Taxonomy & naming
Paracobitis molavii was formally described in 2014 by Jörg Freyhof, Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Hamid Reza Sayyadzadeh and Matthias Geiger, as part of a wider taxonomic review of the crested loaches of the genus Paracobitis from Iran and Iraq that also introduced several other new species. The genus Paracobitis sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, whose classification has been extensively reshuffled over the past two decades as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart using both morphology and genetics; Paracobitis itself is characterised by the low, fleshy dorsal adipose crest that gives the group its "crested loach" name.
The species epithet molavii honours Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi, the 13th-century Persian poet and mystic better known in the West as Rumi (Molavi in Persian). The Catalog of Fishes lists Paracobitis molavii as the currently valid combination, and the species has no earlier synonyms to speak of — it was new to science at description rather than a renamed older taxon.
Morphology
Paracobitis molavii is a small, elongate loach reaching only about 3 in in total length, well within the modest size range typical of Nemacheilidae. In the original review it was distinguished from its congeners in the Iran–Iraq Paracobitis group by a combination of characters including a truncate (rather than rounded or emarginate) caudal fin, a comparatively stout body, and a dorsal-fin origin positioned in front of the pelvic-fin origin — the kind of fine morphometric detail that typically separates closely related stream loaches more than any dramatic difference in colour pattern.
As a member of the genus Paracobitis, it carries the low adipose crest along the back that gives the crested loaches their name, and like other nemacheilids it has small, close-set eyes, a subterminal mouth suited to bottom-feeding, and the fine, deeply embedded near-scaleless skin typical of the family — a feature that matters for medication sensitivity wherever the fish is kept. Whether it possesses the erectile suborbital spine seen in some other loach lineages is not detailed in the available sources, and no reliable claim is made here beyond what has been documented.
Habitat
The species is known from the Little Zab River in Iran and the upper Sirwan (Kurdish) River drainage spanning Iran and Iraq, both part of the greater Tigris catchment in the Zagros Mountains region of the Middle East. As with other loaches, the near-scaleless skin typical of the family suggests caution with copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, though this has not been verified for the species specifically. Given the complete absence of established husbandry data, the responsible position is to say plainly that appropriate aquarium care for this species has not been documented, rather than to improvise detailed stocking or tank-size recommendations.
