Taxonomy & naming
Paracobitis persa was described in 2014 by Jörg Freyhof, Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Golnaz Sayyadzadeh and Matthias Geiger as part of a broader taxonomic review of the crested loaches of the genus Paracobitis from Iran and Iraq, a paper that split the region's stone-loach fauna into several new species. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which the Catalog of Fishes — the authority followed here — recognises as distinct from the older, broader Balitoridae/Nemacheilidae groupings used in some older literature.
The genus Paracobitis is endemic to Iran and Iraq and, per the same review, comprises around nine recognized species within Iran alone, several of them, like P. persa, restricted to single river basins or even single springs. Paracobitis persa was distinguished from its close relative P. malapterura on anatomical grounds — a shallower caudal adipose crest and differences in the proportions of the anterior nostril tube — the kind of fine-grained character work typical of Nemacheilidae taxonomy, where many superficially similar populations turn out to be distinct species once examined closely.
Morphology
Paracobitis persa is a small, elongated stone loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 3 in standard length in males — modest even by the standards of this already-small family. Like other true loaches it has a slender, cylindrical body suited to holding position in current, a benthic posture, and the near-scaleless skin typical of Nemacheilidae, which leaves it more exposed to disease and medication than a fully-scaled fish.
Detailed morphological description beyond the diagnostic features used to separate it from P. malapterura has not been captured here, and specific data on colouration, barbel count and fin structure for this species individually is sparse in the available sources — consistent with a fish described only a decade ago from a very restricted range and rarely examined outside the original taxonomic literature.
Habitat
This species is known only from the Kor River basin in Fars province, southern Iran, specifically the Maloosjan spring (its type locality, east of the town of Beiza) and the Sivand River. Both are cool, clear, fast-flowing limestone spring and stream habitats, typical of the subtropical spring and river systems that support much of Iran's endemic Nemacheilidae fauna.
Water here runs clear and well-oxygenated over the kind of gravel-and-rock substrate that stone loaches favour, with neutral to slightly alkaline chemistry typical of limestone-fed springs in the region. This is a genuinely narrow-range endemic — its entire known distribution covers a handful of connected sites in a single river basin, which is itself a conservation-relevant fact rather than an incidental detail.
Feeding
Paracobitis persa is a benthic micro-predator, foraging along the stream and spring bed for small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans — the standard diet of Nemacheilidae stone loaches, consistent with its recorded low trophic level typical of a benthivore rather than a specialist hunter of larger prey. Detailed dietary study specific to this species has not been located, so this picture is inferred from its family, feeding guild and habitat rather than from direct field or gut-content data on P. persa itself.
In practice this means a fish built to pick invertebrates from stone and gravel in moving water, not one adapted to sifting soft sediment or grazing algae — a bottom-hunting micro-predator of clear, cool, fast streams.
Mating
No description of courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism specific to Paracobitis persa has been captured in the available sources. Data on reproduction in this recently described, narrow-range species is sparse, which is unsurprising given how little field or aquarium observation exists for it.
What can be said follows from its family: Nemacheilidae stone and brook loaches are, as a rule, egg-scattering fish with no parental investment beyond releasing eggs into flowing water, and there is no indication that P. persa departs from that pattern.
Breeding
As with other stone and brook loaches, Paracobitis persa is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward — the typical Nemacheilidae reproductive mode. There is no record of this species being bred in captivity, and given its very recent description and extremely restricted natural range, that is not surprising.
This is, honestly, one of the many loach species for which the correct answer is that essentially nothing is known about captive reproduction. It should not be assumed to nest, guard eggs, or brood young — those are not documented behaviours in this genus or family.
In the aquarium
Paracobitis persa is not an established aquarium fish; no husbandry data specific to this species has been located, and it does not appear to be present in the ornamental trade in any documented way. What can be reasonably inferred from its habitat and family is that any prospective care would need to replicate cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or stone substrate — not the warm, still conditions suited to many tropical community loaches.
As with other Nemacheilidae, its near-scaleless skin would make it sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, a point worth flagging for any keeper who might one day encounter this or a closely related Iranian stone loach. Given the total absence of trade or husbandry records, the honest position is that this species should be treated as effectively unavailable and unstudied in the aquarium context — a wild endemic best appreciated through its taxonomic and conservation story rather than through captive care.
Conservation
Paracobitis persa has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. It is a genuine narrow-range endemic, known only from the Maloosjan spring and Sivand River in the Kor basin of Fars province, Iran — a footprint of a handful of connected sites rather than a wide river system. A regional review of Iran's endemic loaches (Folia Zoologica) documents that Paracobitis species across the country, as a group, face habitat loss and degradation, river damming, drought, and water extraction for irrigation and other uses, along with pollution — pressures that apply with particular force to single-basin endemics like this one.
Without a formal IUCN assessment its risk category is officially unknown, but the combination of an extremely restricted range, spring-dependent habitat and documented regional threats to congeners makes this a species worth conservation attention even in the absence of a status label. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade pressure on this species; its risks, such as they are, are purely habitat-driven.
