Paracobitis zabgawraensis is a small stone loach known only from the Great Zab River drainage on the Iraq–Turkey border, described as recently as 2014 in a review of the crested loaches of the genus Paracobitis. It is a member of Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that fills the cool, clear, fast-flowing headwaters of Eurasia with small, bottom-hugging micro-predators. Almost nothing beyond its original description has been published on this fish — no aquarium trade, no husbandry record, no population assessment — so honesty about what is simply unknown matters more here than in almost any other loach account.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracobitis zabgawraensis was described in 2014 by Jörg Freyhof, Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Golnaz Sayyadzadeh and Matthias Geiger in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (25(1): 11–38), in a paper reviewing the crested loaches of the genus Paracobitis from Iran and Iraq and describing four new species at once. The holotype is deposited under the catalogue number ZFMK 56827. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, whose genera have been repeatedly reshuffled as older, broad groupings such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been split apart; Paracobitis itself is one of several genera — alongside Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus, Schistura and Triplophysa — that now carry species once lumped together under those old names.

The species epithet gives away its whole distribution: zabgawraensis is built from Zab Gawra, the Kurdish name for the Great Zab River, the waterway this loach is named after and, so far, the only drainage it is confirmed to inhabit. As a narrow-range fish published in a single specialist taxonomic paper, it has no history of use in the aquarium hobby and no synonyms in circulation — the 2014 combination is the only one this species has ever had.

Morphology

Paracobitis zabgawraensis is a small loach, reaching about 3.5 in in standard length in the type material — modest even by stone-loach standards. Its ground colour is described as almost plain brown, overlaid with a narrow, yellowish reticulate (net-like) pattern rather than the bold blotching or barring seen in some related species; this restrained, mottled camouflage suits a fish that spends its life pressed against stream-bed gravel and cobble.

The feature the describing authors used to separate it from its closest relatives is where the dorsal fin sits: in P. zabgawraensis the dorsal-fin origin lies above the pelvic-fin origin, rather than behind it as in other regional Paracobitis. Like other nemacheilids it is a slender, cylindrical, near-scaleless loach built for hugging the substrate in current, and — as in the wider genus — it likely carries the small, erectile suborbital spine typical of many loaches, though this has not been specifically documented for the species. Its near-scaleless skin is a detail that matters for care more than for looks: it is the same trait that makes scaleless loaches broadly sensitive to copper and full-strength medications.

Habitat

The type locality is the Chami Rean River near Ziraran, in Erbil province, Iraqi Kurdistan (roughly 36°56.60'N, 44°11.72'E), and the confirmed range extends across the Great Zab River system in Iraqi Kurdistan and into the Habour drainage in Turkey. Both are part of the wider Tigris basin, draining the mountainous borderlands of northern Iraq and southeastern Turkey. Like other Paracobitis, it is a fish of clear, cool-to-cool-temperate, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stream water running over stony or gravel substrate — the classic stone-loach habitat of Middle Eastern and Anatolian upland streams, not the warm, still or blackwater conditions associated with many tropical Southeast Asian loaches.

No temperature or pH data have been published specifically for this species. Related Paracobitis and other regional nemacheilids typically occupy cool subtropical-to-temperate flowing water, and the type locality's setting in Kurdish highland drainages points the same way; a keeper should treat any water-chemistry figures for this species as an informed estimate from its relatives and its documented cool, fast habitat rather than as measured fact.

Feeding

No diet study exists for Paracobitis zabgawraensis specifically, but FishBase records a trophic level of about 2.7 ± 0.3 for the species, consistent with a low-level invertebrate predator rather than a grazer or generalist omnivore. This matches the pattern for Paracobitis and stone loaches generally: bottom-dwelling micro-predators that pick small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny stream-bed prey from among gravel and cobble in fast water.

In the absence of species-specific feeding data, the safest approach — and the one consistent with its genus and family — is to treat it as a micro-predator that would take small live and frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, small crustaceans) and sinking prepared foods, and that would be unlikely to rely on flake taken from the surface.

Mating

No information on courtship, spawning triggers or sexual dimorphism has been published for this species. The original description is a taxonomic review focused on distinguishing morphology between four newly described Paracobitis, not a natural-history or breeding account, and no subsequent study appears to have filled that gap.

What can be said comes from the wider genus and family: Paracobitis and other Nemacheilidae are egg-scattering loaches with no elaborate courtship or parental-care behaviour on record, spawning being triggered by seasonal changes in flow and temperature in their fast headwater streams. There is no basis to assume anything more specific for P. zabgawraensis itself.

Breeding

As with the rest of Nemacheilidae, the expected breeding mode for Paracobitis zabgawraensis is egg-scattering over gravel and among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward — the pattern documented across stone and brook loaches generally. There is no record of this species being bred, or even kept, in the aquarium; it is known only from its 2014 type description and a handful of database entries drawn from that paper.

Given how narrow its documented range is and how recent and specialist its only publication is, the honest statement is that captive breeding of this species has, as far as the record shows, never been attempted. Any husbandry or breeding account offered for it would be extrapolation from relatives, not observation.

In the aquarium

Paracobitis zabgawraensis is not established in the aquarium trade — there is no evidence it has ever been kept, offered for sale, or bred by hobbyists. It exists in the hobby literature, if at all, only as a name in stone-loach taxonomic circles. Because of that, this section is necessarily general rather than species-specific.

If a keeper were ever to encounter this fish, its genus and family point clearly toward the needs of a cool-water, high-flow stone loach: strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, a stony or fine-gravel substrate rather than a soft or planted one, and cool-to-moderate temperatures rather than a warm tropical setup. Like other near-scaleless loaches, it should be assumed sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, warranting the same caution used with better-known stone and brook loaches. At roughly 3.5 in maximum length it would not need a large tank by loach standards, but its real requirement — clean, cool, fast, oxygen-rich water replicating a Tigris-basin headwater stream — would be the harder condition to meet.

Conservation

Paracobitis zabgawraensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is correctly recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Its documented range — the Great Zab and Habour drainages spanning the Iraq–Turkey border — sits in a region where water infrastructure, damming and the general pressures on Tigris-basin headwaters are active concerns for freshwater fish, but no population data or trend has been published for this specific species to confirm or quantify any threat.

There is no evidence of this species entering the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a documented concern. Its conservation picture, honestly stated, is simply unknown: a narrow-range stream endemic described only once, with no follow-up survey work on record.
