Taxonomy & naming
Paracobitis phongthoensis was described by Nguyen in 2005 from a single holotype, 2.5 in SL, collected at Nam So in Phong Tho district, Lai Chau Province, northern Vietnam — the source of its species epithet. The holotype was later lost during examination, which has made independent verification of the original description difficult.
Its placement has been debated. A taxonomic review of Vietnamese freshwater fishes (published in a peer-reviewed paper indexed on PubMed Central) noted that the type specimen lacks both a rounded caudal fin and an adipose crest, features that argue against the genus Homatula and point instead toward Schistura. Separately, Kottelat's 2012 review of the region's fishes treated Paracobitis phongthoensis as a junior synonym of Schistura caudofurca. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for valid names, and pending that resolution this profile keeps the original combination, Paracobitis phongthoensis, while flagging the synonymy for readers who may encounter the fish under either name.
It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with many hundreds of species distributed across Eurasia, most of them small, narrow-range stream fish like this one.
Morphology
The original description records a single specimen of 2.5 in standard length, placing this species among the smaller nemacheilids. Its most distinctive feature is its bar pattern: the holotype carried thirteen dark bars along the flank, less conspicuous toward the front of the body, with six bars behind the dorsal fin that interconnect ventrally — a pattern the describing paper noted had not previously been recorded in any congener.
Beyond the bar pattern and body length, published morphological detail is limited to a single type specimen that is no longer available for re-examination, so comparative measurements and photographs are not established. Like other nemacheilids it can be expected to share the family's general build: an elongate, near-scaleless body suited to holding position in current, though this has not been separately confirmed for the species.
Habitat
The type locality, Nam So in Phong Tho district, Lai Chau Province, is a stream in northern Vietnam's Red River drainage, a region of moderate to fast-flowing water running over gravel and rock substrate — the typical habitat of Nemacheilidae. Records associated with the species (and with the Schistura caudofurca population it may represent) extend the range through the wider Red River system and into adjacent Lao tributaries, including the Nam Mat, Nam Xam and Nam Ma.
No water chemistry or temperature data were captured in the original description or in the subsequent literature reviewed here. Given the fast, gravel-and-rock stream habitat and the northern Vietnamese/Lao highland setting, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated flowing water is the reasonable expectation for this species, consistent with its nemacheilid relatives, but specific figures are not available and should not be guessed at.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for Paracobitis phongthoensis specifically. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are bottom-oriented micro-predators, foraging over gravel and rock in fast water for small aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, and this species can reasonably be expected to feed the same way given its habitat and family.
In the absence of species-specific feeding data, any aquarium care would need to follow the general nemacheilid pattern: small live and frozen foods and sinking preparations offered at the bottom, rather than flake fed at the surface.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour in this species. Only a single specimen has ever been formally documented, which by itself rules out any observation of mating behaviour in the type material, and no subsequent aquarium or field account was located.
Breeding
There is no breeding record for Paracobitis phongthoensis, in the wild or in the aquarium. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel in fast water with no parental care, and are rarely bred in captivity even when the species is otherwise well known — this genuinely obscure, single-specimen species is far outside anything that has been attempted. Breeding mode here is inferred from the family rather than observed directly, and should be read as such.
In the aquarium
Paracobitis phongthoensis has no established aquarium history; it does not appear to be present in the ornamental trade, and no husbandry account was found in the sources reviewed. As a fast-water nemacheilid, it would be expected to need the same things its relatives do — cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing water, a gravel or rock substrate, and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods rather than flake — but none of this has been confirmed for the species itself.
As with other loaches, a near-scaleless body should be assumed, which in this family generally means sensitivity to copper and to full-strength medications. Given the total absence of aquarium data, this species is best regarded as a scientific curiosity rather than a fish to plan a tank around.
Conservation
Paracobitis phongthoensis is assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known about its distribution, population and threats — appropriate for a species documented from a single, now-lost specimen. If the synonymy with Schistura caudofurca proposed by Kottelat (2012) is correct, the species' true range would extend across the wider Red River drainage in northern Vietnam and adjacent Laos, which would put it in a broader, better-known population than the type locality alone suggests; but under its own name the picture remains a single stream record.
No specific threats have been documented for this species. Its home region, the streams of Lai Chau Province and the wider Red River system, faces general pressures common to Southeast Asian freshwater habitats such as land-use change and water development, but no study links these to this particular fish. It is not known to enter the aquarium trade.
