Pangio bitaimac, the Sumatran Neon Loach, is a recently described kuhli loach from the Batang Hari drainage of Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. Formally named in 2009 by Heok Hee Tan and Maurice Kottelat, it is distinguished within the genus by a dark purplish body with a vivid blue metallic sheen and reaches roughly 3.5 in in standard length — large for a Pangio. Like all kuhli loaches it is an eel-shaped, near-scaleless, nocturnal burrower that sifts the substrate for small invertebrates, requires fine soft sand and dense cover, and thrives only in the company of its own kind. It is seldom bred in captivity, and the trade is supplied almost entirely by wild-collected fish from Sumatran streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio bitaimac was described in 2009 by Heok Hee Tan and Maurice Kottelat from specimens collected in the Batang Hari drainage of Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia; the holotype measures 3 in standard length and was taken from Sungai Alai, a tributary of the Batang Hari system. The species belongs to the genus Pangio, placed in the family Cobitidae and the superfamily Cobitoidea. The Catalog of Fishes lists the current valid combination as Pangio bitaimac Tan & Kottelat, 2009, without parentheses, as the species was described directly into its current genus.

The genus Pangio contains the kuhli and related eel-loaches of mainland and island Southeast Asia; historically many were placed in Acanthophthalmus, a name now treated as a synonym of Pangio. Within the genus, P. bitaimac is distinguished by its colour pattern and proportions, including two pairs of barbels on the upper jaw noted in the original description. GBIF lists the species as a valid name under family Cobitidae with authority Tan & Kottelat, 2009, consistent with FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes.

The species is relatively new to science and to the hobby — first described in 2009 and still infrequently encountered in trade. Little published research beyond the original description addresses its biology in detail.

Morphology

Pangio bitaimac is an eel-shaped loach with a slender, elongated, laterally compressed body typical of the genus. The coloration is striking: the body is dark purplish to brownish-black with a bright blue metallic sheen, setting it apart from the more warmly patterned species in the genus. This iridescence gives rise to the trade name Sumatran Neon Loach. FishBase records a maximum size of 3.5 in standard length, making it one of the larger Pangio species; Aquatic Arts trade notes suggest up to about 4–4.5 in total length in aquaria.

Like all Pangio, the body is near-scaleless — the skin is superficially smooth and highly permeable, which is both a sensory asset and a vulnerability to dissolved chemicals and pathogens. Beneath each eye lies a small erectile suborbital spine, as in other cobitid loaches; this spine can be raised in defence and can snag fine-mesh nets. The head is slightly pointed, with a subterminal mouth adapted to working the substrate. Two pairs of barbels are present on the upper jaw.

Habitat

The Sumatran Neon Loach is endemic to the Batang Hari drainage of Jambi Province, Sumatra, Indonesia — a large river system flowing to the east coast of Sumatra that drains lowland and foothill forest. The type locality is Sungai Alai, a tributary stream of that system. FishBase categorises the species as a freshwater demersal fish of tropical streams; it is reported as facultatively air-breathing, a trait shared with other cobitid loaches that live in warm, often oxygen-variable waters.

The broader habitat context — a Sumatran lowland river tributary — indicates warm, soft, slightly to moderately acidic water running over fine sand and mud with abundant leaf litter, submerged wood and riparian vegetation. Flow is likely gentle to moderate in the stream habitats occupied. This is not a high-flow hillstream environment, nor a seasonally extreme system; it is a classic lowland Southeast Asian forest stream, warm year-round and soft-watered.

Feeding

Pangio bitaimac is a micro-omnivore and substrate sifter, as is characteristic of the genus. In the wild it forages nocturnally over and through the bottom sediment, picking out small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans — and organic detritus. It is not a surface or mid-water feeder and will not reliably rise for flake or floating foods.

In the aquarium it should be offered sinking foods: high-quality sinking pellets and micro-wafers, frozen or live bloodworms, tubifex, daphnia, and small Artemia. Because it is nocturnal and often reclusive during the day, it is easily underfed when tankmates claim food before lights go out. The best practice is to feed a portion of sinking food at lights-out, when the loaches become active and begin working the substrate. A varied diet maintains condition in what is still a thinly studied and infrequently kept species.

Mating

Sexing Pangio bitaimac in the aquarium is not documented in the available literature, and no reliable external criteria have been described for this species. By analogy with better-studied Pangio, mature females may appear plumper across the abdomen when in spawning condition; males tend to remain slimmer. Otherwise the sexes appear externally similar, and confident sexing of individual fish is difficult.

No accounts of observed courtship or pre-spawning behaviour in P. bitaimac are available in the cache or published hobby literature. Being a seldom-kept and recently described species, it has not attracted detailed behavioural study. As with other kuhli loaches, triggering any reproductive behaviour in captivity would likely require a large, mature, heavily planted tank housing a sizable group and possibly seasonal simulation of water condition changes.

Breeding

Pangio bitaimac is very rarely if ever bred in home aquaria, consistent with the broader pattern for kuhli loaches. What is known of Pangio reproduction in captivity comes largely from better-studied congeners: kuhli loaches are egg-scatterers that deposit small, greenish, adhesive eggs among the roots of floating plants or among fine-leaved vegetation near the surface, with no parental care from either sex after spawning. Fry are tiny and require infusoria-grade first foods.

For this species specifically, no documented captive spawnings appear in the available literature or trade sources. The trade in P. bitaimac is supplied by wild-collected fish from Sumatran streams. Keepers should buy this fish as a long-term display and behavioural species, not with breeding expectations. Breeding mode is recorded as egg-scattering among plant roots with no parental care, based on genus-level knowledge; captive spawning of this species has not been confirmed.

In the aquarium

The Sumatran Neon Loach is a peaceful, shy, and sociable fish that benefits strongly from being kept in a group of six or more individuals. Single specimens or small groups are stressed and rarely seen; a proper-sized group settles into a more natural, active dynamic and is far more likely to emerge at feeding time and during subdued lighting. A well-shaded, well-planted aquarium of at least 20–25 US gal with a soft, fine sand substrate is the baseline — the fish must be able to burrow and push through substrate, and sharp gravel or coarse sand damages the delicate skin and barbels.

Because the body is near-scaleless, Pangio bitaimac is sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard fish treatments at full dose. At the same time, loaches are often among the first fish to develop ich (white spot disease), so they should be watched closely. When treatment is required, use a half-dose or a medication formulated for scaleless fish and remove any copper-containing products. Dense planting, floating cover such as Indian fern, driftwood and smooth stones all help the fish feel secure and reduce daytime hiding. Warm, soft, slightly acidic water matching the Sumatran lowland stream conditions — around 75–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, low hardness — is optimal. Feed sinking foods at lights-out to ensure the loaches are not outcompeted by day-active tankmates.

Conservation

Pangio bitaimac is listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2019, published in IUCN Red List version 2022.2). The Data Deficient designation reflects an absence of sufficient information on the species' population size, distribution breadth, trends, and threat severity to make an informed assessment — not a finding that the species is secure. As a narrow endemic known primarily from the Batang Hari drainage of Sumatra, it is potentially at risk from the pressures that affect lowland Sumatran freshwater systems broadly: deforestation and land conversion (particularly for oil palm and pulp plantations), watershed degradation, and sedimentation of streams from agriculture and logging.

FishBase notes that P. bitaimac is of no current commercial interest and is not in aquaculture, but trade sources do list it as available, suggesting low-level wild collection occurs. The species was only scientifically described in 2009 and has received little field study since. Further survey work on its range extent and abundance within the Batang Hari system would be needed before a substantive conservation assessment could be made.
