Taxonomy & naming
Paracobitis hircanica was formally described in 2015 by Hamed Mousavi-Sabet, Golnaz Sayyadzadeh, Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Soheil Eagderi, Rahman Patimar and Jörg Freyhof, part of a wave of nemacheilid descriptions from Iran and the wider Caspian basin in the 2010s as the region's stream loaches were surveyed more closely. It sits in the genus Paracobitis, a group of stone loaches distributed across Iran, the Caucasus and Central Asia, within the family Nemacheilidae — the true "brook loach" family, and by species count the largest of all the loach families.
The species epithet hircanica refers to Hyrcania, the ancient name for the forested region along the southern Caspian coast of Iran, and the species is accordingly known in English as the Hyrcanian (or Hircan) crested loach. A companion paper on its osteology, published shortly after the original description, examined the skeletal anatomy in detail — a sign of the careful taxonomic attention typically given to newly split Paracobitis species, since the genus and its relatives have been repeatedly reshuffled as material from the region is studied.
Morphology
Paracobitis hircanica is a small, elongate stone loach reaching around 4 in in total length. Like other Nemacheilidae it lacks true body scales, giving it smooth, near-naked skin — a trait that matters for its sensitivity to medication as much as for its taxonomy. The flanks carry a fine marbled or vermiculate brown pattern over a paler ground colour, a camouflage suited to lying against gravel and cobble in clear water, and the caudal fin is moderately to deeply emarginate (notched), with dark-brown rays edged in hyaline (clear) margins at the front and tip.
As in related stone loaches, the eyes sit high on the head and the mouth is small and subterminal, adapted for picking food from the streambed rather than for open-water feeding. The original description distinguishes P. hircanica from its close relatives chiefly by this combination of scale-less body, fin shape and colour pattern; beyond that, detailed morphometric data for the species remains limited to the type description and osteological follow-up.
Habitat
The species is known from the Gorgan River basin in the Hyrcanian region of northern Iran, on the southern side of the Caspian Sea — its type locality is the Zarrin-Gol stream, a small, fast-flowing tributary only about 2 metres wide, running over coarse gravel and boulder substrate with clear, semi-transparent water and no submerged vegetation. This is classic stone-loach habitat: cool, well-oxygenated, current-swept water tumbling off the Alborz foothills, with no still, silty or vegetated margins for the fish to hide in.
Because it is known only from this basin, Paracobitis hircanica is a genuine stream endemic, and its distribution should be understood as narrow rather than broadly Iranian. No detailed water-chemistry survey accompanies the description beyond the physical character of the type stream, so exact temperature and pH figures for the wild population are not published; what is documented is the fast current, coarse substrate and clarity of the water it inhabits.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Paracobitis hircanica has been published; FishBase records an estimated trophic level of about 2.7, inferred from body size and relatives rather than gut-content analysis. That places it as a low-level carnivore consistent with the family pattern: a benthic micro-predator that forages over gravel and cobble for small aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, rather than a grazer or detritivore.
In the absence of specific data, feeding ecology is best inferred from its close relatives and its stream habitat: a fast-flowing, gravel-bottomed stream of this kind typically supports a benthic invertebrate community — chironomid and mayfly larvae, small crustaceans — that would form the natural diet of a small nemacheilid sharing that water. This is a reasonable inference from habitat and family pattern, not a confirmed observation.
Mating
No published account describes courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism in Paracobitis hircanica specifically. A life-history study on the species, undertaken in the Zav stream in Golestan National Park in northern Iran, is indexed in the Iranian scientific literature, indicating that at least some population-biology research has been directed at this species, but the paper's detail was not accessible for this article.
What can be said follows from the family: Nemacheilidae as a whole are egg-scattering fish with no courtship display or pair-bonding behaviour beyond the brief act of spawning itself, and there is no evidence of any different reproductive strategy in Paracobitis. Data on this species' own mating behaviour remains sparse.
Breeding
As in other stone and brook loaches, Paracobitis hircanica almost certainly reproduces as an egg-scatterer: females release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, the eggs adhere to the substrate or sink into the interstitial spaces between stones, and there is no parental care of eggs or fry. This pattern is well documented across Nemacheilidae generally, including in the well-studied European stone loach Barbatula barbatula, but has not been specifically confirmed for P. hircanica.
The species is not established in the aquarium hobby, so there is no aquarium-spawning record to draw on. Given its narrow, single-basin distribution and lack of trade presence, it should be assumed rarely or never bred in captivity, consistent with the great majority of Nemacheilidae species.
In the aquarium
Paracobitis hircanica is not a trade species and is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby; there is no established husbandry record to draw on. Anyone attempting to keep it — or any similar small Paracobitis or nemacheilid stone loach — should extrapolate cautiously from the type-locality habitat: a cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, heavily oxygenated stream over coarse gravel and boulder, with clear water and no vegetation. That points toward a river-manifold or powerhead-driven high-flow setup with a gravel and rounded-stone substrate rather than a standard, calm community tank.
As a scaleless nemacheilid it would be expected to share the family's sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, and to be an early indicator of deteriorating water quality or parasite outbreaks — points that apply broadly across Nemacheilidae even without species-specific data. Given how little is documented about this fish, its size (around 4 in) and its narrow distribution, it is best regarded as a scientific-interest species rather than a hobby candidate at present.
Conservation
Paracobitis hircanica has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is therefore recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Its known distribution is narrow — the Gorgan River basin of Iran's Hyrcanian region on the southern Caspian coast — which is the profile of a range-restricted stream endemic, a category of fish that is often vulnerable to habitat degradation even without a formal assessment confirming it.
There is no evidence of aquarium-trade pressure on this species; it is not known to be collected or traded. The more relevant conservation context is regional: Hyrcanian streams draining into the Caspian Sea face pressure from water abstraction, pollution and habitat modification across northern Iran, and a single-basin endemic like P. hircanica would be exposed to any degradation of its specific stream system. A formal IUCN assessment would clarify its status; until then, Not Evaluated is the honest and accurate designation.
