Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus persa was described by the Austrian naturalist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1847, hence the parentheses around his name marking a change of genus since the original description. It has at times been indexed under the older, broader genus Barbatula (as Barbatula persa) in some FishBase records and older literature, part of the long-running reshuffling of the Nemacheilidae as the old wastebasket genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart through the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The Catalog of Fishes — the governing authority for valid names — places it in Oxynoemacheilus, the genus that now holds most of the small stone loaches of the Middle East and Anatolia.
Molecular work has clarified its place within that genus: DNA barcoding (COI) shows O. persa as genetically distinct from its congeners, most closely related to O. tongiorgii at a substantial 10.3% K2P sequence divergence — evidence of a long, isolated evolutionary history tied to its closed drainage. A junior synonym, O. farsicus, has also been recognized in the regional loach literature, underscoring how finely subdivided — and still actively revised — this part of the family tree remains. The name Barbatula farsica is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate stone loach with a body of roughly even depth along its length rather than a strongly arched back. Live specimens run to around 2.5 in standard length, modest even by nemacheilid standards. The flanks carry a distinctive pattern of dark-brown blotching: 7–8 blotches along the dorsal midline and 10–11 along the flank, set against a pale ground colour, with a forked caudal fin. Fin ray counts are typical for the genus (dorsal III–IV,7–8; anal III–IV,5).
Like many of its Nemacheilidae relatives, O. persa carries the family's small erectile suborbital spine and the fine, largely embedded scalation typical of stone loaches — skin that is functionally close to naked and, as in other loaches, a point of real sensitivity to medication. A karyotype study found a diploid chromosome number of 2n=50 (20 metacentric + 22 submetacentric + 8 subtelocentric chromosomes, NF=90), one of the more thoroughly documented genomes among the small Iranian stream loaches.
Habitat
Oxynoemacheilus persa is endemic to a single, closed hydrological system in southern Iran: the endorheic and exorheic Kor River basin, together with the neighbouring Mond River drainage. It has been recorded at high frequency at sites such as the Kor River and its tributary the Polvar River, and from collection points including Qare Aqaj. Within that basin it is one of nine primary freshwater species recorded (seven of them endemic), a reflection of how isolated and biologically distinct this drainage is.
It lives in fast-flowing, clear streams over gravel and stony substrata — the classic stone-loach habitat, an obligate flowing-water specialist rather than a still-water fish. Precise temperature and pH data have not been captured for this species; as an upland Iranian stream fish it likely experiences cool, well-oxygenated water in the neighbourhood of 59–68 °F over neutral to slightly alkaline limestone-influenced chemistry, but this should be read as an informed estimate rather than a measured range.
Feeding
As a nemacheilid stone loach, O. persa is a benthic micro-predator, foraging over the streambed for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans in particular — alongside biofilm and detritus picked from gravel and stones. This matches the feeding ecology reported across the genus: active, opportunistic bottom-feeding in fast water rather than grazing on algae in the manner of the unrelated hillstream loaches.
No aquarium-specific feeding data exists for this species, since it is not established in the hobby. Based on its wild diet and its family's general behaviour, a keeper attempting it would expect it to take small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) and sinking pellets readily, while showing little interest in floating flake.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Oxynoemacheilus persa in the literature reviewed here. What is known is genetic rather than behavioural: strong phylogeographic structure has been found across its range, with roughly 42% of genetic variation partitioned among the Kor and Mond drainages, indicating that populations in the two basins are substantially isolated from one another and have limited natural gene flow — a pattern typical of small stream fish confined to separate, unconnected river systems.
In the absence of direct observation, its reproductive biology should be inferred cautiously from its family: Nemacheilidae as a group are egg-scatterers, without pairing behaviour or nest-building, spawning being triggered by seasonal flow and temperature cues in their home streams rather than by any elaborate courtship.
Breeding
Following the general pattern for stone and brook loaches, Oxynoemacheilus persa is best understood as an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward. This is consistent with its family's biology across the board and with the absence of any home-aquarium spawning reports for this species specifically.
It should be stated plainly that this species is not established in the aquarium trade and has, as far as the available literature shows, never been bred in captivity. Its breeding biology is genuinely data-sparse: what exists in the scientific record concerns genetics and conservation, not reproduction, and no hobbyist accounts of spawning it were found.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus persa is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby — it does not appear in the trade, and no dedicated care profiles exist. Any care advice here is therefore extrapolated from its wild ecology and its family's general requirements rather than from direct experience, and should be read with that caveat. Like other stone loaches it would need cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or stone substrate — a powerhead or strong filter outflow to replicate stream current, rather than a calm, still community tank.
As with other Nemacheilidae, its fine scalation and near-naked skin mean it would likely be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, a general precaution worth carrying over from better-known relatives even without species-specific data. Given its 2.5 in adult size and current absence from the trade, this remains a fish for the specialist or the collector working directly with Iranian endemic stream fish, not a species available through ordinary retail channels.
Conservation
Oxynoemacheilus persa is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, reflecting its high frequency of occurrence throughout the Kor River basin despite the pressures the basin faces. That LC rating sits alongside real, documented threats: habitat destruction, water diversion, drought, and pollution from agriculture and aquaculture have all been recorded affecting the Kor and Helleh/Mond basin system that this species and its endemic neighbours depend on.
Because the species is confined to a single closed drainage system with strong genetic differentiation between its Kor and Mond populations, it is more vulnerable to local disruption than its LC status alone might suggest — the loss or fragmentation of either basin's flow regime would fall on a population that cannot simply be replenished from elsewhere. There is no aquarium trade in this species, so unlike many popular loaches it faces no collection pressure; its conservation story is purely one of water management and habitat integrity in its home rivers.
