Paracobitis basharensis was described in 2014 by Jörg Freyhof, Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Golnaz Sayyadzadeh and Matthias Geiger in a revision of the crested loaches of the genus Paracobitis from Iran and Iraq, published in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. That paper described four new Paracobitis species in one stroke, of which basharensis was one, distinguishing them from their relatives on details of coloration, fin-ray counts and body proportions. The genus Paracobitis sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, and one whose genus-level boundaries (the old Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus complex, now split into Paracobitis, Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others) have been repeatedly reshuffled as regional revisions like this one work through the group.
The species epithet ties it directly to its only known locality, the Bashar River, underscoring how narrowly defined this fish is: it was named for the single watercourse it was collected from rather than for any distinguishing feature of its own anatomy. As a species described only in 2014, it has not accumulated the decades of subsequent taxonomic comment that older, wider-ranging loaches have, and the Catalog of Fishes lists it as currently valid under this combination.
Morphology
Paracobitis basharensis is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, reported to reach only about 2.5 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a family built from small stream fish. Like other stone and brook loaches it has an elongate, only lightly compressed body, a subterminal mouth suited to picking food from the substrate, and small barbels around the mouth for feeling out prey in the streambed. Nemacheilids of this kind are typically near-scaleless or very finely scaled, which matters for how sensitive they are to water quality and medication.
