Oxynoemacheilus panthera is a small, little-known stone loach restricted to the Damascus basin of Syria, where it was first collected in the springs and streams that feed the Nahr Barada and Nahr al-A'waj. It is a member of Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family, and shows the plan typical of the group — a slim, near-scaleless, bottom-hugging body built for cool, fast, well-oxygenated water rather than a still aquarium. Reaching only around 3 in, it lives quietly on the streambed picking off small invertebrates, and almost nothing has been published about its reproduction. What is well documented is decline: the species has lost over 90% of its population to water abstraction and the drying of its home streams, and the IUCN lists it as Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus panthera was described by the Austrian naturalist Jakob Heckel in 1843, among the first wave of loaches described from the streams of the Levant. Like many Middle Eastern and Anatolian stone loaches, it has passed through several genus placements over the last century as the old broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were progressively split apart; it is now placed in Oxynoemacheilus, the genus that holds most of the stone loaches of Anatolia, the Levant and the Caucasus, following the Catalog of Fishes.

It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, made up mostly of small, plainly patterned, bottom-dwelling fish of clear running water across Eurasia. The species epithet panthera, Latin for "panther," points to the spotted or blotched patterning original describers used to distinguish it from its relatives.

Morphology

This is a small, slender stone loach, reported to reach about 3 in in total length. Like other Nemacheilidae it has an elongate, only slightly compressed body, a flattened belly suited to holding station on the streambed, and small, low-set eyes. The skin carries very small, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless — a trait shared across the loach families that makes the group sensitive to medication and to copper-based treatments in particular.

A specimen documented from the spring of Barada in Syria measured roughly 3 in standard length, consistent with the species' modest reported maximum size. Detailed published descriptions of fin-ray counts, colour pattern and other diagnostic morphology are sparse for this species outside the original description and a handful of regional papers, so much of its fine anatomy remains under-documented — a common situation for narrow-range stream loaches of this genus.

Habitat

Oxynoemacheilus panthera is endemic to the Damascus basin of Syria, known from the Nahr Barada (Barada River) and Nahr al-A'waj drainages and their spring-fed tributaries, including the type locality springs around Damascus. FishBase classifies it as subtropical, with a typical temperature range of roughly 61–75 °F — cool, clear, running spring and stream water, not the warm, still conditions many aquarists associate with tropical fish.

It is a freshwater, demersal species, living on or near the bottom of small rivers and spring-fed streams rather than in open water or standing pools. Like most stone loaches it depends on continuous flow and reasonably clean, oxygen-rich water; the springs and stream reaches it inhabits in the arid Damascus basin are exactly the kind of limited, easily-disrupted water source that leaves a narrow-range fish like this exposed to any reduction in flow.

Feeding

As typical for a small Nemacheilidae stone loach, Oxynoemacheilus panthera is a bottom-foraging micro-predator, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and other tiny stream-bed fauna — from between gravel and stones in the current. No dedicated dietary study of this species appears in the available sources, so this account follows the well-established feeding pattern of its genus and family rather than species-specific data.

In an aquarium setting, stone loaches of this type generally do best on small sinking foods — frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and fine sinking pellets or granules — offered so they reach the bottom, since these fish rarely compete well for food in open water or at the surface.

Mating

No published account of courtship or spawning behaviour for Oxynoemacheilus panthera was found in the available sources; data on its reproductive biology is sparse, which is common for narrow-range stream loaches that have attracted little research attention and essentially no aquarium interest. Nothing here should be assumed from related, better-studied genera without direct evidence.

Breeding

Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae are, as a rule, egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. There is no specific documentation of Oxynoemacheilus panthera being bred in captivity, and given its narrow range, cool-water requirements and lack of any presence in the aquarium trade, it should be assumed to be essentially unbred in home aquaria. Any keeper working with this species should treat its reproduction as an open question rather than rely on generalisations from other loaches.

Oxynoemacheilus panthera is not an established aquarium fish — it does not appear to be traded, and this account is written from a conservation and biological standpoint rather than as a stocking recommendation. Were it ever to be kept, its biology points clearly toward the needs shared by cool-water stone loaches: strong water flow, high dissolved oxygen, a gravel or stone substrate, and stable, cool subtropical temperatures around 61–75 °F rather than a standard heated tropical setup.

As with other near-scaleless loaches, any handling or medication would need care — full-strength treatments and copper-based medications are generally poorly tolerated by this group. Given its Endangered status and the pressures already on its wild population, any collection or trade interest in this species should be approached with particular caution.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Oxynoemacheilus panthera as Endangered (EN), reflecting a population loss of over 90% attributed to water abstraction and the drying of the streams and springs it depends on in the Damascus basin. As a narrow-range endemic tied to a small number of spring-fed watercourses in an arid region under heavy human water demand, it is acutely vulnerable to any further reduction in flow.

The species is confined to Syria, with its core range in the Nahr Barada and Nahr al-A'waj systems around Damascus. Regional instability and continued pressure on water resources in the area make its outlook precarious, and there is no aquarium trade to offset — or add to — the risks it already faces from habitat loss.
