Paracobitis maolanensis is a small, obscure stone loach known only from cave and karst waters around Maolan in Guizhou Province, southern China. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest and least-known loach family, and it is a good example of how little the hobby or the scientific literature knows about most of its members: this is a data-sparse, single-region endemic rather than an aquarium staple. Some later work has treated the species under the genus Troglonectes, reflecting the cave-loach lineage's history of shifting placement among Paracobitis, Homatula and Troglonectes; it is kept here under its originally described combination, Paracobitis maolanensis. Like its nemacheilid relatives it is a bottom-dwelling micro-predator of cool, clear, fast-moving water, essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and unassessed for conservation status.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracobitis maolanensis was described in 2006 by Li, Ran & Chen from material collected around Maolan, a karst region of Guizhou Province in southern China renowned for its cave systems. It was placed in Paracobitis, a genus of stone loaches within the family Nemacheilidae, the true loaches — by far the largest loach family and one whose generic boundaries have been repeatedly reshuffled as molecular work refines the old, broadly defined genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus.

This species' own placement has moved since its description: later taxonomic treatments have associated cave-adapted members of this species group with the genus Troglonectes, and it has also been referenced under Homatula in some regional literature. This kind of back-and-forth is typical of Chinese cave and stream nemacheilids, where troglomorphic (cave-adapted) lineages are still being sorted out. Absent a confirmed update in the primary literature reviewed here, this profile keeps the species under its originally published combination, Paracobitis maolanensis; a hobbyist or researcher encountering it as "Troglonectes maolanensis" is looking at the same fish.

Morphology

Paracobitis maolanensis shows the slender, cylindrical body plan typical of Nemacheilidae — a small, elongate stone loach built for holding position on the bottom of moving water rather than for open swimming. Cave-associated populations of this species group show troglomorphic features: reduced or degenerated eyes, often reduced to small dark spots of pigment rather than functional eyes, and a pale, understated body colour consistent with life away from light. As in other nemacheilids the skin is effectively naked, carrying at most tiny embedded scales, which makes the fish sensitive to poor water quality and to medication.

Detailed morphometric data (fin ray counts, precise adult size) were not available in the sources reviewed for this profile; like many single-locality nemacheilids described from a handful of specimens, much of its anatomy beyond the original description remains sparsely documented. It should be treated as a small species, in keeping with the genus, rather than assigned an unverified maximum length.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Maolan area of Guizhou Province, China, a limestone karst landscape riddled with caves and underground streams. Cave-dwelling nemacheilids from this region typically live in cool, clear, well-oxygenated water — either flowing cave streams or the spring-fed brooks that drain karst systems — over rock, gravel and sand substrates with little or no light.

This is not a warm, still, blackwater habitat; karst cave and spring systems in this part of southern China run cool to moderate and highly oxygenated, and any aquarium approximation should follow that rather than defaulting to a tropical community-tank temperature. Because the species is known from such a narrow area, its habitat requirements should be considered specialised and its tolerance for warm, stagnant or turbid water unproven.

Feeding

As a nemacheilid stone loach, Paracobitis maolanensis is presumed to be a benthic micro-predator in the manner of its relatives, picking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — from gravel and rock surfaces in flowing water. Cave populations of related species are thought to rely substantially on organic material and invertebrates washed into cave systems, given the absence of light-driven primary production underground.

No species-specific dietary data were found in the sources reviewed. In captivity, a fish of this type would be expected to take small sinking live and frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates) readily, and to show little interest in flake or foods that stay at the surface.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Paracobitis maolanensis in the sources reviewed for this profile. Nemacheilid stone loaches in general show no strong external sexual dimorphism and are not known for elaborate courtship; where breeding has been observed in the family, it typically involves brief pairing over gravel in fast-flowing water rather than extended pair-bonding or display.

Given the species' cave habitat and its status as effectively unknown outside a handful of scientific collections, nothing specific can be said about its reproductive timing or triggers, and none should be assumed.

Breeding

There is no record of Paracobitis maolanensis being bred in the aquarium, and given its narrow cave-endemic range and total absence from the ornamental trade, this is unsurprising. Like other stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae, the group's typical reproductive mode is egg-scattering over gravel in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — not the cave-guarding male behaviour seen in some gobies, and not mouthbrooding.

Data on this species are sparse enough that its breeding biology should be considered essentially unknown; the honest statement is that it is not bred in captivity and has not been studied in the wild beyond its original description and subsequent taxonomic notes.

In the aquarium

Paracobitis maolanensis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it does not appear in the ornamental trade, and keeping it would mean working from a wild-collected, range-restricted, cave-dwelling population rather than an established hobby stock. Nothing in the sources reviewed suggests it has ever been maintained in a home aquarium.

Were it ever to appear in captivity, the general nemacheilid playbook would apply: cool, clean, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water over a hard substrate, careful attention to water quality given its scaleless skin, and caution with medications and copper-based treatments, to which naked-skinned loaches are notably sensitive. Given its cave origins, low light would likely also be appropriate. None of this has been tested for the species itself, and any care recommendation beyond these generic points would be guesswork.

Conservation

Paracobitis maolanensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a species known only from a small karst cave system in Guizhou Province, it fits the profile of many Chinese cave and stream nemacheilids: a narrow-range endemic that has likely never been formally evaluated for extinction risk despite being inherently vulnerable to habitat disturbance.

Cave and karst freshwater systems in southern China face pressure from water extraction, pollution and habitat modification associated with regional development, and any species restricted to a single such system should be considered potentially at risk even without a formal assessment. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; its absence from the trade is the more notable point.
