jordan, with a recent record reported from Turkey extending the known range northward. It occupies both fast-flowing and slower stretches of stream and river, over stony or muddy substrates, sometimes among aquatic vegetation. Water in this region runs subtropical rather than tropical, with FishBase citing a temperature range of roughly 63–75 °F — noticeably cooler than the warm blackwater and lowland-river conditions typical of many Southeast Asian loaches. This is a fish of clear-to-moderately-flowing Middle Eastern streams, not a warm, still, tropical species, and its water chemistry and thermal needs should be read accordingly.

Feeding

As a benthopelagic member of the stone-loach family, Oxynoemacheilus insignis fits the well-established Nemacheilidae pattern: a micro-predator that works the stream bed for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other zooplankton-sized prey — rather than grazing algae or taking much plant matter. Specific dietary data for this species were not found in the sources reviewed, so the picture here follows the documented pattern for its close relatives in the genus and family.

Given the lack of documented captive-breeding accounts, the honest summary is that this is a species essentially unknown to have been spawned by hobbyists; any fish in the trade, where it appears at all, should be assumed wild-collected rather than captive-bred. This is not a fish commonly seen in the trade, and detailed aquarium-keeping accounts specific to Oxynoemacheilus insignis were not found in the sources reviewed. Because specific husbandry data for this species is thin, keepers should lean on the conservative, well-documented care standards for Nemacheilidae as a whole rather than assuming it tolerates warm, still, poorly-oxygenated conditions.

Conservation

Oxynoemacheilus insignis is assessed by the IUCN as Near Threatened, a status dating to 2013. The pressures are the familiar ones facing small-range Middle Eastern freshwater fish: its home rivers in the Damascus and Jordan/Dead Sea basins face drying from water overuse and damming, reduced rainfall, and pollution, all of which shrink and degrade the limited stream habitat available to a species with such a tightly bounded native range.

Because its distribution sits across politically complex, water-stressed territory (Syria, Israel, Jordan and now a Turkish record), coordinated conservation action is difficult, and the trend for river health in the region has generally been negative. The species is not a significant part of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not the primary concern here — habitat loss and water-resource conflict are.
