Taxonomy & naming
Paracobitis hagiangensis was described by Nguyen in 2005, with the species epithet referring to Ha Giang, the mountainous province in far northern Vietnam where the type material was collected. It sits in the genus Paracobitis, within the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family of true loaches and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled at the genus level as regional faunas are revised.
The taxonomic picture for this species is unsettled. A 2014 paper addressing taxonomical issues in Vietnamese Nemacheilidae (published in Zoological Research) revisited the group Paracobitis hagiangensis belongs to, and FishBase notes that the species is now considered by some authors to be a synonym of Schistura caudofurca. We keep the name Paracobitis hagiangensis here rather than pre-empt a formal resolution, but readers should know the combination is contested — a common situation in this fast-splitting corner of Cobitoidea, and one more reason the species is so poorly documented outside the primary literature.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Paracobitis hagiangensis has the classic stone-loach build: an elongated, subcylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to gripping the substrate in current, and a small, downturned mouth ringed with barbels for feeling out food among stones. Like its relatives it likely carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of many loaches in this broader group, and its skin is effectively naked — nemacheilid scales, where present, are minute and deeply embedded — which makes the group generally sensitive to medication and to poor water quality.
Detailed morphometric data, colour pattern and maximum size for this species are not established in the sources available to us. FishBase records no verified length figure. Given the small size typical of Paracobitis and other stream-dwelling Nemacheilidae, a modest adult size in the range of a few centimetres would be consistent with the genus, but we do not have a confirmed figure for this species and prefer to say so rather than estimate.
Habitat
Paracobitis hagiangensis is known only from Ha Giang province, in the far north of Vietnam near the Chinese border — a region of steep karst mountains and fast, clear, rocky streams. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, demersal fish of tropical latitudes, consistent with a life spent on the bottom of flowing water rather than in open midwater.
The broader Nemacheilidae in this part of northern Vietnam and southern China typically live in cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing hill and mountain streams over stone, gravel and sand, and there is no indication this species departs from that pattern. Specific water chemistry, temperature range and depth data have not been published for this species, so we do not assign figures we cannot source — this is a genuinely data-sparse, single-region endemic.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Paracobitis hagiangensis is available. FishBase lists a trophic level of 2.7 for the species, a figure consistent with an omnivorous to mildly carnivorous diet that leans on small invertebrates and organic material picked from the stream bed — the typical feeding style of stone and brook loaches, which forage over gravel and among stones for insect larvae, small crustaceans and detritus rather than taking food from the water column.
Without aquarium or field observation to draw on, we do not go further than this trophic-level inference. Any keeper encountering a fish sold under this name should assume a bottom-feeding micro-predator diet of small live, frozen or sinking foods, in line with its nemacheilid relatives, rather than a flake-eating species.
Mating
No courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism has been documented for Paracobitis hagiangensis in the sources available to us. Stone and brook loaches in general show little external dimorphism outside the breeding season, and most Nemacheilidae have never been observed spawning in captivity, let alone described in the wild in detail — small, single-stream endemics like this one are especially unlikely to have been studied this closely.
We do not speculate on reproductive timing, migration or breeding cues for this species; nothing in the cache supports it, and inventing detail here would misrepresent how little is actually known.
Breeding
There is no record of Paracobitis hagiangensis being bred in the aquarium, and it has essentially no presence in the hobby to begin with. Based on the general pattern for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), the expected mode is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — but this is an inference from the family, not an observation of this species.
Parental care in this group, where it has been documented at all, is absent: eggs are scattered and left to develop unguarded among the substrate. For Paracobitis hagiangensis specifically, breeding data is sparse to non-existent, and it should be treated as effectively unbred and unknown in captivity.
In the aquarium
Paracobitis hagiangensis is not established in the aquarium trade, and we are not aware of any documented history of it being kept or sold as an ornamental fish. This profile exists to record the species accurately, not to encourage its collection from a single known locality in northern Vietnam.
If a fish under this name were ever encountered, the safe general approach for a small nemacheilid stone loach would be to provide cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a stone and gravel substrate, and to treat it with the same medication caution given to other scaleless loaches — avoid copper-based treatments and use reduced doses, since the group is broadly sensitive. But absent real husbandry data for this species, that is general family guidance, not a verified care record.
Conservation
Paracobitis hagiangensis is listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, assessed 30 August 2010 — the assessment records that there is insufficient information available to evaluate its conservation status. FishBase corroborates the Data Deficient status and confirms the species is known only from Vietnam.
A single-province endemic restricted to streams in Ha Giang, on the Vietnam–China border, is inherently vulnerable to habitat pressure from agriculture, deforestation and stream modification in that region, even though no formal assessment has quantified a threat. Given the taxonomic uncertainty around this name — with some work treating it as a synonym of Schistura caudofurca — its conservation status may in practice be tied to whichever valid name eventually prevails. We record Data Deficient rather than guess at a firmer category.
