Paracobitis vignai is a small stone loach known only from the Sistan basin — the Helmand River system that straddles southeastern Iran and Afghanistan — one of the more obscure and genuinely data-sparse members of the family Nemacheilidae. Reaching a modest 5.5 in, it is a scaleless, bottom-hugging fish of clear, fast-flowing desert-fringe streams, a habitat now under severe pressure from damming, irrigation and drought. Almost nothing has been published on its diet, breeding or precise water chemistry, and it has never been formally assessed by the IUCN — a fish that illustrates just how little is known about many of the world's stream-endemic loaches.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracobitis vignai was described by Traian Nalbant and Paolo Bianco in 1998, part of a wave of work in the late twentieth century that sorted out the stone loaches of the Middle East and Central Asia into the modern genus Paracobitis. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of species scattered from Europe to East Asia and packed with narrow-range stream endemics like this one.

Recent molecular and morphological work has revisited the species' relationship to Paracobitis rhadinaea, a close relative from the same general region, and found only minor differences between them — the kind of fine-grained taxonomic question that keeps coming up across this genus. For now the Catalog of Fishes maintains Paracobitis vignai as a distinct, valid species, and that is the combination used here.

Morphology

Paracobitis vignai is a typical stone loach in build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a slit-shaped posterior nostril, and skin that is essentially scaleless, a trait shared across the family and one with real consequences for how the fish should be handled and medicated in captivity. Diagnostic features include a deeply forked caudal fin and a well-developed adipose keel running along the top of the caudal peduncle, both used to distinguish it from closely related Sistan-basin species.

Like many nemacheilids it likely carries the small, erectile spine below the eye typical of the group, though detailed anatomical description of this feature in P. vignai specifically is not available in the sources reviewed here. Adults reach a maximum recorded length of about 5.5 in total length, making it a modestly sized loach by the standards of the family.

Habitat

This species is endemic to the Sistan basin — the Helmand River drainage of Sistan-va-Baluchistan Province in southeastern Iran, with a range that may extend into Afghanistan. The Helmand-Sistan freshwater ecoregion is a distinctive desert-fringe system where roughly 40 percent of the fish fauna is found nowhere else, and Paracobitis vignai is one of several endemic loaches recorded there alongside relatives such as P. rhadinaeus, P. boutanensis and P. ghazniensis.

It lives in clear, fast-flowing stream water with a demersal, bottom-oriented lifestyle and what published records describe as a high oxygen requirement — consistent with a fish adapted to well-aerated, moving water rather than still or stagnant habitat. Detailed temperature and pH data have not been published for this species; given the Sistan basin's subtropical, arid-region climate, conditions are likely cool-to-warm and fluctuate with the season, but this should be treated as an informed estimate rather than a measured fact.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Paracobitis vignai has been published. Based on the general ecology of the family Nemacheilidae — bottom-dwelling micro-predators of fast, clear streams — it is reasonable to presume the species forages on small benthic invertebrates and insect larvae, but this is an inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact for this fish specifically.

In the absence of species-specific data, a keeper should default to what works for stone loaches generally: small sinking live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and small crustaceans, offered at the bottom where the fish naturally forages, rather than flake intended for mid-water fish.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Paracobitis vignai. The species is poorly studied even in basic biology — one published threat assessment explicitly notes that its biology, distribution and population numbers are too poorly known to support a formal conservation evaluation, and that gap extends to reproduction.

Breeding

Nothing specific has been recorded on the breeding of this species. Based on the general pattern for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), the presumed mode is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — but this is a family-level inference, not an observation made on P. vignai itself. There is no record of this species being spawned in captivity, and like most Nemacheilidae it should be assumed effectively unbred in the aquarium hobby.

In the aquarium

Paracobitis vignai is not an established aquarium fish, and there is no meaningful hobby literature on keeping it — this entry exists primarily to document a threatened stream endemic, not to serve as a stocking guide. Anyone encountering this species should extend the same baseline caution used for scaleless stone loaches generally: near-scaleless skin makes the family sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, and the fish's demersal, current-loving habits point toward cool-to-warm, clear, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than a warm, still, densely planted setup.

Given how little is documented about its husbandry requirements and how restricted and pressured its wild population is, this is a species better appreciated through its conservation story than sought out for a tank.

Conservation

Paracobitis vignai has not been formally assessed by the IUCN and is listed as Not Evaluated. One published threat assessment states plainly that a proper IUCN evaluation cannot currently be made because the species' biology, range and population size are too poorly known — an honest acknowledgment of the data gap rather than an oversight.

What is documented is concerning: the Sistan basin faces severe and worsening water scarcity, driven by damming, irrigation extraction and prolonged drought across the shared Iran-Afghanistan Helmand system. As an endemic confined to this single, shrinking freshwater system, the species' fate is tied directly to the basin's water security, and habitat loss and degradation are identified as its primary threats.
