Taxonomy & naming
Paracobitis posterodorsalus was described in 2006 by Ran, Li and Chen in the Journal of Guangxi Normal University, as a new blind cave-dwelling loach in the genus Paracobitis. The type locality is a cave system in Nandan County, Guangxi Province, China. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, comprising hundreds of small, mostly stream-dwelling species across Eurasia.
The genus Paracobitis sits within a group of Nemacheilidae that has repeatedly been reshuffled by taxonomists as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart; species now placed in Paracobitis, Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula were once lumped together under those older names. As with much of this family, the placement of individual species is periodically revised, but Paracobitis posterodorsalus has not been the subject of any documented reclassification since its description.
Morphology
This is a small loach, reaching roughly 2–2.5 in in standard length. As a cave obligate it shows the classic troglomorphic package seen in blind cave fishes worldwide: reduced or non-functional eyes, adapted for a life spent entirely without light. Like other Nemacheilidae, it is an elongate, cylindrical, bottom-hugging fish built to hold position and forage in tight spaces between gravel and pebbles.
Detailed morphological data beyond the original description is sparse for this species — a common situation for narrow-range cave loaches that have never been the subject of a follow-up study. Many of its Nemacheilidae relatives carry a small erectile suborbital spine and near-scaleless skin, both typical family traits, though the cache and available literature do not confirm specifics for this particular species.
Habitat
Paracobitis posterodorsalus is known only from its type locality, a cave system in Nandan County, Guangxi Province, in southwestern China — a strictly subterranean, freshwater existence. Congeneric cave-dwelling Nemacheilidae inhabit cool, clear, well-oxygenated water, with one study of cave Nemacheilidae recording a mean cave water temperature around 13.5 degrees C and a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 8.0, typical for the family.
Unlike most of its stone-loach relatives, which are creatures of fast-flowing, oxygen-rich surface streams, this species does not appear tied to strong current — cave systems of this kind typically offer still to slow-moving water rather than the riffle habitat used by surface-dwelling Nemacheilidae. Its entire known range is a single cave, making it one of the most narrowly distributed loaches on record.
Feeding
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Paracobitis posterodorsalus is presumed to be a benthic micro-predator, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae and fine detritus from the substrate — the standard diet of stone and brook loaches generally. Cave ecosystems are typically food-poor relative to surface streams, so cave-adapted fishes of this kind often forage opportunistically on whatever organic material and small invertebrates wash into or persist within the system.
No species-specific feeding studies are available; this is inferred from the broader biology of cave-dwelling Nemacheilidae rather than direct observation of this species.
Mating
Nothing specific has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Paracobitis posterodorsalus. Data on reproduction in cave-restricted Nemacheilidae is generally very thin, since these are narrow-endemic species rarely studied in the field and essentially never encountered in captivity.
By analogy with the wider stone and brook loach family, egg-scattering with no pair-bonding or parental care is the presumed reproductive mode, but this has not been confirmed for this species and should be read as an informed inference rather than an observed fact.
Breeding
Like the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Paracobitis posterodorsalus is presumed to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care — the standard reproductive mode across stone and brook loaches, which broadcast eggs over gravel or among stones and leave them and the resulting larvae to develop unattended. There is no record of this species being bred in captivity.
Given that it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and its entire range is a single cave system, there is no realistic prospect of captive breeding data emerging outside of a dedicated research or conservation programme. The honest position is that its reproductive biology is data sparse.
In the aquarium
Paracobitis posterodorsalus is not a hobby fish. It is not established in the aquarium trade, and its combination of extreme habitat specialisation — a single cave, cool stable water, and a life spent without light — makes it entirely unsuitable for typical fishkeeping. Any specimen encountered outside its native cave would need cool water, stable chemistry and darkness or very dim lighting to have any chance of thriving, conditions far removed from a normal aquarium setup.
As with other near-scaleless Nemacheilidae, medication sensitivity should be assumed as a precaution even though it has not been specifically documented for this species. In practice, this is a fish to know about rather than to keep — a reminder of how specialised and fragile some loach lineages have become.
Conservation
Paracobitis posterodorsalus has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List. Given that it is known from a single cave system in Nandan County, Guangxi, it is inherently vulnerable to any disturbance of that one site — groundwater pollution, cave tourism, quarrying or changes in local hydrology could all threaten a population with nowhere else to go, though no specific threat assessment has been published.
There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species, so collecting pressure is not a documented concern; the greater risk, as with many single-cave endemics, is simply habitat disturbance at its one known locality. A formal IUCN assessment would be valuable given how restricted its range appears to be.
