Paracobitis abrishamchiani is a small stone loach described only in 2019 from the rivers of the southern Caspian Sea basin in Iran, and it remains one of the least-documented fish in this atlas. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family, whose members are typically bold little benthic hunters of cool, clear, fast-flowing streams. No aquarium trade or captive-care record exists for this species, and it has not yet been assessed by the IUCN — this profile is honest about that gap, drawing on the original description and on what is known of its close relative Paracobitis variegatus rather than guessing.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracobitis abrishamchiani was formally described in 2019 by Mousavi-Sabet, Vatandoust, Geiger and Freyhof in the journal Zootaxa (4545(3): 375–388), based on specimens from the Babol, Haraz, Siah, Tajan, Talar and Kashpal river drainages of the southern Caspian Sea basin in Iran. It sits in the genus Paracobitis, within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, spread widely across Eurasia.

The describing authors distinguished it from its closest relatives, P. hircanica and P. atrakensis, by a combination of characters: scales present on the flank posterior to the dorsal-fin origin, a colour pattern of widely spaced brown spots and blotches, and the shape of the posterior narial opening, which is roundish rather than slit-like. As with many recently split Nemacheilidae, older regional literature may still lump southern Caspian populations under a broader species concept; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current, valid combination Paracobitis abrishamchiani.

Morphology

Detailed morphometric data beyond the original description are not available, and no size or growth data have been published for wild or captive individuals of this species. As a member of Nemacheilidae it can be expected to show the family's typical build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a small ventral mouth suited to picking food from the substrate, and — where present in the genus — an erectile suborbital spine used defensively.

Like other true loaches it is likely near-scaleless or lightly scaled along most of the body, a trait the description specifically addresses (noting scales present behind the dorsal-fin origin, a diagnostic detail versus its closest relatives). This thin, exposed skin is characteristic of the family and matters for husbandry more than for identification, since it makes such fish unusually sensitive to certain medications. Colouration is described as widely spaced brown spots and blotches over the body, a more open, sparser pattern than in its closest congeners.

Habitat

Paracobitis abrishamchiani is endemic to the southern Caspian Sea basin of Iran, known from the Babol, Haraz, Siah, Tajan, Talar and Kashpal river drainages. These are cool, clear, fast-flowing river systems draining the northern slopes of the Alborz Mountains toward the Caspian Sea — a region that hosts a number of narrowly distributed, recently split Nemacheilidae and Cobitidae endemics.

Regional studies of related southern Caspian loaches describe this drainage system as oligotrophic, high-oxygen, fast-flowing water over stony or gravel substrate — habitat typical of cool-stream specialists rather than of still, warm lowland water. No site-specific temperature or pH readings have been published for this species; the water chemistry given in this profile is inferred from its congener P. variegatus and from the general character of southern Caspian stream habitat, not measured directly at a Paracobitis abrishamchiani locality.

Feeding

No diet study has been published for this species. As a small benthic member of Nemacheilidae from fast, clear, cool streams, it can be expected to function as a micro-predator, picking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic fauna — from among stones and gravel, in keeping with the diet documented for its congener P. variegatus and for stone loaches generally.

In the absence of aquarium records, feeding recommendations here are inferred rather than field-confirmed: sinking foods that reach the bottom — small live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm, mysis or brine shrimp, plus quality sinking pellets — would suit its presumed micro-predator habits far better than flake left to drift in open water.

Mating

No sexual dimorphism has been described for Paracobitis abrishamchiani, and no observations of courtship or spawning behaviour — wild or captive — have been published. Data are simply sparse for a species described as recently as 2019 from a handful of stream drainages with no aquarium history.

For stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) generally, spawning is understood to be tied to fast-flowing water over clean gravel, without the elaborate migratory or seasonal flood cues documented in some botiid loaches. In the absence of species-specific data, that general pattern is the most honest basis for expectation here, rather than any confirmed account for this fish.

Breeding

There is no record of Paracobitis abrishamchiani being bred in captivity, and it does not appear to be present in the aquarium trade at all. Based on the pattern documented across Nemacheilidae, a stone or brook loach of this kind would be expected to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care given to eggs or fry afterward.

This is a case where honesty matters more than narrative: nothing about this species' reproduction has actually been observed and reported, and the mode described here is inferred from its family rather than confirmed. It should not be assumed bred, guarded, or mouthbrooded — those patterns belong to other fish groups entirely, not to Nemacheilidae.

In the aquarium

Paracobitis abrishamchiani has no established aquarium presence — it is not known to be traded, and no keeper accounts exist. Any care guidance here is therefore extrapolated from its congener Paracobitis variegatus and from the needs of cool-stream Nemacheilidae generally, and should be read as a starting point rather than a tested formula.

On that basis, a keeper attempting this species (or, more realistically, a similar undescribed or newly imported southern Caspian Paracobitis) should plan for cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated water with strong current and turnover, a gravel or stone substrate with hiding spaces, and small sinking invertebrate-based foods. As with other thin-skinned, lightly scaled loaches, caution with copper-based and full-strength medications is prudent even without species-specific confirmation, since sensitivity to such treatments is broadly characteristic of the family.

Conservation

Paracobitis abrishamchiani has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. Given how recently it was described (2019) and its restricted range across a handful of southern Caspian river drainages in Iran, a formal assessment would be valuable but has not yet been carried out.

As a narrow-range stream endemic, it shares the general vulnerability profile of many southern Caspian basin fishes: dependence on a small number of drainages subject to water abstraction, pollution and habitat modification pressures common across northern Iran. With no population data, no trade record, and no assessment, the responsible position is to record the gap rather than assign a status the evidence does not support.
